WORK OUT BUDDIES

Hey. I'm making another topic simply because I didn't think it applied to my earlier one. However, if a mod feels necessary I'll join the two together.

Where do most people tend to find gym partners? (If you use them) most guys won't do it w/ me, and most girls hate going to the gym. I need in a sense a accountability partner to work out with me, but no one in my family save my mom gives a [cabbage] about their health. (My mom's a wellness coach, I'm surprised she's even fat,(mildly fat that is) she never eats junk food, or soda. She does do a lot of alcohol though. ) and if I get a gym membership, going by myself will bore me to tears. So I'll never go. SO where do you tend to find them? I'm skinnier than all my friends, so none of them wanna go to the gym, and I'm guessing you guys don't just talk to random people? Work isn't an option either, as there are two other men in my workplace of 80 people, one is 72, one is 49 and morbidly obese...

So yh, do you just have friends from school? Or on the flip side do you do it by yourself?

I actually go with friends. However, if you can't get a friend, possibly go to the gym and find someone else (preferably around your fitness level) that is alone and spark up a conversation and lead into workout buddies.

It has to be your friends. Close friends, like the people you go out with the night before. If you're all hungover the next morning, everybody's on the same level when you all go to the gym. I have many friends that go to the same gym as me but I only go with a few, the others have different schedules (when I say differing schedules, I mean they're hungover at different times than me) and only go once a week.

If your friends really don't want to work out then drop subtle hints that will make them insecure about their body. It's not too hard

I had two friends I used to go the same gym as, they were both close friends and we'd go cool off in the jacuzzi afterwards and have a chat which was fun. But when I started I went on my own, and now that I'm at uni I prefer going on my own. Don't rely on someone to motivate you, I know it helps, but if you can't find someone up to the job just accept that you'll have to go solo. Someone might come along eventually or when you've been going a bit more. It's not essential, and if your motivation is tied to your partner and they slack off then you might slack off.

Do you deem it necessary? I avoid going with friends, if anything I think it would demotivate me, but that's me. I'd rather go when I want to and get stuck in without distractions.

But if you do feel it necessary to go with someone, the suggestions posted above are about as good as they can get.

I go with my flatmats, friends, or memebers of my rugby/cricket team, or alone. If your friends won't tag along, don't force them to. If their fitness level is well below yours, then they're really only going to hold you back.

Why do you capitalize GYM? >_<

I don't go to the gym but I go running on my own unless it's the morning then I go with my mom. I end up leaving her behind (we run laps so it's cool) because we aren't the same fitness level.

i go by myself. if i had a partner i would prolly go to the gym a LOT less because it's impossible to find someone with the exact same sched.

if you need someone to "spot" you, just ask someone close. most don't mind spotting if it's only for a couple of sets

It depends on what you want the buddy there for.

If I want someone to spot me, I ask someone whos in the area of the free weights. Some rules for this: never ask anyone for anything when they have weights in their hands. Never ask anyone for anything within 30 seconds of when you think they are going to start their set. Never ask anyone to spot you for more than 3 sets on a single exercise. And never ask for a spotter without being willing to return the favor.

If I want a partner, as in someone to go with, work with, train along side with, then I use craigslist. I find it very hard to go to the gym with people I know. I have a very strict mental focus in the gym. Every time when I have gone with friends, they end up talking about random stuff in between sets...I go to the gym to work, work hard, and work even harder. Its hard to focus on benching when you got someone gossiping in your ear about their cousin's friend's grandma.

I really reccomend the craigslist approach. I have a few people in my phone who I know absolutely nothing about except for how much they squat, bench, etc.

My opinion.

Just bring your iPod and work out. I find that working out with a friend, or having a "workout buddy", only slows me down. All that time spent talking about your "maxes", "what exercise is better for x", standing around watching each other lift, ect ect.. is much better used simply... exercising... All that chatting up and standing around builds up to 20-30 minutes of a 1 hour work out... you can do a lot in 20-30 mins.

yea no, I know. I made this thread a [bleep] long time ago. But I just like an accountability partner, I work better with face to face competition.

Think of someone you hate. Think of someone you'd hate to be you. Then when you're lifting, imagine them right beside you, doing better than you are. It's what I do with everything. It's competition without having to worry about grudges against someone just because they can lift more than you. Can also end up being kind of hilarious, as the person I imagine is always dressed in full hockey gear.

There's no such thing as regret. A regret means you are unhappy with the person you are now,

and if you're unhappy with the person you are, you change yourself. That

regret will no longer be a regret, because it will help to form the new,

better you. So really, a regret isn't a regret.

It's experience.

I work out with a friend from my football team. Our workout schedules are literally identical, so it works out, and he's a lot bigger than I am, which leads to me working harder to keep up. I mean I can't catch up because he's a lineman and I'm a DB, but it still gets me to workout harder.

I workout with my hockey buddies and close friends, depending on whomever is free.

Go join a sports team and it's almost guaranteed that you'll find a workout buddy.
