To me a gimmick is something like Kinect. This is something that doesn't add into your core experience at all. This is literally a gimmick and the style of games you can play on the kinect is severely limited to the hardware. Even the Wii controller limited certain gameplay, to an extent. The new Wii U controller seems more like it can help just add a little extra to a core experience. An inventory system on the bottom screen for an RPG. A shot of the map or leaderboard for an FPS. I think that stuff is legitimately cool.

That all depends on whether or not the developers themselves can resist milking the gimmick, though. Overuse of the touch screen is what killed Phantom Hourglass, and a game with motion controls can be unplayable if said controls don't work well.

It looks like milking the gimmick is what Microsoft was doing with Kinect, though (And photorealistic modern shooters, but that's another topic entirely); if the little bit I saw of their conference was anything to go by. You have to give Nintendo credit for at least making new gimmicks to milk, amirite?

Edit: Serebii has an image of it. I take back what I said about it, doesn't look entirely bad or unreasonable to play.

Right. And I do think that comes on the developers more so than Nintendo.

Also from what I've heard holding the Wii U controller isn't that bad apparently.

YI've read an article on USA Today and also the British morning papers who are saying it looks like a tablet but actually it's comfortable to hold and the button layout has a natural feel to it. Amazingly enough the few people I've seen slating the controller have been 'armchair experts' with no hands-on experience, which is understandable because it looks bulky.

I think people are right to be sceptical about the use of gimmicky technology in consoles. Phantom Hourglass was ruined in a way by the touch screen controls; I also thought it wasn't long enough compared to other Zelda handheld games such as Link's Awakening. All I can say is:

A) People thought the Wii was just as gimmicky, if not more for its time than the Wii U is, and still sold massively despite a lack of backing from third parties;

B) There does seem to be some genuinely practical applications for this as demonstrated during the conference, rather than 'Here's Wii Sports and a white TV remote to play it with';

C) The Zelda game seemed to use it effectively, controls still being used conventionally, but the touch screen used for menu navigation.

I don't think the next Xbox or PS4 will come soon.

The Wii U looks like it just has current gen graphics (for a console), maybe even a little worse.

BF3 doesn't sell me on it because I can get that on PC months before.

looking forward to ocarina of time remake more than skysword, i hope skysword is going to be as glitchy as past zeldas

I have to admit, I don't think I've encountered a single glitch in all the Zelda games I have played, which is Ocarina, Majoras mask and Twilight Princess, with multiple plays through each.

oot=infinite sword glitch, bomb hovering and many other glitches with bombs, many boss key skips, many out of bounds, door of time skip, random bottle adventure, power crouch stabbing

mm = isg, bomb glitches, out of bounds, boss key skips, bottle dupe, and many more icba to type

twlight princess is glitchy but i dont know to much about them ones

and ww= zombie hovering (can hover around after you die by mashing jump slash iirc) need the tingle tuner to get health back if you want to land though

edit: just found out deku sticks are gonna be nerfed in oot 3ds so they do less damage than koroki sword, :( no more 1 cycle queen gohma

your such a mother [bleep]er. whats with all this bombchu [cabbage]? all everyone who likes this [cabbage] is stupid. ur a [bleep]ing cheater. u did that the wrong way, thats not how to get past the king zora u cheater. u suck and i wont continue watching all ur [cabbage]! videos

No way will WiiU be comparable to PS3/360. While we don't know many technical specs, IBM already hinted at it having a Power7 CPU. While I'm not very technical myself, what people have been saying across the internet is that that will be much powerful than 360's Xenon. It would be dumb to use such a powerful CPU and pair it with a piece of crap GPU.

Also, watch this gif on this post on GAF and tell me this does not look better than current consoles:

http://www.neogaf.co...6&postcount=313

Note: It's a fairly large gif (over 7MB) which is why I didn't directly post the gif on here.

The lighting is phenomenal. And this is still early. If past is any indication, these Zelda tech demos always look worse than the actual game when it comes out...

Well apparently the montage used PS3 and 360 footage, Fils-Aime says it was because the Wii U is a whole year from release. The console will definitely 1060p HD and the Zelda footage for obvious reasons could not have been from another console.

So that explains why it looked as if it had current gen graphics. Glad that's cleared up, lives were depending on it.

Looking forward to:

Bioshock Infinite

Battlefield 3

Gears of War 3

Halo 4

TLoZ: Skyward Sword

I agree with the people here about how they should probably be more focused on core gameplay as opposed to bell and whistle gimmicks. Example: I thought the last Mario Kart game was horrendous in comparison to the one for N64 because I just couldn't get comfortable with the controls.

The Wii U looks a little how do I say it, Strange? I mean through the trailer anyway it just looks like a new controller. I think I'll stick with my Homebreew Wii and my free games, free movies, and free music. Thank you very much :P

Skyrim should be fun. I'm actually quite addicted to Oblivion 4 right now. When my friend comes back to town I'm going to basically attach to his Ps3 for a few days xD

lol a hell of a lot of nintendo stroking here

why are people comparing the Wii U to the DS? why not compare the Wii U to the... i don't know, the Wii?

while the Wii did sell a lot more, a high % of it became a paperweight. crap games with no 3rd party support. only the biggest nintendo fanboys actually forced themselves to like it.

Wii U is Nintendo playing catch up with Sony and Xbox. They finally realized people only care so much about their gimmicky controls and 10 year old graphics. Even if the Wii U turns out to be "more powerful" as Nintendo's rabid fanboys are bragging it out to be (what happened to gameplay not graphics argument... oh right lol those people ate crap), next-gen of 360 and PS3 will be much better and Nintendo will be behind again

Why not have both graphics and gameplay? Graphics can only take a console so far; a next-gen 360 and PS3 will need more than just a graphics upgrade to leave Nintendo behind, especially if Nintendo starts getting a lot of 3rd party support this time.

And 360/PS3 are playing 'catch up' with the PC. Just because something is more powerful doesn't mean it'll be chosen or preferred.

That being said again its going to come down to the games. Arguing about tech specs at this point is kind of pointless because Nintendo hasn't even begun to talk about them.

i don't know let's go back in time when nintendo fanboys were trying to convince everyone graphics don't matter for the Wii's release while i'm saying that exact sentiment "you can have both"

it just means the Wii will be behind again with 3rd party games because Nintendo is behind again in tech specs. unless you're telling me the CPU/GPU development is going to be stagnant between now and when Sony/MS releases their consoles

pretty sure Sony already makes PCs, i don't see how they're trying to catch up with it.

Just like Sony and Microsoft are rabidly shoehorning motion controls in

Say what you want about Nintendo, I'm guessing they've had a hell of a lot more console sales than the other two. The majority of Wii games bight be [cabbage], but Nintendo proved that they could sell [cabbage] and come out ahead.

Though I only really watched EA's conference, and even then only for Bioware's segment :ugeek: .

unless you're a stockholder for nintendo, why would you orgasm over their sales?

all it means is that nintendo has a lot of sheep that they can milk.

And unless you're a fanboy, it shouldn't matter so long as you get a good game out of it.

that has nothing to do with what i said

You seem to have missed the "fanboy" part. Not worth making a list when I have limited experience with Wii games and you seem to have already made up your mind about it

I wasn't talking about whether or not the Wii was good. I was saying that the Wii was successful. You don't like it, but apparently millions of others did. Why? It was easy to pick up and had family friendly games. Graphics aren't everything, apparently.

The original point is that, while Nintendo is making a console that will apparently have current or better graphics, it's Sony and Microsoft that are focusing mostly on motion controls. Bash them all you like, they found something that sells extremely well and their competitors are rushing to emulate that and shoehorn it into as many games as possible. And again, if having next-gen graphics is that important, get a good PC.

SSBB - MLG Pro Circuit (yes, people make money out of playing it)

MKWii

New Super Mario Bros Wii

Dead Space Extraction

LoZ:TP

Red Steel (and 2)

Super Mario Galaxy (and 2)

Metroid Prime: Corruption

Metriod: Other M

Kirby's Epic Yarn

* A whole raft of Virtual Console games, including LoZ:OoT, one of if not the most critically acclaimed video game of all time.

* Backwards compatibility with all GC games, of which there are quite a few 'good' games.

We've not even begun to talk about what the Wii's actual target market is into. Like them, scave them, hell blow them up with fireworks for all I care, but Wii Fit was one of the company's biggest success stories. It doesn't help people lose weight, it's not even a game technically, but it sold in bulk and made lots of profit. End of.

If any companies are currently playing catch up it is undoubtedly Sony and Microsoft. The amount of effort and money they have put into emulating Wii's success with motion controls shows just how far behind they were in console sales. Love it or hate it, the fact is that it outsold the other two. It may not cater to hardcore gamers as much, but it sure as hell caters to more people overall.

Unlike Microsoft and Sony who aren't exactly having the best of time with their motion controls as they are nothing more than gimmicks in nearly every game, slowing you down with arm waving where buttons would be better, Nintendo has brought something which actually innovates. Once again, they will be ahead of the curve, and this time they not only have the innovation but the 3rd party publishers to plug the hole of hardcore gamers.

It isn't good when people are incredibly biased fanboys not listening to reason, but it's just as bad when people are incredibly biased the other way and don't listen to reason or actually think.

Edit: thought this was quite funny:
