Is Runescape (free worlds) really that popular as it appears?

Featured Replies

I played F2P for a good 4 or 5 years. The ONLY thing that kept me in it was the PKing. Castle, hills, edge, varrock were awesome in f2p. I got members several months after Dec 2007, and I can say now that P2P is ALOT better than F2P.

@OTM, i think it's just this forum that's giving you those thoughts. I don't know when it started, but it sure is getting more widespread nowadays.

I have to say, gotta love f2p! (That is until I get members again, though.)

You know if I hated f2p I wouldn't even be here right now. I'm actually unable to play as a member, which is why I'm sticking as a free player for now.

Or Trade Me pretty much has my thoughts summed up.

I wish Runescape were ENTIRELY free... then everyone would be able to play the same game, and no more f2p/p2p disputes.

I laughed out loud when I saw Guild Wars. I admit I played it before and it was terrible.

That game lasted like what...1 and a half months before I got bored of everything? P'fft....

Pure F2Per, of course F2P is good enough to be enjoyed despite its limited content.

It still offers its own fun aspects, like it or not. Might not match up to all the fun in P2P but has its own glory too.

Yeah, like that zaryte bow

recharge costs = ammo.

So, all melee weapons are overpowered, at least.

this combat triangle finally makes sense...

The old F2P / P2P arguments will rage forever. The point about no "item shop" is a good one though, as in many that are free play with item buy, the free players are always at a disadvantage, while in RS F2P, it is a level playing field - I don't know, would you rather have access to all the content, but be disadvantaged unless you buy certain shop items.

As for others, this is another "best free MMO":

http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/3-free-mmo-games-online/ - all 3 are "item shop", however, and a chunky download - it seems that in some cases, games which could not drum up enough subscription commitment get re-invented with item shops.

Nah, RS f2p isn't anywhere near to second most popular free MMORPG.

Maplestory, for example, has 100 million accounts total and the Global version (North American and some other countries) has over 10 million players. Plus, it's completely free on all maps and skills. The only thing you pay for are cosmetic items and such from the item shop but you can play it totally free.

The first few posts in this thread basically proves OrTradeMe's post. Members recently seem to see nothing past exp and money. F2P can make less money and less exp, but that does not make it intrinsically worse as a game. Being forced into a smaller area, F2P still has areas outside of the G.E in which players interact which has lead to it having an actual community, opposed to the shambles P2P has. F2P can be very fun as long as you think past exp and money. The game has it much more simple in terms of equiptment and combat which leads to PvP mini-games and the PvP worlds being much more accessible than the alternate P2P versions. Members has some very bad traits which luckily do not transfer fully over to F2P which actually keeps much of the 'old' charm of Runescape.

A majority of members cannot give a valid opinion on F2P as it is so different from P2P that you need experience of it to do so. However, A majority do not have this experience and will say their opinion with nothing to back it up. Much like many who compare RS to WoW have no backing, this goes along the same lines.

I do agree that F2P may not be as popular as it is said, but you have to remember that those who go on to members all started in F2P. A very small minority went straight to members, which does mean a majority of the accounts made for Runescape intended to play the game for free knowing they could. With games which have micro transactions, it is hard to differentiate those who play for free and those who pay, which often takes them off lists.

Good point Danz. When I was F2P it was fun. But I could never go back to F2P. My time enjoying F2P is over.

Also, what other people haven't really talked about, is that this discussion is about whether RS F2P is the most popular FREE MMO. I don't know a whole lot of free mmos. The few I do know of are a lot less popular than RS..

It's true that P2P is more about exp, money and items. But F2P as good it may be in standing together (Clans, Clan wars, Role playing) etc, it is to limited to enjoy. I got 82 mining in F2P, and combat 100+ (without summoning), and many more skills. My favourite place was Karamja fishing, then cut a tree near the docks, cook my lobsters and head to Lesser demons to get Rune meds and levels!

And i am a player who likes to fight for free players, as i would HATE it big time if next Bonus EXP weekend is not for free players as well. So with all that said, i am not a F2P hater, i am someone who loves big monsters to cut to shreds, awesome swords and great teamwork.

Lol I am pure F2per but I hate bonus EXP weekends. Ruins the purpose of enjoying the game and encourages people to speed up. Miss the times of Karamja fishing haha.

I hate to tell you this, but Maplestory is basically a bunch of bots. I'm not saying everyone playing Maplestory is, I'm just say the majority. This may sound odd to you guys, but I'm thinking about going F2P for a month or two because sometimes I feel P2P simply has too much to do, and when it comes to myself, I can't stick to one thing very long before I'm browsing the RS screenshots thread and saying, "Oh! I'll do that! That looks fun!" I'm sure I'm not alone, either. ;)

I sometimes wonder how Runescape can be so popular when people IRL are like "ewww RS? That lame game? Hawhawhawhaw".
