Grim_ Posted April 13, 2011 Share Posted April 13, 2011 It's quite fun, at least after you get past some of the exercises that you do to get in shape (ie wall sits for intervals of 5-10 minutes and hitting the gym for squats). At least for the foil (and modern fencing) it's almost all muscle memory (or insanely quick reflexes, but I find muscle memory to be better [mainly because it works well with better reflexes]) and quick wrist movement. If you want to pick it up, I'd advise to look into possible classes at the community or fencing clubs that are looking for new recruits. It's a great way to get into better shape (and you get to hit people. with swords.) and is in general very very fun. EDIT: Oh, and the rapier I've ordered is on the way. Should be interesting (I think there are some people nearby who would be willing to teach me the renaissance style fencing techniques). Oh and god damned Californian laws that forbid me from buying a butterfly knife (fairly understandable) and a sword cane. (I have been able to sell a surprising number of bicycles on craigslist so I have a bit of cash to use, and I've already bought all of the rpg books that I am using). Finding your local SCA My branch has Practical Fencing, Show Fencing, Throwing Weapons and Heavy Fighting. Everything from daggers to claymores. One of the fencing sabre-thingies is more like a longsword, and could probably slice you in half if it was sharp. :-# Also, my once-crush friend seems to be getting into more arguments at the lunchtable than before. I'm starting to wonder if giving her knives was a bad idea in even more ways. Not that I think she'd actually flip out that much, of course. Also, depending on how it was used the rapier could be very, very deadly, because good luck blocking a lunge after a couple of stabs to the face and the hands.
