There is an absolute crapstorm going on over in Runescape General Discussion. It is hilarious.

Link.

It's a REALLY big shaft.

I didn't catch fire, I used the can of hairspray as a flamethrower and pointed it at my arm.

how are you going to ignore my posts when I'm offering to let you live as my vassal in two weeks time?

And if I get banned for my (miniscule) participation in this, my Tavern-based email is [email protected].

And it was a lot funnier before the mods/admins removed a lot of the troll posts.

*shares RAEGpopcorn with Mask* It's freakin' delicious, isn't it?

I dont think they'll ban the curious, amused posters such as yourself Stork. But yes, there seems to be a lot of banning today from that "storm". lol

Well, I may have been slightly egging them on. And according to some people, they're just handing out bans left and right, so I figured I'd be prepared.

And today's storm was one of the things that makes me glad we gave the Admins such a headache that they don't bother with us any more. It means that if I have an issue with the Tavern, I can talk to somebody I know well instead of someone whom I don't.

Case closed?

Also:

Banning people for posting on a topic they advertised for people to post on....

I think the various arguements between Tavern and Admin show two things:

1) There are some times good reasons behind extensive moderation.

2) Extensive moderation causes people to quit and people to get mad.

Its about finding a balance...giving people the ability to respond as neccessary, but not to respond to EVERY infraction with 'YOU MUST OBEY THE RULES OR ELSE YOU WILL BE

DESTROYED'

Well I knew you wouldn't agree. I know how you hate facing facts.

Yep. I, personally, like B12's approach to forum moderation - people can lock/unlock their own threads, and there's only a couple mods who step in only if something is really, really bad. And you can always PM one of the few moderators to figure out whether or not a potential topic is going to instantly go to topic hell.

The thing is that before this whole mess there were a number of people calling for harsher moderation because of the amount of trolls in GD. I'd assume some of them are rioting now, all because they banned a friend instead of one of the trolls that they really wanted gone.

I can say I'm friends with a few of the ones that are leaving, but it's hard to say "The mods [bleep]ed up big time" when the ones that are still here are the reason the board's such a mess today.

I don't agree on lock/unlock your own threads...mainly because locking/unlocking is rarely done and not really that important....I mean the last three games where people have said 'DO NOT POST' people have not posted.

Where as other times people could just bump a thread like 'There has been a study done on black people and it has been shown they are less intelligent' and only allow people who agree with them to post.

(the study is real, by the by)

Personally we had a fairly good system going on here...But its about finding a mod that people accept as a mod, can't do that out in the big wide forum.

And, of course, changing the rules would require a total change over in the Moderation/Admin team...so realistically, nothing will change.

Well I knew you wouldn't agree. I know how you hate facing facts.

The thing is that before this whole mess there were a number of people calling for harsher moderation because of the amount of trolls in GD.

Of course, my solution would be to create a poll for each forum, and allow each forum to decide whether they wanted harsh rules, lax rules or whatever...within a general frame work...and then assign the moderators based on that-their personal preferences.

Course it would have to be a public poll, and would probably require someone to sit down and weed through the votes, only counting those who were actually involved in the forum on a decent level.

Then you get into the mire of 'who can decide that', 'lets have a vote', 'no, wait, we need an arbiter'.

Personally, the obvious solution is to try it for a month, hold another poll, with a different arbiter, and see if people are happy or not.

Well I knew you wouldn't agree. I know how you hate facing facts.

True...But why is that?

What it needs is moderators and users who actually give a dime to defend their forums from outside influences... The Tavern started out with one game, Hegemony, which was all about fighting for yourself and rejecting what everyone else said...Thats pretty much the defination of trolling...And yet, if we are the ONLY forum that would work as a community what does that say? Only trolls can work together?

So what I am saying is that the Tavern didn't just magic itself into being...decisions were made...There was a Moderator(me) who took an interest, and users(you guys) who were guarded, but let them in. I was let in because I was similar to what was already there...I respected people's choices and tried to accommodate them as best I could...I didn't become a nodding yesman and I didn't turn into Dr No...and because of that I could moderate and people could accept that moderation.

The problems arise when other people, users or whoever, get involved who are not respected, and do not try to earn respect, but just assume that it will be given automatically.

In times gone past people accepted that Moderators, that Admin, deserved their respect...but now, 10 something years down the line, there is a large population who don't give too hoots about who someone is, if they disagree they angrily state it.

In many ways mirroring so many other social systems where the disorganised masses rise up against the elites...what form that will take...I don't know...but eventually these things have a habit of resolving themselves.

Life...as they say...goes on.

Well I knew you wouldn't agree. I know how you hate facing facts.

The difference is that the original Tavernites did it in a game, as part of a game, and I'm guessing you all knew that. The trolling that ensued today was over the game and involved actual hard feelings.

It's like, playing as an [wagon] doesn't mean you are an [wagon] out of the game.

Well, it is pleasant that the admins generally leave us alone now, but that is most likely because hex left, and returned on a different persona.

Certainly true.

Though in many ways today is looking at dog that bites someone and saying 'It was a good think they didn't feed it or it would be even more vicious'.

You can't build a system based on mutual distrust and expect everyone to trust one and other.

Users don't trust the Mods because the Mods do silly things.

Mods don't trust the Users because the Users do silly things.

It also doesn't help that the traditional responce from the mods is:

'You have violated the rules, this is the rule you have violated, read the rules again.'

And no one is allowed to discuss any mod action.

It also doesn't help that some people intentionally try to cause arguments simply because it is funny.

People need to start earning trust and showing respect...no point being the perfect user if one day you get an impersonal 'You have violated the rules' pm.

Well I knew you wouldn't agree. I know how you hate facing facts.

I was just reading TIME magezine, and I realized that they were making some sort of movie or TV series based on Song of Fire and Ice.

It is known as "Game of Thrones" on HBO, and it seems to have the main characters and such like House Stark, House Baratheon, House Lannister, and House Targaryen. Not sure if it is based on the story or if it just set in the world, but a big emphasis seems to be placed on political intrigue and "the wall."

Master of your domain? I am Lord of the manor, Queen of the castle, King of the county!

The only difference between a disagreement between friends, an argument between strangers, and a feud between enemies is the ability to reconcile.
