February 12, 200620 yr Well written! I couldn't agree more except that i fall into the "type fast to save time" category. I use both hands but i dont look at the screen while typing to check for typos. I have noticed that i can produce a ton of crap in a short amount of time regardless of spelling and punctuation, which is an evolutionary trait i have adapted so as not to miss anything important before I look back up at screen. (if you hadnt guessed, this is one of those instances except i went back and edited since it's a forum post and wont go away in 20 seconds.)
February 12, 200620 yr YES! i hate the constant "u", "y", "r" etc. its only 2 more button resulting in about 2 or less more seconds of work, i mean common. I view people who don't type properly as young and immature mostly, typing does affect how people think about you. Hey, ever noticed that people constantly spell "COME ON" wrong? Seems to be a COMMON mistake.
February 12, 200620 yr Yea you got me, im tired, im barely thinking, think whatever. Pier pressure? I can just see you being threatened by a wharf or jetty because you're a teleporter. Yes, I can see a large wooden wharf uprooting itself from the shore, walking over to you and slapping you in the back of the head for teleporting.

February 12, 200620 yr Good for you, now go celebrate this or something. (if you hadnt guessed, There we go, it should be Hadn't, we all make mistakes. LoL, Good spot. Especially because thats what he's complainin about. There we go also, so please don't try and attack me when you arn't perfect yourself. Pier pressure? February 12, 200620 yr I agree that it is a problem on the Internet now, but it is annoying to type out an entire message into the Runescape the window only to discover that half of the message has been cut off.
February 12, 200620 yr This is a thread about a Tip.it Times article about spelling, and I kind of expected it to become an argument about the posters' spelling and grammar... but that may become a flame war soon! Just keep in mind that we are humans and that we aren't perfect. Everyone makes typos, even me! (not often, but still) I almost fall into the IQ range discussed in the article (low 130's of IQ and not able to type properly because of shorthand writing). I type (almost) perfectly and take the time to correct any major error I can discern within the sentences I write. Which brings me to what I dislike most in RuneScape's chat function: the fact that we can't click inside the chat line to edit text directly, as with any normal user interface element, and the limit on the length of our messages. Sometimes, I agree, we must type fast; for example, if we are in Varrock and must type fast to sell (without using an auto-typer!), I will just move on. But if you are alone with a small group of people and don't talk much (Ice Cave anyone?), you can take the time to correct your messages before htting that Enter key. But please, do not bring up the argument of the Internet not being an English chatroom. This is like having supper, eating it with your fingers and saying, "This isn't a restaurant!" :| (Or not being polite and saying this isn't Japan, or any such nonsense) Well written, Zonorhc, and fully worth the time it took to write it! *gives Zonorhc a gold star of literacy, a golden token of appreciation, and a golden amulet of "I know what you feel :P"*
February 12, 200620 yr Yes! Yes! Yes! Why just five minutes before I saw this article I thought to myself, "Michael, you ought to write an article on how bad grammar on the internet is these days. Simply terrible!" Then I said, "Ah, screw it." But if I had written an article on the subject, mine would of been almost exactly the same as yours. Consequently, it is a good thing that i didn't write in article. You would have sued me for plagiarism! In any case, I agree full-heartedly. "Verily"
February 12, 200620 yr yaaawn, we hear the same stuff over and over... the miniclip=kids aren't changing. It's always the same people try their best at spelling+grammer when writing these things is kinda dork-ish  100% noob since 2001
February 12, 200620 yr It's always the same people try their best at spelling+grammer when writing these things is kinda dork-ish  Yes?
February 12, 200620 yr I agree 100%. Before I learned how to type, I really only used both my pointer fingers and typed in chatespeak all the time, I admit. But then I realized, "Hey, other people type like that and I can't understand a word they're saying, so how can they understand me?" Thus I learned to type. But some chatspeak is ok... even I occasionally say "lol" and when my mom is yelling at me to get off the computer I even sometimes say "g2g". Or if I really have to go to the bathroom I mihgt say "brb"... But then again, I only use those last two on Runescape because there's not enough room to type the complete sentence. Good article, I love all the similies and metaphores... "banshee strapped to a jet engine"... I won't forget that one for a while...
February 12, 200620 yr This is the best TipIt times article I have read. I happen to have dyslexia and tend to switch my letters around sometimes, but for the most part I try to type intelligibly. I also have a pet peeve of spelling correctly. Whenever I see a completely slaughtered spelling of a word, I flip out at whoever typed it. I also play RS at night for the most part, and have to type in the dark. This sometimes causes problems too, but I at least make an effort to spell correctly (I am one of those people who has to look at the keys when they type). Anyway, this was a great times article P.S. Was that a reference to Brave New World with the "Class B semi-morons" part? Becauseif it was, and my memory serves me right (its been a year since I read the book) then I think its Class D semi-morons.
February 12, 200620 yr I agree, but not totaly. Come on, if your trying to say something, and if your like me, you have to cut a few corners to not fall behind. That doesn't explain all of it though, because the rest is, as you say, them being lazy. Typing words with numbersin in (with the exeption of 8, I use that when im trying to buy or sell plate bodys). Other than that, as I hope you can tell, I try to use as much proper english as possible. My doctor says that I have a malformed public-duty gland and a natural deficiency in moral fiber and that I am therefore excused from saving universes. --Life, The Universe and Everything
February 12, 200620 yr I wonder how many times you proof-read that article 8) I understand what you're getting at but I think so long as the intent is to use reasonable English (or any other language) then exact punctuation doesn't matter all that much. For instance when I typed the sentance above I didn't capitalize "english" - would it really of done any harm in that form? However, I'm left wondering why a banshee strapped to a jet engine makes any more noise than a banshee that isn't. Maybe a banshee with a megaphone...
February 12, 200620 yr Thank you Zonorhc for finally saying what I was, almost all of the time, thinking whenever I heard someone speaking shorthand. Now that that article has been written, I can stop my blatant mocking of anywho who refuses to write properly around me. :P "lik zomg tat dud iz lik kewlz"
February 12, 200620 yr Another well written Tip.it times article. I swear these are getting better  De_Pk - Level 117 - Banned September 30th '06.
February 12, 200620 yr Was that a reference to Brave New World with the "Class B semi-morons" part? Becauseif it was, and my memory serves me right (its been a year since I read the book) then I think its Class D semi-morons. I'm glad someone picked up the broad reference. It was originally "Epsilon semi-morons", but that wouldn't have worked so well. Nice spot, though. Thanks for the comments. As I've said before, I enjoyed writing it, and I'm sure oddfaery2 enjoyed editing out the fun parts. :P Varrock Library: Shattered Sky | Silent Thunder | The Emperor's FinestAstri @ MythWeavers
February 12, 200620 yr ill say this again: i would like to say that i disagree with the article as this is the sort of thing that lead to the formation of the english language in the first place> english is a mongrel language and a large proportion has been formed from shortening words from other languages. the use of shorthand on the internet is just a natural evolution of english and you cannot claim to be protecting it by standing against its evolution.it is exactly this sort of shorthand that has made english the greatest, largest and most versitile language on the planet and im all for it increasing its vocabulary!!!!! id also like to say that punctuation was not introduced untill printing was invented so by your standards for being a purist you shouldnt use that at all and we should all go back to using "thys" and such. if you truly believe in english you will encorage itsgrowth instead of standing in the way of every new word and ajustment of it. this is why there is a new dictionary brought out every year. the flexability of the language can only be maintained through constant evolution and change and if you know your history you would know that this sort of thing has been happening for centuarys. Those who try to stop the flow of evolution, in any form, will be washed away in its path!!!!
February 12, 200620 yr Yes... sadly, it is sad how some RuneScapers use their grammar these days, I never hear the end of it on the forums... always hearing, "shut up wbm! stupd nub!" it gets to me sometimes, so what if I type properly and they don't, no reason to be jealous... and I do type somewhat fast at the same time, I'm not trying to brag or anything, but I think I am one of the only people in the game that type with periods... that's a shame.... :? I'm one as well... oh, and commas too, :D
February 12, 200620 yr people shud b able to type how they want reeli and i think u r over reacting a little its not exactly a crime
February 12, 200620 yr I totally agree, but I tend to find it's people around my age (14) that tend to use such pitiful typing. Sadly, most of the game is consumed by people hu tlk liek dis, and say plz every time finish a sentence. We can only hope that people will change like I did.
February 12, 200620 yr lol, great article, its all true. The worst thing though, are the people that try shorthand but dont quite manage it, like the people who cant figure out what sound 'eight' makes, and just type stuff like 'sk8ter'. I say alot of it has come from mobile phones and texting, where shorthand is very useful if you arent a faster texter, but there is absolutely no need for it at the keyboard. people shud b able to type how they want reeli and i think u r over reacting a little its not exactly a crime See that? its just terrible spelling, it looks like terrible spelling and makes me think you cant spell. Its not shorthand at all, you've missed out one letter, and completely changed the rest. Realy would have been better, cos I'd have assumed it to be a typo. (btw, dont point out that ive missed apostrophes and capital letters, because i have. I know it already, and ill admit the internet has made me lazy and got me into bad typing habits. But i try and spell all my words fully. I can definitely agree that these bad habits flow over into my academic work too though :(.)
February 12, 200620 yr Thank you so much for bringing this up. I suffer from short hand myself, minorly though. I'm a "u" "you" switcher, on and off runescape. By the way, for those of u that read my signature, dont ask about the two missing lvls, ill have them up soon enough =-) Current goal status: Money for Full Gunthans.Current money making strategy: Red Cinchompas and Fletching.
