Barroth is the first real roadblock in the game, to be honest.

the best advice I can give is practise. Learn it's patterns, learn when you get an opening, try not to stay in front of it, and watch out for that tail.

Let me explain this in simple terms.

[hide]barothflowchart.jpg[/hide]

The only way you're going to beat Barroth is with practise.

PRACTISE, PRACTISE, PRACTISE.

Learn where to stand, when to dodge, when to charge, when you have an opening, etc.

Yeah, I just got up to my tier 5 urgent on MH to hunt the alatreon, and it is genuinely difficult.

From somebody who didn't really have any trouble with Barroth or Diablos, Alatreon is bloody strong, fast, and has some really annoying attacks. His arial tailspin is utterly unpredictable, and by the time you realise what hit you, you'll be down 3/4 of your health bar and on the floor.

Fighting the Barroth in the Arena as practice. This strongly reminds me of the dragonslaying plan from "Epic."

It's actually not that hard, even in ragemode. It has a very simple attack rhythm, though I can definitely see fighting it being a battle of endurance.

Anyways, right now I'm on the Royal Lulu. Any tips?

get it out of the water. in water, its a friggen demon on steroids, and has lots of power to boot. however, the only problem i had with it was that my hamer was pretty slow, even slower underwater.... the same problem with the barroth, it gets me before i can do the gigasmash mauever.

... Earthsage? It's pathetic in water, all you need to do is get up to the water's surface and it's a prime target for a hammersmash.

Anyways, I mostly meant what weapon should I use? I've got a Ludroth Bone Maul, Ploshasta, Bone Blade+, Ludroth's Nail, Bone Tomahawk, and with a little work I can get a Switch Axe.

Also, should I go with Piscine or Jaggi armour? Maybe Ludroth Greaves instead of Piscine Leggings?

Ah, you do know how skills work, right?

You need to get a certain number of points in a skill before it activates.

Let's take my agnaktor armour as an example. The full set gives +15 guard, which activates the skill guard+2. If I remove the torso, I only have +10 guard, giving me the skill guard+1. If I remove another piece, it drops below ten and the skill does not activate at all.

You usually need to wear full sets to get any decent skills in low rank, but combinations at high rank are better.

As for Royal Ludroth, use a fire weapon if you have one, and then use whichever weapon you like. Don't try to specialise in all of the weapons, because then you'll be mediocre in every one. Pick 2 weapons, 3 if you really want, and focus on those.

I have every weapon available, though I only use the Hammer and SnS. I'd keep the lance incase I ever need it, since I'm not too horrible with one, but I think I'll ditch the Greatsword. And I'm going to get a switch axe, becase they are cool, portable, and have high damage.

i have the switch axe just to see what it can do.. the upgrades are horribly expensive from very early on, and require a lot of item gathering and mission fishin to get them all. the hammer is going to be my main wep, lance as the extreme backup, and the sword and dagger for gathering and little stuff. or big stuff. the bowgun im going to say goodbye to, scince its absolutley useless to me right now. and ive wasted spectaculur ammounts of things making ammo.. ross, should i keep the bowgun, just in case?

... i think ill keep it. ive invested into it, made the three heavy bowgun parts from scratch, then uped them to level three.. and i have a crapload of ammo for it..

Can Hammer attacks sever tails? I'm trying to decide whether to take a Ludroth Splashhammer or Bone Axe+ to fight the Barroth. I already tried fighting it with the first axe and managed to clear the mud from it's tail and do significant damage in general before dieing.

hammers are sharp, so its possible. i havent been able to hit the tail all that often, despite clearing all the mud off of its body. all of it. even on the head.

You don't, unless it naturally has an element or you have an armour with Awakening.

I was close; his tail was severed, all the mud was gone, he was tiring out, and my switchaxe sword hits were all connecting wonderfully. I was barely getting hit, and he was being repeatedly knocked over. Then, as my luck mandates, time ran out. <_<

I did get a tail, ridge, and wyvern tear from him. Dunno where the ridge came from, I tossed a throwing knife at his knee which hit and somehow managed to knock him over and make him drop the item.
