Is it worth getting the Wii?

For the past few years I've speculated in getting a Nintendo Wii, but never really tried because I felt that I would be disappointed...

Ever since Sony came into play with the Sony Playstation, Nintendo has been on the short end of the stick for all the wrong reasons. It is not cool enough. It is not geared for older players. It focuses too much on certain themes (Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Kirby, etc).

Sadly many of today's gamers fail to realize that Nintendo has been in the business for over 30 years. I'm proud to say that I have been hooked on Nintendo for about 20 years now. It is doing well in places such as Japan, but in the United States, it seems to play second fiddle to the PS3 and Xbox 360. Let's admit it, both the PS3 and Xbox 360 look slick, cool, and fit for those hardcore gamers who desire to see lots of action and violence in the game content. But both Sony and Microsoft fail to support a lovable mascot, or a merchandising chain of characters that can only be found with that label.

I've stuck with Mario for a long time now and I'm coming to the point to buy a Wii or just wait it out. I know there are several older gamers out there in their late 20s and 30s who have stuck with Mario from the beginning, and as such, I feel that I'm missing out. Since SEGA and Sonic the Hedgehog joined forces with Nintendo, that just makes me want a Wii that much more. Both mascots were a big influence in my childhood and even in my mid 20s I still enjoy playing their older games.

I don't however, really support their fitness games. While I enjoy Nintendo's efforts to try to be a little different, I think going with the whole fitness program was a big mistake. Obesity has been a huge problem in the past couple decades and playing video games all day certainly has one becoming lazy and out of shape. There are more than enough fitness programs out there for the average child/adult to follow through and be a strong, healthy person.

Other than that, I really don't mind shelling $300 for a Nintendo Wii and a couple games because $300 is hardly any money. I've heard that Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Mario Galaxy 2 were good, and was wondering if those would be good to try.

If you enjoyed other Nintendo consoles then I'm sure you'll enjoy the Wii. There are a lot of great games for the Wii, as long as you fit in the niche the Wii develops for. Super Mario Galaxy 2 is brilliant; if you enjoyed Super Mario 64 then you'd love it, I promise. Metroid Prime 3 is another good one. Brawl is a hell of a lot of fun with friends, and so is Mario Kart.

Personally, I think it's definitely worth it to get one. It's the only console I've ever owned, and since I don't enjoy many FPS games, I have no problems with the game selection (It's great).

The FPS genre in general is saturated. There really hasn't been anything new since Half-Life and Halo, thus I feel that the genre is well past it's prime.

I have one too and rarely use it, but that's not to say it's a bad console. I'm just not a fan of the controls or the games. But you would probably like it since you liked past Nintendo games.

I own a wii myself and enjoy it when I'm on it. And there are times when I'm really glad that I got it. Even though I have a PS2 and an Xbox 360, i still play my wii sometimes. I own Super Smash Bros Brawl, Mario Kart, and Rockband 2 and I find them all fun, along with tons of gamecube games. So if you ask me I think it's a good console, it provides hours of fun and I'm glad i have it. I hope this has helped.

I just think the problem is that some people find that the Wii has too many titles geared to little children. Throw away titles that can be found at a bargain bin. Then again, the PS2 had too many bad games to name, but had the biggest collection by far.

I would think twice before bashing Nintendo because they laid the ground work for what IS the gaming world today. I believe that the Wii is a more laid back approach as opposed to the audience the PS3 and Xbox 360 draw in. The first mistake is judging a game by it's graphics and cover work, because that is not the entire game. I've played countless games over the years where the graphics were flat out ugly, but the gameplay was on an entirely different scale.

I grew up with a Nintendo NES/Super NES and Sega Genesis system, which is probably a little too old for most of you here. I hope that these Wii games will live up to my expectations, hoping that I don't throw away $300 for it.

The move has been released? Isn't it a little too soon to give off that opinion...?

Anyways, its really based on your style of games, RPG, Wagglan, FPS...

If your into Wagglan stuff, then yeah go with the Wii, if not, then get a PS3 of Xbox.

If you avoid the shovelware games and get titles like New Super mario bros wii, SMG,SMG2,Mario kart Wii,SSBB Zelda :Twilight princess,it is indeed a very good console

you'll get used to the "Motion" controls in no-time :P

i like the Wii more then any onther system currently on tthe market, i dont like games where the violence and blood and gore is over the top and beyond, i just want to play a fun game, which isnt generic FPS #12435678

my 2 cents

If you like past Nintendo games, the Wii is paradise for you, not only it has the natural sleuth of nintendo franchises, it has backwards compatibility with the NGC and Vistual Console which, for gamers like me who never had a NES and dont have mane SNES and N64 games, is a God's gift. Not only that, but at E3 they announced many returning franchises like DK country and Kirby to the wii.

And as much as people like to mock lack of 3rd parties and all of that, you can find very good, some brilliant, 3rd partyies, like NHM 1& 2, Red Steel 2 (DO NOT buy the first one), Muramasa, Little King Story and so on.

If it's anything it doesn't have, it's FPS's, so it isn't big of a deal if you don't like them like me. Also, getting Classic controller might be kinda necessary...

There are also rumours of a price drop soon, so I'd wait for TGS before making your move, might save you 50 bucks.

Apart from Monster Hunter Tri's, the Wii online is a joke, there is no way around it.

Yeah definitely get it. It's no good online, but has tons of Nintendo fanboyism going for it. If you don't like the controls, you can always go with GameCube games and its controller.

We've got one, with every GH title made for it, Animal Crossing, Mario Kart, and Wii Fit...

The online play isn't great, although it has an Opera browser you can get free. Haven't used it much.

If you have a DS already it's cool because you can download some demos of upcoming (mainly Nintendo) games, and interact with some Wii titles with it.

Haha.

I wouldn't bother with one. I own one and pretty much never play it.

That's pretty much my answer.

It sits and collects dust. I did play Wii Sports with my grandparents though at our Fourth of July party.

Yeah, the Wii gets a bad image from all the shovelware (And yes, most of it is crap) that you have to dig through. However, if you get through that, you get to the likes of Super Mario Galaxy, Monster Hunter Tri, No More Heroes, Red Steel 2, Muramasa, Mario Kart and a fair few others.

I'd say it's very worth it unless you really love FPS games, in which case, don't buy the Wii.

Nintendo has never been on the short end of the stick. The Wii has something like 55% of the market for consoles right now.

Gamecube

Plus they only have so much of the market because little kids or families buy it too. For what it's worth however it is at the short end of the stick.

no, waste of money. got one as a gift and i wont even let my friend mod it because the games and controls suck so much. it's for little kids.

The controls suck? I played Twilight Princess without any trouble at all. No More Heroes was a cakewalk with its controls. I beat Metroid Prime 3 in a breeze. Monster Hunter Tri is a man's game and its online capabilities are none like I've ever seen before. Obviously you've been playing the very early games that came out. And if you won't let your friend mod the Wii with Homebrew then you're a monster.

No unless you really like Nintendo games, because its got bad graphics, bad online connectivity, gimmicky controls, and 3rd parties don't give a [cabbage] about it.

1. Graphics don't mean a thing. Even games with good graphics have crappy gameplay.

2. The only two games that I know of that have seamless online connectivity are Mario Kart Wii and Monster Hunter Tri.

3. Oddly enough those gimmicky controls went good with Twilight Princess and Metroid Prime 3.

4. If you haven't noticed games like Tatsunoko vs Capcom, No More Heroes, and Monster Hunter Tri then what kind of hole have you been living in?

just because you spent enough time to master the controls doesn't make it good. controls suck, there's no way you can argue on that. nintendo exaggerated the controls more than it is capable of

and none of the games you listed sound interesting. then again you did name your account after a pokemon

lols so basically if i want to play FPS on a console with [cabbage] controls and horrible online connection, i'll play on the wii. why bother when PS3 and 360 does both better + more rofl

Interest in games vary according to the person rather than being universaly stable. You like Gears? Good, i couldn't care less.

And if you played even a second of NMH or Metroid Prime 3, you knew motions don't suck for everything.

And the my quote was saying that shooters and FPS in general aren't good on the wii, how about you read better next time before jumping on the flame wagon

I have a feeling the people bashing the controls really haven't played much past Wii Sports or some of the earlier games. I've played plenty of Wii games where the controls were very intuitive, and a lot of games don't even rely on the motion control anyways.

Graphics ARE an important factor whether you like it or not, Gallade. It's just something Wii owners have to deal with.

Fact is that the Wii definitely has some decent games and you're going to get all sorts of different replies from different console fanboys (e.g. lol piece of [cabbage] wastin ur time, or OMFG BEST THING EVAR GET NOW). My suggestion is to go to a Gamestop or a friends' house and try it out. Though since you liked Nintendo from the beginning you'll probably end up liking it anyways.
