I followed one girl around, who's my friend. We danced together, but not with each other. She's the one who's going to be hitting me over the head with padded PVC pipe over the summer. I generally avoided the girl I'm accused of liking, as well as those who accuse me of liking her.

They can be used in offensive situations, but they're generally much harder to use and any slip up could cost you a lot (for example, if some enemy infantry pass through your infantry wall and start beating up your crossbowmen.

Crossbow men can wield shields and wear heavy armour as opposed to archers, and they could have dirks, daggers or shorstwords in case of melee combat.

At my school (where I just finished my last year) there are:

 

A large group of people who are my friends.

 

A mid sized group I considder good friends.

 

And most of the girls in the ninth grade (at least used to) adore me.

6,000,000 is put into schools teaching tactics, history, arithmetic, and freeform physical combat techniques. Combat classes are often held in varied out-of-class environments, the goal being to stay within a certain area and manipulate the environment to achieve victory over the other students (through capturing or knocking them out, wooden weapons are provided) for yourself or your squad. Ingenuity and stealth is rewarded, charging into battle without strategy leads to mandatory extra tactics and combat classes. All are taught basic reading and legible writing, as well as optional after-hours music courses. This schooling is provided until the age of fifteen, and those sharing a school are treated as kin until graduation. The top 5% students at a school are trained further under the instruction of former top students and elite military personnel at the Reykjavik Military Academy, where they are chosen to follow specific military roles based on their talents.

The Orrustagud of Orloglom greets Orrustagud Mather of Zeirids. He agrees to the alliance and trade, and sends 2000 advanced-level students and a designated general on a "field trip" to Muslim-controlled Spain. The students are to be separated into 200 10-man units, which will be divided as necessary to watch for the advance of Catholic forces. Special focus is placed on the location of Catholic leaders, and accepted casualties associated with the death of mid-rank officers and priests is 5 men each. They are not to engage in direct combat unless strictly necessary, but will instead "collect" funds from Catholics, willingly or not, and from willing allies as well. This money will be used to purchase concealable weaponry and poisons of varying natures. Regular soldiers are not to be engaged except when a 10/1 or higher enemy/student casualty rate is guaranteed and no valuable poisons are used. Mather is kinbound to the Orrustagud, so his forces are not to be attacked, and temperance is "recommended" in case of Muslim conflicts with students.

 

THIS IS SOMETHING YOU SHOULD READ, RETECH. Just making sure you notice.

Also, the students are recommended to observe a "one hit, one kill" policy. Small, light crossbows are the weapons of choice within their effective ranges.

Anywho, the only reason that most of you got bad results was probaly because you underestimated a country, compared to the city states. Just to clarify, Bruges and Antwerp were weak city states, and had smaller militias. These other countries are full fledged armies, and can have budgets up to your budget, though most are smaller. England has a budget of approximately 10 million, Denmark is around 6 million, and Hungary is probaly 7-8 million.
