Returning items of strangers

Leesters

Recommended Posts

I always do it.

I'm trying to set a trend by example. Everytime I see someone fighting Dharok with prayer, I note the persons name. If he lets his prayer run out, he'll probably die. If he dies, I will give his stuff back. Don't respond by saying "You're already rich" or "You're level 118, you don't need death piles" Even if it was a red party hat (which I'm working my wagon off for right now) I'd give it back. Its his. He deserves it back.

If you died and lost stuff you worked for, woudln't YOU want to get the stuff back?

Don't you think your life would be better if you lived by the Golden Rule?

Wouldn't it be cool if EVERYONE did this?

Did you earn anything in his death pile?

Don't you think you'd feel better about yourself if you were a good doobie?

This is my silly post to implore all tip.iters to play by the golden rule, and treat others how you'd like to be treated yourself.

Thank you.

PS. Pkers are evil. :P (flame bait to keep the thread alive. hehe)

A circus in Runescape?? Oh my.

The thing about that is... losing items is the entire point of dieing. Its nice that some people do return items, but it really shouldn't be expected. And I for one probably wouldn't return the items. Thats even considering whether I pick the stuff up, because I wont pick up plain old junk.

The only exception would be for friends. If a friend dies, yeah... I would most definitly get what I could (if not all of it) and see to it that it was returned. Otherwise... anything that hits the floor and becomes visible is fair game to me.

I wouldn't expect anyone to do it for me (unless they were a friend) so I definitly wouldn't do it for anyone else.

And with that said... I don't think I've died and lost anything since my RSC days (at least on the main). So my track record is doing well in that respect.

I think if more people start helping others when they die... they will become too dependent of total strangers, which will only lead to a big disappointment when they get stabbed in the back (and knowing this community, they will). And like I probably said before, it defeats the purpose of dieing.

I usually try to give them their items back when they die. The only exception is when they have pm set to friends , or when they're just a complete jerk.

Of course, whenever I die I usually don't recieve my items back (Not that I'm surprised, though). The only time I heard from someone after I died was when the person was nice enough to pm me with a friendly "hahahahaha u died" :roll:

If somebody dies from their own stupidity then they deserve to lose their items. If somebody dies from taking uneccessary risks then they also deserve to lose their items.

That being said I ALWAYS* return people's items if I get the opportunity. Most of the time they deserve to lose their items because of their own stupidity/risky behavior but occasionally lag or other things "unfairly" part them from their belongings. I have returned well over 10mil in items and gp (half of that was when I hadn't even hit the 1mil mark myself) and will continue to do so because of the reasons that you stated above.

*The only exception is if they are being a jerk to me or others. If that is the case I keep the items or give them to the jerk's victims, if applicable. I once gave 6k steel arrows and a glory to a lvl 28 who was being called a "noob" for no reason other than his combat lvl.

PM me in game to use some skills of mine (glories/potions) free or to ask a question.

I always return items if the guy didnt give me a reason not to like being a jerk.

I am a pker, this has nothing to do with pking, if they were in the wildy they knew the risks but if some one teleports out of kq for example and dies by poisen if i catch there name i will return the items.

So far i have returned a whip, gunthans spear , robin hood hat and ranger boots and 38k mith arrows as well as a lot of rune, and i dont even feel tempted to take the items.

I would give back their items if they either asked for back or if I would notice their name. If they dont ask I can't really give them their stuff back because I'm usually the one lulling my way around talking to friends and usually not paying enough attention to catch ones name. (Unless they type "AHH! Dharok's killing me!!!") Also I dont feel too quilty picking up items of which people dropped and I happen to wander up to them. I usually take what I want and tell the next person I see there's a dp somewhere around.

I also feel it is no ones responibility but their own if they do die because that is part of the risk involved with something "dangerous" like barrows. Lag should always be expected even if you don't always encounter it. I myself have died twice because of lagging while softening up dharok. Only response I've got was "Haha, free 2m for me!" Which was annoying but w/e still something I expect. (Which is also why I'm never surprised or let down when someone posts about the "cabbage" community, I expect it. If you expect the least, you'll never be let down.) :wink:

If everyone followed your rule, what would become of p'king?

Not that it's already so great. *Looks at your sig* :roll:

Owned 8)

If you die pking then the pker has deserved the item, but picking up a strangers item wouldn't show any skill in obtaining it.

Sure, it would be great if everyone abided by the "golden rule" but it's not going to happen - ever. People will continue on looting items responding with, "but I wouldn't get that stuff back if it were me."

I myself attempt to get items back IF the person died unfairly from lag or some bs hitting etc. However I won't return party hats or anything of rare value, I'm not going to lie here, I know I wouldn't.

I like your wishes Leesters, but unfortunetly this won't happen :cry: Instead, Jagex should maybe allow more items to be protected OUTSIDE of the wilderness. 3 items atm is just too unfair, especially with highly possible lagging issues in dangerous places.

Well, that's my 2 cents :P

Yep, I definatly agree with what elucin said. I might give back some of the stuff but I would keep the more expensive stuff. For instance, one day I was killing the guys below karamja for obsidian capes and stuff. I got bored after like an hour at the same spot, so I go to an other spot. On the way I see a pile of rock-shell legs, ammy of glory, obsidian cape, and the other misc stuff that most people train with. later on he comes by and asks if he can have the rockshell legs back. So I just give them back to him because I know that I made another 700k (this was back when obs capes were 600k*. So I really doubt that if anyone died and lost anything of great value that I would give it back.

Yes I wish people would do this more often, but I don't believe this will ever happen because there are people out there that ruin this world and everything in it. I would not expect anything back, nor should another person who lost items aswell.

As for me, I've died a couple times and it always sets me back (because no one returns my stuff) and I know its not fun.

On the other hand....

I've seen people die and picked up over 4m in one drop. Why anyone would have a rare like a mask in their inventory while fighting just boggles my mind and I really didnt feel too bad about not returning that stuff. (Dont be stupid)

My opinion is that we should all try to be nice and that one person is all it takes, but dont be expectant of it.

:roll: code of moral and principles serve no purpose in a game. if you had an advantage, use it.

the whole pray and teleport thing are so stupid when it comes to wildy.

mainly how you look at it, if your the agressor its seemed to be a "frowned" upon act, now if your the person getting attacked(not skull killin green's, doin clue, exploring) and your not out to kill anyone who cares.

ive been attacked so many times in the wildy while training agility kbd clue mage arena all that stuff. and it never pays off for the pker.

ive never not returned items when asked to or when its been someone ive been chatting with so ive been able to contact them.

but i must say there have been times that ive been hoping a certain person would die not because i want their things but because they are a total jerk.

in such a case i would have no guilt in taking anything they had.

I usually go with the 50-50 split, if I catch their names that is.

The point of dying is losing stuff, otherwise the game would be way to easy. You can see this by people training on white knights in Falador castle without any food. The moment they respawn they re-equip their 3 items and continue fighting.

The point of being a nice person is giving back stuff that people have lost. I know what most items are worth and know what amount of time and effort it takes to make the money to get those items, so giving them back makes their day a lot better.

So by giving back half their items I usually make them quite happy since they will only need to spend half the amount of time making money and by keeping half the items I make myself a little happier and the dead person knows he will have to be more carefull next time. And the choice of which items I return is of course completely mine :)

It really depends on the person and situation for what I would do..

If the person wasn't rude and just made a stupid mistake due to ignorance (e.g. I saw somebody die with 35k bronze arrows at iron dragons because they didn't think they'd need an antifire shield), I'll try to give their stuff back... of course sometimes you're not expecting it, so you don't catch the name :(

However, there've been other times where somebody was rude or arrogant and their attitude alone is why I don't return their items. I had somebody in full guthix come to kill troll generals and apparently thought the one I was repetitively killing was the only option, and the unoccupied ones weren't good enough for him... when he forgot to pray and dropped guthix kite and helm, I didn't even think about giving it back.

~~~
It is reassuring to see people who generally return items though. I saw a pure thieving farmers in draynor, and when he got a watchman people tried to lock him in and make him lose his yellow phat (how lame!). Anyway, luckily for him, a good friend of mine was the one who picked up the yellow and returned it to the kid... you can't even begin to imagine how grateful this person was.
I normally give stuff back regardless of how much they cost.
I was at Aberrant Spectres once, had just logged in actually, when a very well know person on these boards comes by and says he just lost drag med and whip there on his way to abby demons, he went on and on at how i was lying at that i must've picked them up, when infact i had just logged in and hadnt picked them up at all. He even offered to buy them off me and really wouldnt believe that i hadnt got any of his items when he had died :?
I've never been lucky enough to find huge amounts of expensive items (I wouldn't give them back, ec^pt for friends of course), but I always return (pick)axe heads.
