I thought rune defenders were pretty good already. Won't the Dragon Defenders be TOO good?

If you think that a whip is useful for any high level nowadays you are clearly either T or just very (and I mean extremely) S

Rapier is categorically better for anyone who has access to it...

And no I don't see how this update would affect whip any more than it does the other one handed weapons.

Nothing wrong with an Infinity Minus One Sword.

Yes, I only posted to link you to TV Tropes. You're welcome. :-P

I still use my whip over my rapier on the majority of my slayer tasks, for one simple reason: the rapier degrades based on attack turns (both yours AND your opponent's), and many of the slayer tasks I like to do are in multi-combat areas, with often two or three enemies attacking me at one time. Given that I am already hitting low 600s with my whip + turmoil + extremes and I am using a combat familiar for added damage, the DPS boost from the rapier is overkill in those situations and it is not (imo) worth the accelerated "charge" depletion. Therefore, I save the rapier for tasks like Dragons and Abyssal Demons, where I am fighting monsters with high HP that are in single-combat zones. Then again, there are some people who are efficiency nuts and prize the extra 3k exp an hour enough to use Overloads on slayer tasks, so...

I disregard any chaotic degrade cost into profit analysis because I dg for fun, and tokens are easy to get

But yeah that claim is reasonable, if you are strapped for cash and don't have an excess of tokens. personally I always use rapier for slayer situations but that's just me.

Either way, the claim that whip will spike in price due to this update is pretty ridiculous, unless it's picked up by a merch clan or something. whip prices have been more or less stable aside from their buyouts

My point is that there will likely be a "blip" in the GE on certain items -- particularly those more popular weapons (like whips) -- which will be entirely a result of the kiddies and their knee jerk reaction to the issuance of a Dragon Defender.

You have your right to your opinion, but I just don't see the evidence behind this. we can go back and forth all day.

Based on what? >_> Why would a new defender increase the demand for an item when defenders already existed as well as better alternative weaponry?

I guess he has invested in whips...

Want a laugh?

Oh -- THAT and the ensuing riot which will occur the moment that "PKer Fred" realizes that he's hitting 3 HP fewer after the whole armour absorbing thingie comes out ...

I'm looking forward to that :P

To be honest, so am I ...

You don't see any evidence of anything that disagrees with your opinion. I'd call it one of your "charms" but you don't have any. :P

Point is -- if it's not whips, it will be something else. A knee jerk reaction requires no logic, it simply happens when it happens ...

So then by that logic trying to predict one is silly. lol. so is all of technical analysis in trading, but then i guess ignoring a hundred-billion dollar business is inconsequential.

OT: also, considering dragon defender doesn't change overall rank order for chaotic weaponry (maul>cls>rapier), i don't think it's actually that big of a deal. on the other hand, damage reduction is.

People panic-selling their DFS is a very obvious knee-jerk reaction to this. Sad thing is, as soon as Jagex releases the damage-absorbing update, I can almost guarantee that DFS will be bought out. Shame I don't have the money to speculate.

i'm expecting a large loss (several million) on my DFS, as i think the price will definitely fall and rise like you said, but stabilize at a lower price. but yeah it's still useful for frosts, which i like to semi-afk and thus don't use antifire pots... other than that i'm pretty sure spectral or cks will cover every situation dfs would be useful for.

As long as the dragon defender has less than 7 strength, there will still be people who insist DFS is the best shield because OFMGSTRBONUS.

Hype, more people will probably be using combat with one of the most anticipated items ever. Also since soaking will probably decrease demand for 2h weps which will be more affected by soaking than fast 1h weps.

I assume DFS will have a damage soak bonus on it, so I'm not quite sure why it's crashing lol. I assume if you were to have two maxed combat-ers dueling with the only difference being the DFS vs Dragon Defender, that the individual with the DFS would win the majority of the time.

Your problem, hun, is that you're "elite" -- and as such you've got your groove on for the top quality gear -- best weapons, potions the whole enchilada -- which is just fine for you. Really.

I lol'd

It's all about supply and demand.

Yes it is, and I honestly do not see demand rising that much. if you really want to get into the details of it, the only other purchasable substitute good for a whip is GSes, which are actually quite different. generally GS's are useless but in the cases where they are useful, they are more likely more than 5% better than a whip.

OT: ~5% DPS is actually pretty significant, but nothing groundbreaking. i still don't think it's enough to warrant using DD over DFS for situations like melee vs melee pvp. bandos is arguable but if the DD is very hard to get and always risked, perhaps not.

You forget. This is the whip. They allow us to change the colour at barb assault - price rises. Change the look of it - price rises. I'm not advocating that it will, but frankly I'd toss a coin. Plus, if enough people THINK it will rise, or it rises slightly, people will buy them because the price is rising.

To above poster:

1.) Do you KNOW that?

2.) Most combat in the game does not involve maxed players with identical high end gear except for the shield slot...

What I find ironic:

Kaiba184 asks:

Ok i really only got one question that has probably already been asked, but are you guys planning to introduce a dragon crossbow anytime soon?

Mod Mark: Yes, but not until we have rebalanced the combat triangle.

~ 10 September 2009

So they find it overpowered to release a Dragon crossbow, but they are a-okay with releasing a Dragon defender? Either Jagex is moronic enough to not know what impact it has, or they are (unknowingly) jaded towards melee (← my guess) or they simply don't know how their game works. I don't care whether or not damage soaking gets released, this will increase Melee's already high DPS even further while Rangers and Mages are basically left in the cold wondering when their stuff is coming.

All of the above, plus they probably forgot about the dragon crossbow. Anyway, now that we have a Chaotic Crossbow, it would be redundant to release the Dragon Crossbow and would probably piss a lot of people off, since even if they only gave it a +100 range bonus, it would more-than-likely have a special attack and it would not degrade... So it would make the people who bought Chaotic Crossbows feel cheated.

I think it'd be pretty funny if dragon defenders ended up being ranged shields.

I guess it'd also help out the whole combat triangle balance thing, but it'd be more for teh lulz.

But how is it possible that a metal fork can deflect flying tomatos better than a metal plate?

Speaking of whips, it seems to be pretty low risk on investing them anyway, since they are like in their lowest now and dragon defender or the pvp absorb wont have any harm to them.

But if you aim for something bigger... I would say after dragon defender is out, it would be interesting to see how those 2hs, claws and dfs would reestablish its price.

Hmm, good question. This calls for a scientific experiment. Quick, somebody fetch a bucket of tomatoes, a set of dinner utensils, and a mime!

This week in RuneScape brings our new defender rework' date=' affecting all defenders up to the coveted [b']dragon defender[/b]! Players will find that the attack and strength bonuses of existing defenders have been reduced to more reasonable levels to balance their new purpose- the first armor ever to feature a damage soak for Summoning damage over 200! Bronze will start at a 1% soak all the way up to an impressive 25% soak for the new dragon defender, dropped on the top floor of the Warrior's Guild!

So... they're going to give us less offense with all the defenders in exchange for.... the ability to soak Summoning damage. And it'll only be Summoning damage that's over 200. Y'know how often you get a hit for 200+ with summoning? Let alone actually BE hit for 200+ with summoning? (This is excluding familiar special attacks, as Protect from Summoning is supposed to easily negate that)

I said Jagex would keep their track record of either updating stuff to suck or updating it to be useless. It would appear we now get both.

And now defenders are going to be considered trash even MORE when the defence update rolls around. That is, if that update doesn't suck....

I get the feeling that's sarcasm. Couldn't find anything on the forums about that; more importantly, posting "This week in Runescape" on a Friday? Really? Plus, why would defenders be good against familiars anyhow?
