Nadams1229
hey jellyfish, let's look at your post here for a second please...yeh but firstly u understood it and secondly y wen i find it quicker to type it tht way and everyone understands it areu complaning about it? admittdly this arcticle was well written and the author has done a good job but maybe there is a more worth while writing about then complaining about the way some people type *cries at the massacre of my beloved english* missing a letter now and then is alright, but when you consistently spell it wrong, it gets more annoying and tougher to read! btw, how old are you?? because i would be amazed if you were anything over, say, 10(this is a 14-year old speaking though). I've honestly found that the kids who have terrible grammar, also have poor manners, and are completely immature. Take this situation from only 2 days ago, when i was killing some blue dragons, when a level 93 guy, with full red dragonhide, a magic shotbow, and a archers helm walks in. I simply registered him as another player who probably worked off a large part of his hindparts to get that stuff, when he suddenly bellows"stfu noobs 1 pwnz teh dragonz!" well good lord. With his grammer and attitude, i can scarcley give him the benefit of the doubt that he is anything over the age of 12. I really perceive this players as children hacking away at a keyboard!(btw, he continued talking like this for more then 15 minutes, generally acting like the football players at my school, dumb and immature) People who cut corners are okay, as long as it's sparingly and it actually makes stuff easier to read/write. I do it too, sometimes! and there friends, is the end of my big rant! and zonorhc, you missed the apostrophe in your heading for "it's"(if this has already been said, then shoot me, i only read the first and last page) -Nadams

Himmel_Engel
ill say this again: i would like to say that i disagree with the article as this is the sort of thing that lead to the formation of the english language in the first place> english is a mongrel language and a large proportion has been formed from shortening words from other languages. the use of shorthand on the internet is just a natural evolution of english and you cannot claim to be protecting it by standing against its evolution.it is exactly this sort of shorthand that has made english the greatest, largest and most versitile language on the planet and im all for it increasing its vocabulary!!!!! id also like to say that punctuation was not introduced untill printing was invented so by your standards for being a purist you shouldnt use that at all and we should all go back to using "thys" and such. if you truly believe in english you will encorage itsgrowth instead of standing in the way of every new word and ajustment of it. this is why there is a new dictionary brought out every year. the flexability of the language can only be maintained through constant evolution and change and if you know your history you would know that this sort of thing has been happening for centuarys. Those who try to stop the flow of evolution, in any form, will be washed away in its path!!!! Well, "Goodbye!" human race. We stop the flow of evolution all over, by letting those with weak traits who would normally die live. We change normal evolution and make it to what we want - via selective breeding, amongst other things. if you truly believe in english you will encorage itsgrowth instead of standing in the way of every new word and ajustment of it. this is why there is a new dictionary brought out every year. the flexability of the language can only be maintained through constant evolution and change and if you know your history you would know that this sort of thing has been happening for centuarys. We aren't opposed to English evolving and growing. We're opposed to people who can do better doing worse - which is making things harder to do. Thunderdog
Couldn't have said it better myself. If there's one thing that irritates me, it's having to translate a bunch of acronyms in order to understand a simple english sentence. It actually takes me longer to type in shorthand than it does to type like someone with an IQ above 60. Rock on.

Sy_Accursed
I would have to disagree partly with that article Yes typing such as 'leet' is stupidly over the top, but in given circumstances there is nothing wrong with tradtional internet shorthand such as 'tht' 'u' 'r' And as for the typing 'habit' points. I again find this to be total garbage. 99% of posts I make on forums, and messages I send over msn I use internet slang like u etc But my school coursework, letters to relatives, and books that I type are all in perfectly correct english. It is not a matter of habit it is a matter of knowing when it is appropriate. I mean the same goes for speech, would you judge someone because they speak in slang when with friends? they can easily switch to formal english or whatever for adults, bosses and such like I do not think it is all down to habit it is a matter of choice and context. I mean if you look elsewhere on these forums you will find my normal internet slang posts within about five seconds, but as show here and in other serious posts I make, such as giving crit on media disscussion I use full englihs perfectly fine. In my view if you overly judge people by suhc a trival thing as internet slang (this is a generalisation cause extreme cases such as 'leet' I can see) I would say you are too judgmental a person, as that is like judging a book bys its cover. I mean would you think less of a englihs speaking frnehc person because they pronouce it ze instead of the (sterotypical one there but w/e) Would you think less of a person from newcastle for using aii as its part of thier accent? Would you judge people from norfolk for using shew instead of showed? Some of the points picked up by this article are trivial points that are all part of language and its constant evolution and adapatability. I say whats wrong with some light internet slang, as long as its readable whats wrong with plz, ty, np, u, r, tht and such like? Bubsa
Koen, don't get offended man! The difference between you and the people Zon criticises (IMO) is that you're making a strong, conscious effort to type English as well as you can, which is pretty damn good considering it's not your native language! He's not criticising dyslexics, nor foreigners, he's criticising those who have a fine grasp of the language but choose to ignore it in order to look "cool" or to simply just annoy, for example: 1337 speak talkers. Well, that's the impression I got anyway. This is how much you all raised for charity. Thank you.
Nizumal
I have to say that I am one of the few remaining people in the world to use Standard English when typing on the internet or in text messages etc. Yet, I can't help but find that the views expressed in this article were perhaps very one sided. I find myself replying to people that I talk to, especially within runescape, with a very confused "?". I then probably get a similar reply when they can't seem to understand my lack of understanding...so to speak. Yet being an A level English Language student myself I know the value of this new "form" of language. This so called text speak can be seen as a natural progression in our world of busy busy people and an increased limit on what we can say. The author of this very article himself mentioned that he was confined to a word limit and that is one explination for the emergance of this shorthand confusion we all are subjected to. Also, more than 2000 years ago some of the most advanced civilisations, such as the Egyptians, used single symbols to express their language in a written form, perhaps this is the destiantion for our language?.....or maybe not. Nevertheless, I agree the excuse "We're not in an English classroom" is probably not even an excuse at all. That kind of Language would be at home in an English classroom. This new development in language may be an annoying one yet it is important to weigh up all the opinions. As much as I am an advocate for standard grammar and a wide array of lexical choice I think its important to keep an open mind and respect everyones choices and freedoms. So this is my first and hopefully not my last post on the vast tip.it forums and i hope i didn't go on for too long, but for those who read all the way through then thankyou for your time. P.S I apologise in advance for any incorrect spellings :D l8r.
Thunderdog
LONDON, England (Reuters) -- An English essay written by a British teenager in text messaging short-hand has reignited concern among teachers that literacy standards are under threat. The Daily Telegraph newspaper reported Monday that the 13-year-old's teacher could not decipher what the youngster had written. "I could not believe what I was seeing. The page was riddled with hieroglyphics, many of which I simply could not translate," the teacher told the newspaper. The girl's essay began: "My smmr hols wr CWOT. B4, we used 2go2 NY 2C my bro, his GF & thr 3 :- kids FTF. ILNY, it's a gr8 plc." Which in translation from text messaging shorthand would read: "My summer holidays were a complete waste of time. Before, we used to go to New York to see my brother, his girlfriend and their three screaming kids face to face. I love New York. It's a great place." Judith Gillespie, of the Scottish Parent Teacher Council, told the newspaper a decline in grammar and written English was partly linked to the text messaging craze. runemeatball
I am so happy to read stuff like this - it reminds me that there are people that want to enjoy their online time and not have to deal with typing that is often impossible to decipher. Aside from making the person who types in mumbles seem rather ignorant, it is downright annoying. On RS I generally put people that type that way on my ignore list just so i'm not distracted - and many times i've wanted to suggest that until they complete grade school level communication their time would be better spent learning something useful (like spelling) rather than playing something. There are many adults and intelligent teens that play RS and it amazes me that so many people are there rather than learning to communicate - since typing in mumbles tends to indicate they've got a whole lot of learning to do. mara_planter
Years ago we had this discussion about "black English" in the education/linguistic community. If it were designated as its own language, it would achieve a certain status, as would its speakers. If it were designated a dialect of English, it would confer an aura of inferiority on its speakers. This dichotomy is silly. People are very able to learn more than one dialect, as well as more than one language, and to move between the two when the social situation demands it. We do it all the time without even being aware of it. Whatcha got? Howzit goin? Jew gedit? These are socially acceptable non-standard forms of spoken English that we use in the appropriate social context without batting an eye. I suspect that 1337, or whatever it is called as I am new to the teen on-line world (nothing like a pre-teen son to make it relevant to a 48-year-old) developed because of the limited input/output capabilities of chat programs. (I find myself going crazy in chat rooms, not because of the "codes", but because my typing can't keep up with my thoughts.) But the more that 1337 gains the disapproval of the "elders" of the Runescape community, the more it is going to be used by teens as a sign of distinguishing themselves from you. I think that's a shame, because I think they have a lot to learn from us, more than just proper English, which they won't learn if we can't get past this communication issue. I have a 21-year-old daughter who is about to graduate from my state college's honor program, who uses abbreviations appropriately in on-line chat, and standard English in all her schoolwork. I have no problem with my 12-year-old son using it either, and I intend to learn it so I can communicate with his friends and make them feel comfortable. The crime, to me, is in not choosing the dialect that facilitates the communication. If you speak to me in standard English, I will reply in standard English, and if you speak to me in 1337, well, I'll do my best. :D See you all out there on Runescape /\ ~Mara Planter / \ o / \ |= / \ ^ * * * * | | / \ \ | /
crazy4life54
Fantastic article, and very true. As for those of you who think it's a joke, and your typing doesn't matter, and you can type well whenever you need to, well, you're wrong. This past semester at school (sophomore in college) I had a business teacher actually sit our class down and scold us for our email typing. She said that she has never seen such horrible english skills in a class before, and it seems to be getting worse and worse each year. The fact is, you need to be a good typer if you hope to be successful some day. Whether you think so or not, it is a necessity. The internet is the world today, it's how we all communicate. The way you represent yourself, is the way that bosses, teachers, associates, etc. will all look at you. Don't be the dumb guy (or girl). Be the smart one, try your best to type properly all the time, it will definitely come in handy. Such a fantastic article, I had to join the forums just to put in my two cents. "Pupils think orally and write phonetically," she said. and i thought my writing was bad even i had trouble reading that bring back did you know great article though
