ford_rule
whatever u do, dont join cos u think its easy money. u would be legally classified as a [developmentally delayed] as soon as you do. stay away from the army it is pointless and there is no need for people to die in it. hohto
Important thing. Yes, world would be a better place for everyone if no1 had an army and we didn't fight, but that's something that won't happen. We have been fighting for millenniums and it's not going to stop anytime soon. Finland has a mandatory army (means that every male who is physically or mentally able must go either there or then do some civil service which takes longer) and I see it as a good thing for a country that has 5,2million people. Personally I'm joining army 10/7/2006. I'd rather die for what I believe in than live for anything else.Name Removed by Administrator ~Turtlefemm
indy500fan
if you are not very physically fit, join the air force. their basic training is a synch. army wouldnt be too hard, just a little harder than the air force. neither of them are anywhere close as hard as the marines, and you have a much smaller chance of fighting in the army than if you were in the marines. the military isnt a bad route to go, the pay isnt great but free room and board. plus you can usually get free college out of it. vladmoney
I recommand you do something non-combat. Like computers? ITs def. not a bad way to pay for college, but its going to be tough cause you probably gona be called to fight after you complete your training. Bubsa
hohto is right and I respect him alot for his commitment to his Nation's policy. Personally, however, while realising that it's necessary for the forces to exist, I find it sad. The thought of disbanding armies and air forces and living in harmony is ludicrous, but it doesn't make it any better for me. I could never join the army, air force, navy or anything like that. It's not so much the fear of being killed yourself that worries me, but the thought that, whether infantry or or non-combat, your work is contributing, in some way, to killing someone. Someone who themselves is innocent and has just lost their lives because of a country's diplomacy. That person could have so easily been your ally, had they been on a different side. Cheesy to quote a computer game, I know, but allow me to say: "We're not tools of the government, or any one else". It angers me how people behind desks declare war and never see a dead body in their lives. It's hypocritical of me to say that I know, with many countries now being a democracy, electing these desk-sitters to power as they reflect the country's interest. But I just couldn't join the army. This is how much you all raised for charity. Thank you.

But, don't join the army just because you think it's going to be "easy money" or "free easy college". I guarantee, you will work for every bit of money you make. Mr_Putter
I couldn't join the army. Not because I have any problem with the morals (I might more closely consider the morals if I ever joined/was thinking of joining the army). Mostly I don't have a problem cuz I'm in Canada and it's not likely I'd be going and killing people, unless a full war broke out. But the reason I can't join the army is because I have back and knee problems, severely reducing my mobility and agility. I'm plenty fit, and plenty strong (I work a few days a week, and play hockey), but I'd be entirely incapable of fighting in a war. My skeleton just hurts too much.

I was mainly talking on Finnish army :P Like I said, we have a mandatory army here. Either you join the army or then go to a civil service which means like 13 months (I got no real idea how long, over 12 months however) working somewhere without salary. We have had one at our school's library for example. Our army is either 6, 9 or 12 months and every man (and volunteered women) has to go there. It is possible to serve there without a weapon. Basically you run and train with others, but you don't touch a gun. Might be a bit funny looking :P. I personally got to the place where I'm going "1 year too early", it was supposed to be totally full but I got there over the limits. I wanted to get there a bit earlier because I don't want to have 1 useless year. I'll finish my school at february, so there would be a big gap between it and the end of my army (when I'm able to study again) if I had joined in summer 2007. Our army is there to protect us. We aren't part of NATO and we haven't sent our troops to any wars. Some Finns are "protecting the peace" (dunno exact term for those people who do it) at places like Bosnia. They aren't there shooting with their guns, they are there to look after the peace. Finns haven't fought in any other was apart from the ones against Russia (we were defending ourselves in them) and a minor war against Germany (mainly faked due our peace contract with Soviet Union). Few Finns have joined in the armies of some other countries (Lauri T̮̦̉̉rni, a.k.a. Larry Thorne joined US Army for example and died in Vietnam), tho. In 20th century we had 2 wars against Russia and we have over 1000km boarder with them, so a mandatory army is a must for us. Without it Soviet Union would have attacked us again after they didn't manage to take over us in the 2nd war. While the cold war was still on, they showed a lot of interest in our place. There was almost 300 million people in Soviet Union and 5million in Finland, so we really needed an organised army. In Nowadays it's easier to be in our army than for example 40 years ago (more holidays, less running and smaller camps) and that's because Russia isn't as big threat as the Soviet Union was. My point is that not every army is made just to kill. We need our army to protect ourselves and we are only read shoot our weapons if our homeland and lives are threatened. I'd rather die for what I believe in than live for anything else.Name Removed by Administrator ~Turtlefemm

Pyro
The very concept of an army is people who fight the wars of other men. While it may be different in a lot of nations today, I get the idea that you're joining the US army. Say hi to George for me.

weezcake
I personally hate the army and the military, though they are necessary at times. I hate the fact that they are trained to destroy instead of build-- I am quite a pacifist, and war is not appealing to me. I also refuse to fight for America. At least in this ghastly state of things. I do not believe in this new big brother type of government that's being introduced into the US, which is supposed to be FREE. I will only pick up a gun and a uniform if it was a desperate situation-- but I will not fight for Dubya and his homies. And remember, "this is a rich man's war, but a poor man's fight". But I am realistic. Without an military, we could not live. Humans, as with any animals, cannot live without conflict. Without the threat of military strength, a state cannot stay sovereign. I am glad there are many people willing to enlist and risk their lives. Though I'd love to live in a military-free world, I support the troops-- always. ==================================Retired tip.it moderator.Teaching and inspiring. Personally I'm totally against NATO, even tho it would make it possible to get rid of mandatory army and get tens of thousands young men to work life 1 year earlier. I'm joining army, but that's because it will help me to learn how to protect my homeland if it is needed. If Finland ever comes a NATO country, I'll definately think moving to some other country. I don't want our troops to risk their lives for a flag with red and white stripes and stars on a blue area. I'm already against EU, but NATO is even worse. I'd rather die for what I believe in than live for anything else.Name Removed by Administrator ~Turtlefemm

Barking-Loon
I agree with absolutley everything Hohto has said on this thread so far. (And even our countries military systems works similiar. :o ) I once had a chance to do mandatory military service but I lied to the shrink so I got classified as mentally unstable. I did it because I wanted to study instead of running around in the snow hugging a rifle. Sadly I dropped out of school, got a job, got laid off and now searching for a new one daytime and sit infront of the computer all night long. I consider avoiding the military service to be the biggest mistake of my life. Oh well, will go back to school this autumn hopefully. Surprised you havent killed yourself yet, cause you know, "no one deserves to live". That makes me sick.
