Investigators found a copy of the video game Need For Speed in one of the cars. The game involves street racing, drag racing and pursuit racing, where players attempt to evade police.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Normally I don't believe video games affect how people act in real life, but this is a little hard to ignore.

The way I see it is that the guys were into street racing before the game. As in the game didn't make them do what they do. Its because they have an interest in street racing that they play the game. And with the tuning crowd, most likely is was in a PlayStation installed in one of their cars, and what a better game to have in your street racer than a street racing game. Sounds like they were reckless before the game came along :).

That's one way of looking at it - but you can't exactly say the game discouraged it - seeing as it was in the front seat. I guess it's all perspective.

I've played Need for Speed: Most Wanted (I'm pretty sure that's the once they're referring to). I drive like a grandma. I don't understand why people would take stuff so out of perspective. To me the gaming experience is over as soon as soon as I turn off my console.

Mm I wasn't generalizing - I was just saying that in this specific instance, it looks like the game affected them.

I totally see where you're coming from on that though, it certainly takes things out of perspective for someone who plays a game then goes and races for real. Some people must actually have a weak enough mind so that they can't come out from the "game state" to reality.

It really depends on the person, I think. I've played racing games and I drive slower than Grandma. I play First Person Shooters and I can't even point a gun at another living creature (loaded or unloaded).

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

People were street racing long before Need for Speed came out. Unfortunately, these guys were not as cognizant of the difference between a controlled atmosphere (games) and the randomness of the real world.

I understand that the connection appears to be more connected in this case since it's specifically about racing but I don't really see how this is any different then any other "video game affecting real life" cases.

I believe I heard of another incident in B.C last week where street racing is rampant. In the end one car hit a powerline and was complete split in two.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

It's becoming a common occurance and I don't really think that the game and the idiots who race should be linked.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I admit I do have the "Need for Speed" sometimes, but my '96 Saturn doesn't have it in it. I do have friends though who race occasionally but they don't do it in the middle of a City. Even though it's still wrong no matter where it takes place. Their lives not mine.

Even my DAD used to street race. I'm sure that was way before NFS :)

It is very unfortunate that such avoidable incidents occur. Being responsible for investigating such crime scenes I can tell you, from what I have seen, young individuals are prone to being influenced by these games and hollywood...

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

As was mentioned racing is nothing new, but it is more dangerous than ever and young adults are subject to peer pressure, media pressure etc and their desire to be "cool".

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Recently there was an incident where I live (not my case) where a motorcycle and a 'vette were street racing... the motorcycle ended up running into the side of a car which then ran over the motorcyclist. Upon this impact the vehicle caught fire... the driver of the car survived but the motorcyclist did not... The driver of the 'vette who returned to the scene now faces charges of Homicide...

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

A friendly warning for the folks that think street racing is cool and you can take care of yourself... you may not care about your life, but what if you kill someone else with your irresponsible behavior :(

If i was a street racer my favourite game would probably be NFS. But that doesnt mean that people that play NFS want to go out and be real street racers.

Exactly, the films were the base for the games (or at least the latest 'street' version of the series), but no-one blames them.

I wish all the street racers, boy racers and chavs would all just drive off a cliff and have a race to see who can hit the ground first. After everyone has completed the "race" I declare society the winner.

I myself have played Need for speed Hot pursute very nice game but street racing is illegal in real life. I can't see it's that much fun. You should learn to keep your fantasys in game. It's not worth it in real life I play the gradtheftauto seris and it did come over me one day to shoot my neibor he is kind of a kid that never shuts his mouth. Well one day I dont remember when he made me really mad so I got my gun a paintball gun of course and shot him about 10 times and he never talked to me again. It's not the way to go. I later got suspended and my gun and PS2 sold away on ebay and I didn't even get the money so my advice keep your stuff whatever you do on video games, it aint worth it in real life.

The only time I have EVER intentionally broken the traffic laws had nothing to do with games. Some guy pulled up in a Lancer and started revving his engine and honking his horn. I felt obligated to show him up, so I beat him out of the light...he wanted to continue and I continued to oblige him. Needless to say, I started to slow down when I hit 127. I felt really guilty about the whole thing (after I got over bragging about whipping him) and now I drive like a sane person again.

I think the chav part is justified, because to me a chav is more than just someone who wears tracksuits and jewellery from Argos, it's the attitude that goes with it.

 

 

 

Some people might say i drive like a boy racer (i'm not a complete idiot, but i don't exactly stick to speed limits if i know there aren't cameras around), but i know well enough when i can put my foot down and when i'd be an idiot to.

I think you're probably right, in this case the game probably was linked to the incident, but it's impossible to generalize that to the rest of the racing game community, but i know you weren't. Besides, Gran Turismo ftw :wink:

Street racing is glorified a lot by many aspects of society and it is isn't nearly as deterred as it should be. It can be as bad drink driving.

Yeh i have played them games too,happily they dont effect me but some people it can effect them loads making them act out what they see

One of three things is possible:

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

1) The racing game influenced their racing habits.

 

 

 

2) Their racing habits influenced them to buy the racing game.

 

 

 

3) There was no connection.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Maybe I'm missing something, or maybe you have information outside that article, but it seems to me that you're jumping to conclusions and assuming the first option is true when it's really anybody's guess which one of the three it was.
