Okay, while some people may not like this, Thagern wanted our ideas/thoughts/suggestions/constructive critism, so here's my reality check for parts of your new bank system:

Honestly, the whole player-written text tabs that pop up would take up too much space on JaGex's servers to reliably keep track of the millions(?) of RuneScape accounts. You'll have to standardize everything about the system, and if people don't like it, tough. People didn't like RS2 when it came out, and became hardcore RSC junkies; same concept.

Twelve tabs, with semi-customizable icons and tab placement, should be more than enough when you consider that, with this new system, more items will be grouped together--fletching and woodcutting, for example--so one icons will stand for more than one skillset's items. I've tried to think about how this will change when JaGex adds more skills--like they've done recently with construction and hunting--but someone with a bit more brainpower and time can have fun pouring over that part.

I have a mixed opinion about the item locking function, as it will take up an amount of server memory to perform, but it's basically a decent idea. Now, with the "Unlock All" feature and locking items that have a zero count: will those zero-count items consume bank space? If not, JaGex servers have to eat the memory to store these zero-count items. If so, then the point of locking and unlocking items comes under more careful consideration.

The ghost item concept, however, is a little difficult to manage, unless the lock and ghost functions are used in combination, from what I'm thinking, to keep one stack of an item from going to zero and disappearing from the tab a player placed it under. I'm not too sure about the concept of the multi-subtract, though. How exactly will the system determine how much to deduct from one side of a stack verses the other?

Instead of creating a completely new building/area for the "Give Away" icon to target, why not move the existing Party Room to a free-to-play location, making it available to everyone, while having the "Give Away" icon target to the Party Chest? Maybe the size of the party chest will have to be increased quite a bit to accomodate this change, and the frequency of Party Pete's cleaning out junk from the chest stepped up a bit as well. There could be a thought as to reducing the cost for pulling the ballon-drop lever so more drop parties occur, but are still held in check.

The "Bin" icon is a great idea, but, instead of having a confirmation for each item, why not have a prompt that shows--only when items are placed in the bin--before exiting your bank that shows all the items in your 'Trash Bin' and a confirmation message that they will be dropped? This would save time for players upon the update being made, because I'm sure that everyone and their mother will be cleaning house at that time.

The current system of moving items--"Moving the items will be alot easier then origional, this was posted by someone (please tell me if it was you). If the re-arrange is set to 'insert' when you start to drag an item between the slots, the item will remain on your mouse. So after you drag it to the slot you wish to put it in, you will still be able to dragit through that slot, after it has opened. If it is set to 'swap', the item will go to the bottom of that slot, without it opening."--should be thought on a little more; maybe "Swap" is only available within an opened tab, and "Insert" can go between tabs?

The "What's This?" feature is easily done away with by JaGex stating that if you don't understand the new bank features, read the flipping Knowledge Base entries for it. Sorry, I don't understand why people don't use what is already available to them...

~~~
All in all, Thagern, this is a wonderful concept, and just needs tweaking here and there. Would you mind posting your current Tab Icon pictures with what combinations you have at the moment? People can then have an understanding of your ideas with that, and be able to help with new combination ideas. (I, for one, would love to put some mindpower toward that.)
And I LOVE this idea!!!!
Thanks for your feedback, I don't know how i missed it before.
#1 Not being a programmer myself, i don't know anything about how these will be coded. So i won't be able to give any accurate knowledge on memory useage etc. But, i did change from the 'name your own bank slot' idea to the icons because i knew that would reduce memore useage. (and it looks better)
#2 The locking idea. Now, you ask if items locked with a '0' count would be consume bank space? Yes, they would, the idea behind the lock items is that instead of having to rearrange your bank every time you want to go out and train etc, your armour and weapons would be locked to the tab you placed them in. (If you need more explaniation, please ask, i know what im taking about, but i never know how to explain it properly)
#3 I had tossed up wtih that idea, It could work, but my consern is that in order for that to work ( i would imagain) the bin icon would become a slot, so people know what will be thrown out. I guess how you explain it, that any items in the bin 'slot' would be forced out upon closing the bank page would work.
#4 I think i wrote that at like 3 in the morning, so it makes no sence to me, but what you write sounds reasonable. (the insert and swap bit)
#5 The knowledge base, would defently make this idea alot easier, and would eliminate the need for the 'whats this' options, And i think once people saw their new bank, they would be running to the knowledge base to find out what everything does
Sorry i didn't get back to you sooner elven mist, I don't know how i missed your post actually
I'm baaaaaack! :P All right, Thagern, I'm on to bouncing off your response this time; let me know what you think :D :
1) Okay, honestly, I'm no programer myself :anxious:, so I'm just basically using common sense as to what the system (JaGex servers) will have to keep track of for each player.
To make life easy for JaGex and RuneScape players (and you), let's say that your whole system is standardized--which is up to your discretion--and there are up to, we'll say, twelve (12) tabs, which are set to specific skill combination icons (that still need to be worked out before a finalized version is sent to JaGex... *=P~ at the thought of helping*). The customizable portion for players could possibly be the number and arrangement of tabs used as well as the icons for said tabs. If there is any confusion as to what a tab means, hovering your mouse pointer over the tab would bring a pop-up box with the tab's name--similar to the Stat screen's exp information. ~ ~ *gives a hopeful look* Problems/issues solved?
2) With your explination, it finally clicked as to what you're talking about with the "Lock" feature; it's essentially placeholding! I didn't realize this before because :-$ I already use placeholders :), and as such, rarely deal with mixing my stuff up every single time I want to train something different. My way, with the current banking system, means having at least two of my most-used items--armor, weapons, tools, etc.--one for usage, the other as a placeholder. Your new system makes it so there is no need to spend extra time and money aquiring second (or more) sets of a given item; it makes perfect sense! :lol:
~ ~ What I would love to have a better understanding with is the "Ghost" feature. Please, help me to understand this!
3) Yes, the "Bin" function could be similar to the trash can on most email accounts (Hotmail here, so that's what I'm using as a base), but instead of it automatically emptying after a set period of time, when you go to exit your bank after moving an item to the Bin--either by clicking the window closed or trying to move your character on the map--a non-avoidable confirmation window would pop up containing all the items currently in the Bin Slot and asking you to verify before the items are dropped/given away (if linked to the proposed Charity Hall or revision talks about Party Pete's Chest). Thinking about it, though, it may be better for the Bin to act more like the Recycle Bin on Windows' desktop, and not empty until you physically tell it to empty, and it gives you a confirmation; this would probably be the better idea if there were connection issues or you had to log out quickly. ~ ~ Your feedback?
And, as far as missing my post, maybe it's because you were writing
at like 3 in the morning
and somehow missed the huge post of size 14 blue text... :roll: #-o (Edit: Due to Mod intervention, the posts are now back to the normal black.)
If that were true, then this thread would be dead, and the person's effort--sorry Thagern, I didn't want to assign a gender to you and be wrong--to bring this idea together would have been for nothing.
*sarcastically* ...But then, :roll: what do I know?
Elven_Myst.png
It's been a while since I posted here. I still much preferred the Text Tabs, but it looks like there's been a small update since last time...
Honestly, the whole player-written text tabs that pop up would take up too much space on JaGex's servers to reliably keep track of the millions(?) of RuneScape accounts. People didn't like RS2 when it came out, and became hardcore RSC junkies; same concept.
I don't know much about Java programming, but I don't think the strain would be very much more at all. Think about it. Jagex has to remember what image you've chosen for each slot, which means that a variable will have to be stored. In the same sense, each text tab will have to be stored. I think giving everyone twelve text-based tabs would be VERY much like giving everyone an additional twelve friends for their friends list. Too much space on the server? I don't really think so.
My main issue comes down to their functionality. Even if you set them yourself, it's tough to remember what some of those images are, and even worse, find them. My problem with the bank currently is that I can be looking right at something and not see it. If the tabs are pictures too, I worry that I will spend twice as long looking for which one I want.
It seems there are people who like text, and those who want pictures. Maybe, just maybe, it's possible to do both? Think about it. If there were an option to change it back and forth, then everyone would be pleased, and less server space would be taken, if it is actually an issue.
#1 So, your suggesting having 12 tabs with preset icons on what can be stored in them? I didn't really want to do that as it limits players, and in a way forces them to store that type of item in that slot. I want players to be free to customise the tabs themselves, bescause there are lots of different types of players, myself, i am a skiller, so i won't need an armour slot etc. I think that is what you are saying, correct me if im wrong.
#2 PLACEHOLDER that is what i needed to say all along. Yes, it is a placeholder. I do the same as you, store 2 items to hold that item in place, but some items players can sometimes only afford on of, (dragon/rare). The ghost item, some items (feathers etc) can be used in 2 slots fletching/fishing, the ghost item makes a replicar of that item, lets say you have 20,000 feathers, if you ghost the item, another 20,000 feathers appear, which can be moves between slots. Now, when lets say 1,000 feathers are removed from one stack, 1,000 will be removed from the other. Proberly not the best since feathers are the only thing i can think of that would require it : oops : .
#3 After thinking of it, i guess the bin could become another 'slot' but any items in there would count to the total in the bank, then the bin could be emptied when a player wanted, i like that idea.
I think we are making progress
Changing the text to pictures was a very controversial change indeed. The only reason i chose the picture tabs was because i found i could put all 12 next to eachother, and have more space, instead of having a second line of tabs taking up more space, i did plan to make tabs be done in text and pictures. But mike most things, im sure if you keep to the same pictures you will get use to them. Not saying i won't change them when i get back to editing. (havent had much time lately)
This is a good idea! But also this would require more bankspace for players, which we all want, but i dont think we will get...
an amazingly well planned idea, and the pictures are just beatifull, i can already imagine an end to the endless bank searching now :thumbsup: I support, and you should definately send this idea to jagex
Okay, while some people may not like this, Thagern wanted our ideas/thoughts/suggestions/constructive critism, so here's my reality check for parts of your new bank system:
Honestly, the whole player-written text tabs that pop up would take up too much space on JaGex's servers to reliably keep track of the millions(?) of RuneScape accounts. You'll have to standardize everything about the system, and if people don't like it, tough. People didn't like RS2 when it came out, and became hardcore RSC junkies; same concept.
Twelve tabs, with semi-customizable icons and tab placement, should be more than enough when you consider that, with this new system, more items will be grouped together--fletching and woodcutting, for example--so one icons will stand for more than one skillset's items. I've tried to think about how this will change when JaGex adds more skills--like they've done recently with construction and hunting--but someone with a bit more brainpower and time can have fun pouring over that part.
I have a mixed opinion about the item locking function, as it will take up an amount of server memory to perform, but it's basically a decent idea. Now, with the "Unlock All" feature and locking items that have a zero count: will those zero-count items consume bank space? If not, JaGex servers have to eat the memory to store these zero-count items. If so, then the point of locking and unlocking items comes under more careful consideration.
The ghost item concept, however, is a little difficult to manage, unless the lock and ghost functions are used in combination, from what I'm thinking, to keep one stack of an item from going to zero and disappearing from the tab a player placed it under. I'm not too sure about the concept of the multi-subtract, though. How exactly will the system determine how much to deduct from one side of a stack verses the other?
Instead of creating a completely new building/area for the "Give Away" icon to target, why not move the existing Party Room to a free-to-play location, making it available to everyone, while having the "Give Away" icon target to the Party Chest? Maybe the size of the party chest will have to be increased quite a bit to accomodate this change, and the frequency of Party Pete's cleaning out junk from the chest stepped up a bit as well. There could be a thought as to reducing the cost for pulling the ballon-drop lever so more drop parties occur, but are still held in check.
The "Bin" icon is a great idea, but, instead of having a confirmation for each item, why not have a prompt that shows--only when items are placed in the bin--before exiting your bank that shows all the items in your 'Trash Bin' and a confirmation message that they will be dropped? This would save time for players upon the update being made, because I'm sure that everyone and their mother will be cleaning house at that time.
The current system of moving items--"Moving the items will be alot easier then origional, this was posted by someone (please tell me if it was you). If the re-arrange is set to 'insert' when you start to drag an item between the slots, the item will remain on your mouse. So after you drag it to the slot you wish to put it in, you will still be able to dragit through that slot, after it has opened. If it is set to 'swap', the item will go to the bottom of that slot, without it opening."--should be thought on a little more; maybe "Swap" is only available within an opened tab, and "Insert" can go between tabs?
The "What's This?" feature is easily done away with by JaGex stating that if you don't understand the new bank features, read the flipping Knowledge Base entries for it. Sorry, I don't understand why people don't use what is already available to them...
~~~

All in all, Thagern, this is a wonderful concept, and just needs tweaking here and there. Would you mind posting your current Tab Icon pictures with what combinations you have at the moment? People can then have an understanding of your ideas with that, and be able to help with new combination ideas. (I, for one, would love to put some mindpower toward that.)

And I LOVE this idea!!!!

Thanks for your feedback, I don't know how i missed it before.

#1 Not being a programmer myself, i don't know anything about how these will be coded. So i won't be able to give any accurate knowledge on memory useage etc. But, i did change from the 'name your own bank slot' idea to the icons because i knew that would reduce memore useage. (and it looks better)

#2 The locking idea. Now, you ask if items locked with a '0' count would be consume bank space? Yes, they would, the idea behind the lock items is that instead of having to rearrange your bank every time you want to go out and train etc, your armour and weapons would be locked to the tab you placed them in. (If you need more explaniation, please ask, i know what im taking about, but i never know how to explain it properly)

#3 I had tossed up wtih that idea, It could work, but my consern is that in order for that to work ( i would imagain) the bin icon would become a slot, so people know what will be thrown out. I guess how you explain it, that any items in the bin 'slot' would be forced out upon closing the bank page would work.

#4 I think i wrote that at like 3 in the morning, so it makes no sence to me, but what you write sounds reasonable. (the insert and swap bit)

#5 The knowledge base, would defently make this idea alot easier, and would eliminate the need for the 'whats this' options, And i think once people saw their new bank, they would be running to the knowledge base to find out what everything does

Sorry i didn't get back to you sooner elven mist, I don't know how i missed your post actually

I'm baaaaaack! :P All right, Thagern, I'm on to bouncing off your response this time; let me know what you think :D :

1) Okay, honestly, I'm no programer myself :anxious:, so I'm just basically using common sense as to what the system (JaGex servers) will have to keep track of for each player.

To make life easy for JaGex and RuneScape players (and you), let's say that your whole system is standardized--which is up to your discretion--and there are up to, we'll say, twelve (12) tabs, which are set to specific skill combination icons (that still need to be worked out before a finalized version is sent to JaGex... *=P~ at the thought of helping*). The customizable portion for players could possibly be the number and arrangement of tabs used as well as the icons for said tabs. If there is any confusion as to what a tab means, hovering your mouse pointer over the tab would bring a pop-up box with the tab's name--similar to the Stat screen's exp information. ~ ~ *gives a hopeful look* Problems/issues solved?

2) With your explination, it finally clicked as to what you're talking about with the "Lock" feature; it's essentially placeholding! I didn't realize this before because :-$ I already use placeholders :), and as such, rarely deal with mixing my stuff up every single time I want to train something different. My way, with the current banking system, means having at least two of my most-used items--armor, weapons, tools, etc.--one for usage, the other as a placeholder. Your new system makes it so there is no need to spend extra time and money aquiring second (or more) sets of a given item; it makes perfect sense! :lol:

~ ~ What I would love to have a better understanding with is the "Ghost" feature. Please, help me to understand this!

3) Yes, the "Bin" function could be similar to the trash can on most email accounts (Hotmail here, so that's what I'm using as a base), but instead of it automatically emptying after a set period of time, when you go to exit your bank after moving an item to the Bin--either by clicking the window closed or trying to move your character on the map--a non-avoidable confirmation window would pop up containing all the items currently in the Bin Slot and asking you to verify before the items are dropped/given away (if linked to the proposed Charity Hall or revision talks about Party Pete's Chest). Thinking about it, though, it may be better for the Bin to act more like the Recycle Bin on Windows' desktop, and not empty until you physically tell it to empty, and it gives you a confirmation; this would probably be the better idea if there were connection issues or you had to log out quickly. ~ ~ Your feedback?

And, as far as missing my post, maybe it's because you were writing

at like 3 in the morning
and somehow missed the huge post of size 14 blue text... :roll: #-o

~~~~~
ENJOY!! ::'
Did anyone else know that there's a 10 smiley limit to a post? I didn't before I tried posting this one the first time. LOL...
#1 So, your suggesting having 12 tabs with preset icons on what can be stored in them? I didn't really want to do that as it limits players, and in a way forces them to store that type of item in that slot. I want players to be free to customise the tabs themselves, bescause there are lots of different types of players, myself, i am a skiller, so i won't need an armour slot etc. I think that is what you are saying, correct me if im wrong.
#2 PLACEHOLDER that is what i needed to say all along. Yes, it is a placeholder. I do the same as you, store 2 items to hold that item in place, but some items players can sometimes only afford on of, (dragon/rare). The ghost item, some items (feathers etc) can be used in 2 slots fletching/fishing, the ghost item makes a replicar of that item, lets say you have 20,000 feathers, if you ghost the item, another 20,000 feathers appear, which can be moves between slots. Now, when lets say 1,000 feathers are removed from one stack, 1,000 will be removed from the other. Proberly not the best since feathers are the only thing i can think of that would require it : oops : .
#3 After thinking of it, i guess the bin could become another 'slot' but any items in there would count to the total in the bank, then the bin could be emptied when a player wanted, i like that idea.
I think we are making progress
-Hehe, my backfround is blue, so it didn't stand out as much on my screen as it would yours : lol :
--No, i didn't know there was a max of 10 smiles per post, i have never used that many. : P ( tried to post, i had 16... grr, this could take awhile to find 6 to delete)( tried again, still have 1 to remove)
---I am male, for future reference : D
As a side note, I haven't looked at this thread in ages so new suggestions are a refresher.
1) While I agree with what you are saying Thagern, I see the merit of having pre-set tabs. True skillers/pures wouldn't use all the tabs, but not using tabs isn't taking up bank space, so why does it matter if there's another tab to put things in? This should probably be discussed a bit more, because both sides have good points.
2) There are plenty of other things. You could stick fish into cooking and fishing, as well as combat. Pots would also fit. Tools like tinderboxes, knives, etc. could also fit into multiple categories. P.S. I think there should be a "Basic Tools" tab for stuff like spades, tinderboxes, and coins.
3) The question is would the Bin area be a 13th tab? Or would the stuff inside return to their original tabs? Or get dropped?
4) As a point I wanted to bring up, the Charity Hall needs to be worked. It would solve the begger problem though
P.P.S. Elven Mist took all the smilies =(
Project Onyx Staff Writer. Stories, articles, and opinions, oh my!
Hi, I've not looked at this suggestion for a long time, but i like very much how it has been addapted.
My only current consern is the text buttons at the base (lock, swap etc) As im sure you have heard Jagex are currently translating the entire game into german, to increate their target audience. Unfortunally in German words are much longer than in english. This is why jagex changed the interfaces, and are slowly replacing more and more text, with pictures, and tool pits (popup streachable boxes like seen on the prayer menu)
Currently you are using text, however it would be better if you could addapt the buttons so that they have icons rather than words, not only would this save jagex more thinking if they implament this, but it would allow people of much more nationalities to read it. \'
Edit: have you considered switching round the default options for bank organisation.
Currently they are set so "swap" is default, I belive this is because "insert" was not added to a later date. However, as far as I am aware most people prefer to use insert, rather than switch.
Maybe you could change this?
sig2webzx7.jpg
This is, simply put, a very, very, VERY awesome idea. I love it.
As for the poster before me, I'm pretty sure that Jagex could easily swap most of the text in his pictures. Lock/Unlock is just a combination lock, in the locked position, and the unlocked position. Unlock all could be three or four Unlocked locks, and Ghost could be a transparent item over a regular item. Swap could be two items, with something like that recycle symbol thingy (Yeah, real specific, hm?), and insert could be two items with an arrow coming down between them.
Supported!
Freakin Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
