You want to believe that Cleverbot is lying because then it is an Artifical Intelligence, where as in actuality it is using the algorithm to choose a statement from the 20 million previous conversations.

I assume it looks for key words in phrases and then compares it to words in what the user has just said... And if none are found, it responds with a random sentence from a previous conversation. It seems really simple to me. Not sure why you don't understand the idea behind a basic input/output system.

 

It doesn't know what any of this stuff is, it doesn't have an opinion on what any of this stuff is, and it is not doing anything on purpose. It is doing it because it is programmed to look for X in a sentence, search it's data stores, and then return Y if it is found, Z if not found. It is NOTHING more than this.

Well it is...Its a venus fly trap for people who want to believe that Artifical Intelligence is just around the corner.

I know AIs aren't "around the corner", they're right behind us, what is defined as artificial intelligence is commonplace. However we are far from able to create an artificial mind.

So what you are saying is....joke books are artifical intelligences.

They ask you questions, and give you answers.

You can ask them questions and there is some possiblity that they will say something related.

No. Artifical Intelligence means something man made, which has intelligence.

While Cleverbot is manmade, it does not have even the remotest speck of intelligence, as it is, at present, incapable of discerning meanings of words.

In the same way that a 1,000 monkies, sitting at a 1,000 typewritters, for a 1,000 years, will occassional type something intelligent.

It does not, therefore, mean that the monkies are any more sentient than they were at the start of the experiment.

Idu, it doesn't have to fit on all points, one is enough to define somathing as an AI. And in the Turing test, Cleverbot fooled the judge ~40% of the time.

Errr... That description fits Cleverbot pretty well. Autonomous entity which observes (Reads what you type) and acts (Gives a response) upon an environment (The chat window) and directs it's activity into achieving goals (Giving the illusion of intelligence.

 

Honestly, from what I have seen thus far, I'm fairly certain that were I to judge a turing contest with cleverbot, it would have a 0% success rate.

 

You see it as intelligent because you wish it were intelligent. It is simply giving you an impression of intelligence which you have bought rather deeply into.

The kind of environment in question is a physical environement and the observation is through senses, as such an example to such an agent would be a thermostat.

Also, one could make the argument that a door is an artifical intelligence, since it chooses to let people through or not, based on an analogue database, comprised on hinges, locks and weight.

 

And, to my mind, if you are make an argument that a door is intelligent then your basic premise is wrong.

Well, regardless of your choice to say nothing is intelligent because then something else could be called intelligent, Cleverbot is officially an AI and it has recieved awards for being so, you don't see any of that with a door.
