Is it worth getting the Wii?

Graphics ARE an important factor whether you like it or not, Gallade. It's just something Wii owners have to deal with.

 

I have to agree and disagree here.

 

Graphics are, in fact, important. If they weren't, we would never have passed the moderate 8-bit era to the God-like 16 bit era, but many people tend to mistake "Good Graphics" for "Realism is the [cabbage]". This is why there was that much controversy on Gametrailers best of E3 grafics, which was won by Kirby (I still say Limbo should have won).

 

I myself prefer alternate grafical styles, like Cell shading, 16-bit sprites and hand drawn animation, which are kinda scarce in HD consoles (apart from certain XBLA and PSN titles, mostly indie), but i also enjoy some earth tone realism from time to time.

 

My opinion of the Wii's grafics are both of saving production costs and a tec challenge, ie, make the best artistic grafics you can (which glady were seen quite a bit this year's E3). The HD consoles CAN do it better, they just don't seem to try it.

This is pretty much my answer, if you love FPS or shooters, stay away from it, otherwise, there is always a lot of enjoyment to be had in the wii :thumbup:

I don't understand what you're saying here. We basically said that the Wii sucks for FPS games, and that you should get a 360 or PS3 if you like FPS games, because it really does.

 

I think you misunderstood. Wii sucks for FPS games, but there are some really, really good games on the system. Of course, you seem far too biased against anything Nintendo to accept that the Wii can, in fact, have good games.

 

The 360 and PS3 do not automatically outclass everything the Wii has to offer. All three consoles have advantages and disadvantages, and there is no definitive best or worst console.

I just don't see the amazing games for the Wii. Of course we can argue it until we're blue in the face and no ones opinion is going to change. Not everyone likes those games you mentioned Gallade. I never found NMH interesting, TvC I don't care about because there are other fighting games I'd rather play (and I'd rather not play a fighting game with a crippled online system) and Monster Hunter Tri just seems... meh. (cue the floodgates)

 

It's a pretty universal fact that a lot of Wii games do look pretty bad (especially on a good TV) and their controls (IMO) are less than ideal. Honestly if you find the concept of motion control cool I would just wait for Sony's Move to come out.

Limbo should have won. Honestly I didn't think the Kirby game, visually, looked that great. I guess I just don't like the whole yarn gimmick they're doing.

Not gonna comment on your taste for games because each one is unique to each person, so there isn't any plausible argument for that.

 

On the Kirby vs Limbo argument, yeah, Limbo should have won, but that isn't to degrade Kirby, it manages to look nothing short of outstanding, artisticly or not. Limbo stood out for me because of the ambient mostly. :P

 

(PS: I really liked that kirby thingy of sowing the background and such, quite original if you ask me)

 

Also, on the Move subject, even though we still have to get hands on ourselves, i heard that when comparing it to a Motion plus'ed Wiimote, motion plus stands out since it incorporates some kind of gizmo (gyroscope i think?) that detects both faster and more accuratly than Move- Eye set. We have to wait and see for that. I'd still like to see Sony try something new rather than jumping on bandwagons, at least Natal (i am NOT calling that thing kinect) was trying something diferent, disregarding the outcome.

I can't understand the fuss between a game console vs. game console. They have their ups and downs. I played all 3 consoles with the best

selling games and I equally enjoyed all of them. If you want the typical platformers like mario and other interactive games, go for the

wii. Anything aside from that should be the other 2 consoles.

ahaha I agree. Brawl did a really terrible job in my book compared to Melee, but Gamecube was too much like Nintendo 64. and what I mean by that is that there were no extra features like backwards compatibility, or the requirement to have the memory card to save games. Wii completely nailed all of that.

Consoles aren't equel, the games set them apart, and just like a local guy said every of today's console fill their own niche: RPG's get a PS3, FPS' get a 360, platformers get a Wii , generalising all of them, since they all have pretty much every genre available.

 

Saying that the Wii is worse than 360/PS3 right from start without a solid base of arguments *does* make you a fanboy.

If you like the Nintendo games that much then its going to be the best choice for you, really this console war [cabbage] just depends on your situation, if all your friends have a PS3 get a PS3 and vice versa for 360. Given all its negatives the Wii is not going to be the best choice for the majority of gamers, its clearly marketed at hardcore Nintendo fans and children, and I imagine (and would hope) most of us here fit into neither category.

Here's the thing:

-if you enjoy Nintendo's main offerings like Zelda, Mario, Metroid, etc. then this is the perfect console for you.

-If you like playing games with friends that are a bit more simple and even your friends who don't play games can get into it, then the Wii is for you.

-If you find yourself wishing to play classic Nintendo games, then the Wii is for you thanks to their downloadable classics.

-If you are a fan of hardcore, rated M, bloodbath kind of games, don't buy a Wii.

-If you are looking for a hardcore experience in general that doesn't involve a Nintendo franchise everyone knows, don't buy a Wii.

-If you are looking for a good online experience, don't go Wii.

-If you like puzzle games, the Wii has quite a selection of decent ones.

 

The Wii is something I don't like because I play online with my friends, not together at a party or something, and I haven't enjoyed the core Nintendo franchises since the N64, other than Metroid.

The problem here is that Nintendo has been thrown around here and there since the N64 era.

 

I forgot to mention, the first month that Brawl came out I was playing it at Gamestop. And, it was lacking. There is no momentum, the characters move just slowly as they did in the original, and furthermore, it's all about the style and the looks.

 

I bought a Gamecube solely for Melee and I spent hundreds of hours playing that game. It stood out and for good reason: It was competitive. I wish I could say that Brawl was a competitive game, but all it is is a casual slugfest fit for those kids who have never played a past Smash Bros title.

 

The thing with Nintendo is that they refuse to give up a legacy that has gone with them for over 30 years. I'm glad to have been around to see much of it happen, and it's difficult for me to let a childhood memory burn up in ashes. I don't have any console from this generation, primilarily because I really think that today's games are taking ones from the past and regurgitating them into a new format. A sleek cover with the same boring gameplay.

 

Shelling out $300 for something that I might be able to play for a month or two is NOT worth it. Nintendo has always appealed to kids and being well past that age group I wonder if it's really paying that much more for titles that feel too much like the ones I grew up with.

I don't enjoy it. mainly because when i play games, i play them to relax and sit on my [wagon]. moving my arms and s**t makes me feel like an idiot and the graphics on most games are just plain bad. i got it mainly because of ssbb for some reason didn't feel at all like melee. i enjoyed mario cart, mysims, wiiski and wii play. nintendo just doesnt do much with 3rd party developers so its hard to get those amazingly unique titles. plus the online play is a nightmare. i currently have mine unplugged in a glass cabinet because it looks kinda cool. i'll probably end up putting some homebrew stuff on it.. eventually.
