Keep in mind the design constraints are basically one wall, two walls, three walls for castle, fortress, and citadel. They all have a strong keep. The French archers opened the battle with devestating volleys of arrows, killing several peasants fishing along the shore line. The catapults demolished their hovels, and the balistas burned down their clothes lines. The French army landed without much opposition and marched up to the fortress, which had two rings of concentric walls. By then the defence had been alerted, and their forces were prepared. First the trebuchets began pounding on the first wall, though the fortress has trebuchets set up within its rings which fired back at the French trebuchets, destroying all of them. However, the first wall had been breached, and the bloodthirsty general ordered the peasants in. They met a force of two thousand spearmen, and two thousand pikemen. The peasants were easily slaughtered, though the French general had finally figured out how large the enemy army was and what it was composed of. In accordance to the plan, the general ordered his archers and siege equipment to fire at them, while his swordsmen charged in to face them. However, most of the arrows were ineffective because most of the wall was still there. The swordsmen were decimated by the variety of defences that the enemy had, including flaming logs and boiling pitch. Soon they had been killed as well. The French General decided against continuing the attack, and instead made camp outside the fortress while waiting for further instructions.
