February 13, 200620 yr The problem is maybe that much online gamers just have a other langeu they speak like me and probely thousands of people who just are dutch, german, iyalian or any other langeu you can imagen and just cant speak it.
February 13, 200620 yr i dont do this a lot, i only do it to "u" ""wtf" "Lol" "lmao" "wut" etc..those small harmless words this is really hard to do in another language :)
February 13, 200620 yr I fully agree with you. Runescape used to improve my english (i'm dutch), but now...
February 13, 200620 yr I agree with the author in all points except one. The author assumes that those who write so terribly have a degree of intelligence. If that were true, they would take some pride in the way the communicate instead of proving to the world that they are inbreds. Yes, it is rather disgusting to think that two relatives would choose to have a child together but it must happen quite frequently considering the percentage of runescape players who butcher the english language.
February 13, 200620 yr Edit: To everyone defending 1337 speak and other "internet slang", heere are a few things to think about. (so yeah, I realized I posted today without saying that I indeed think the tip.it article is great, which I already said a few days ago ;) ) Anyways, Jaklumen summoned things up nicely This reminded me of when I put college papers through proofread programs that used MLA (Modern Language Association of America) standards, and in general, reading through MLA handbooks (I have my MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers 4th ed. right here) and similar textbooks. The gist of everything I noted was that published papers should be written to be able to be understood by the widest possible audience, taking into account non-native English speakers, and avoiding terms and shorthand that might be particular to certain media or fields of study. Granted, 'this is the Internet' might well apply for a java game like Runescape, but then, it is a game that many non-English speaking individuals play. In the above quote, the words that really stands out to me are "written to be able to be understood by the widest possible audience, taking into account non-native English speakers, and avoiding terms and shorthand that might be particular to certain media" and that leads to what I want to say: Throughout my life, there are a few guidelines that I find more and more important the older I get, and that is: First learn to do things correct. Once you can do that, you can work on speed. and First learn to do things by the rules. Once you know the rules, you may break them - and fully understand (and take) the consequenses of doing so. This can be applied to a lot of things. The first one is mainly for practical things, typing is an exellent example. Learning to use the keyboard, using all fingers on both hands. Slow as hell and annoying to start with, not to mention that if may even be faster to use only 2 or 3 fingers. But once you learned to touch type and start to get speed up, you would never want to go back to using 2-3 fingers. The time you invested in learning now pays off in quick typing - and it will continue to pay off the rest of your life! Second one I run in to often at work, as I work at a pharmacy (strictly regulated in laws and decrees). Then I come home, and run into it again as I go online - since English isn't my native language (I'm Swedish), and English as all languages has it's words spelled a certain way, and is regualted by grammatic rules. So what is my point you may ask? My point is that the online world is indeed a classroom (Yes, I know someone already said that a few pages back). A classroom where noone really takes the position of being the teacher. Still, we all learn from it, in every subject you may think of - and often without even noticing! When it comes to people like me with another native language than English, one thing we learn how to express ourselves. I am adult and I know myself pretty well. In addition to communicating in English online, I hear music with english text, I watch TV with english talk (and subtitles) and I read novels in English. I *think* I am in a position to take a stand on *what* I want to learn... .... and I want to be able to express myself in English, in a way that everyone knowing the language may understand what I mean. Knowing this, I do my best to use correct grammar and spelling. Not perfect, but I try. When I was *a complete internet newbie :P *, just a few days after I started to play games online I thought "whoa, when u play games u gotta talk different". I consider myself very lucky. I run into a person who in addition to typing very fast also was extreemly good at expressing himself in correct English - in addition to being a good gamer ;) Whew, what a relief when I realized that the 1337 talk/internet slang or whatever you choose to call it, internet community, and gaming were three different things, you could have one without automatically getting the others. ... I know... Does everyone else know... I am sure (well I certainly hope!!) a 16 year old american know when to use internet slang/1337 speak and when to use proper English. Good for you ;) ... but did it ever cross your mind that you have influence on others? Does the 8 year old english boy know that when he does like "everyone else" do, he does it grammatically wrong? (does he know the rules, does he know he is breaking them, and most important - does he know when it matters to use it correctly?) Does the 13 year old belgian girl know? Does she know that it is even more important for her to know (the grammatical rules, the spelling, when and why she may ignore the rules, when to go by the rules). Compared to the kid in the example above, the kid will know how to express himself in English when meeting a person face-to-face as English is his native language.... Do YOU know...? Please think before you ask a question. If you ask the right question, its much more likely you get the answer you are looking for :)
February 13, 200620 yr Nice edition of Tip.it times. I agree with most of what is discussed, typing with proper grammer is just common curtesy, it helps people understand what you are trying to say. I try to type as proper as i can in-game, it gives you a more mature image, but i occasionaly put in a 'u' instead of you or 'coz' instead of because and so on... It's a shame that young people (mainly 10-15) who are still learning how to use their language properly are exposed to such language that we can see in Runescape. Having said all this i've lost count of the number of english essays i've got back at school with a big red circle round 'becoz', 'u' or 'wot'. While on the discussion of grammer, correct spelling etc. Gugge you spelt sentence wrong in your sig  'The' Clan
February 13, 200620 yr When arguing about spelling, be sure to have good spelling yourself. Grammar is spelled with an A. Now, could we (including me, which I will) end this arguing over others' spelling and keep the comments focused on the article? :?
February 14, 200620 yr You were given eight fingers and two thumbs so you could use them all on a keyboard, not so you can be a slob and just use three to ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¦Ã¢â¬Åsave time̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬ÃâÃ
February 14, 200620 yr I have an eleven year old step daughter and it drives me crazy that she has no interest is saying what she means or knowing what words mean. I blame the barage of music and advertizing ... the most I can do for these people is simply say "I don't know whatever language that was ... what are you saying?"
February 14, 200620 yr well, that was a long awaited speech. and might i say, bravo. i may not capitalize my 'i''s and leave out an apostrophy or two but hey, i take the time to actually spell out my words. gj on teh gr8 reprt

February 14, 200620 yr Article is a waste of time. I do agree it doesn't take long to write fully but even I like shortening words from time to time. Writing like that --> 733t looks bloody stupid. But simply shortening words doesn't seem like all that bad a thing at all. I think it's prtty straight forward... if you want to make yourself understood type clearly even if it is in shorthand. If other people can't understand what you're saying then its only your own fault.
February 14, 200620 yr Very well said, I think you hit the nail right on the head... the extra few keys are probably worth not losing the 20 percieved IQ points. Bloody Ace 8)
February 14, 200620 yr That was quite possibly the most truthful article I have read in many months. -It is sad, and I have to watch as seemingly everyone starts speaking in such aggravating styles of English mutilation.
February 14, 200620 yr Well i understand the point but ya forgot to say that there are ppl that cant help it like me! Im word blind and it's hard to type. Or read!! So when i type i make lots of misstakes. I guess this makes me lazy or dumb so be it. But i was hoping that ya would say something about it in the article. :? (ive ya did sry im word blind so i miss things wile reading  ) greetz tiarebabe
February 14, 200620 yr y shud i t4ke tyme out of mi day 2 tipe proply Ya, i guess you guys are right, and i agree with the other guy i don't capitlize i's but i atleast spell right. February 14, 200620 yr I'm afraid that the most disappointing part of this article is that those who would benifit most by reading it are those most likely to ignore it. I also attempt to use proper English when playing online games. I believe that it stems from having actually bothered to roleplay in some games before. Afterall, it's much harder to play a character with an accent and properly mutilate the language with it if you do not utilize the language properly in the first place. Unfortunately, there appears to be little, if any, roleplaying on Runescape. I do tend to use some of the internet slang such as lol, afk, and rofl, as well as using abreviations for things such as mithril (mith) and adamant (addy). I've also found myself using yw or np instead of you're welcome or no problem, on occasion, but most often simply type out welcome as a response to thanks from other players. Then again, I'm older than the majority of the players on Runescape and learned to type quickly while playing MUDs which are the text based predecessors of the currently popular MMORPGs. In any case, I found the article to be entertaining and a point which needs to be driven home amongst player. Unfortunately, it will most likely take a sledgehammer to drive it there.
February 14, 200620 yr tecnecly it dosent matter kids use it 2 act cool or what ever, and personally when it said "the young users are effected" people under 13 arnt aloud to play runescape -.- and if it dose effect them that is what school is for :S :?:
February 14, 200620 yr Unfortunatly that kind of shorthand is encouraged when you have to limit your thought to one line of text. I myself find it incredibly frustrating to try and use proper spelling and grammar, then run out of space halfway though a thought. I do agree that that kind of typing makes me automatically think the person typing is about 8 years old, or or possibly IQ challenged... And hey, WOOT for my first tipit post. :D I've been using this site for months now, and this article just finally made me need to post.
February 14, 200620 yr I completely agree with what that article is saying. I don't understand why kids purposely type that way. I guess they don't realize it just makes them sound ignorant.
February 14, 200620 yr Bravo... Great job on the article. Sad thing is, most of RuneScape's treasured maniac-typers will see the article and decide it's too long for them to read, not being "nerd loosers." :) And meanwhile, "omfg lol look at da nublit wit 2 psots rofl omg !" Edit: But hey, it wouldn't be fair to leave out that I myself used to type like that back when I started using forums and MMOs... :?
February 14, 200620 yr Edit: But hey, it wouldn't be fair to leave out that I myself used to type like that back when I started using forums and MMOs... :? Care to share what made you change your mind on how to type? :) Please think before you ask a question. If you ask the right question, its much more likely you get the answer you are looking for :)
February 15, 200620 yr wow, this guy is full of himself. all i could think of while reading this is that the person who wrote this is just thinks he's better than everyone because he writes in full obnoxoius english. heres some advice, get over yourself. sometimes its good to type in shorthand in a game like runescape because you only get so much room to type in. i really dont think its a crime to use shorthand things like 'u'. its really not a big deal. and as for typos, liek, teh, all that, it just happens. its not destroying the language. do i support people making tons of mistakes and an illegible sentence, no. it really does get annoying, especially when its on forums, or when they have time and space to write normally. but you have to stop judging people and stop thinking you're better than everyone.
February 15, 200620 yr In forums, I agree, people should take the time to make what they are posting readable and typo free, at least to the best of their abilities. In games though, I think shorthand is perfectly acceptable. I myself use it all the time. It's simply a faster way that is usually just as easy to interpret. You have to "fudge up" a sentence pretty well to make it unreadable.
