I don't keep up with what's best and all that, but I'm assuming Dragon Throwing Knives are going to already be far outclassed by what we already have?

Probably, if we follow the pattern of pretty much all previous dragon items. Jagex took such a long time releasing them that they were eventually nowhere near the best gear (as they were in the early days), yet probably because for lore related reasons (dragon items are still significant in the game's mythos), they are still releasing them slowly, through high level avenues.

Which wouldn't be so bad if they at least kept the requirements consistent. I mean, compare way you get the longsword to the way you get the hammers and the claws.

The only way I can see them making dragon weapons worth while, without making their special attacks OP, would be to allow players to upgrade them, like the "soul weapons" they were talking about in inventor.

Some kind of upgrade to get them to t80-95, while being untradable, and lost on death. Some kind of upgrade that would take a moderately long time to get, that can't be ground, and is more of a D&D that happens while you use it.

Obviously, items from drops and not store bought wouldn't be as powerful, making them super valuable.

Why is it a bad thing that dragon weapons are useless for high level players? They require 60 attack. You have 99 attack. You should barely even know they exist.

People don't like the spread of difficulty for obtaining dragon items. Look at long/dagger/scimitar vs the rare drop from difficult monsters...

Yeah the only issue with dragon is the rather ridiculous things they crop up as 'rewards' for - fair enough the ones pre-eoc like claws are a bit wtf now, but they are where they are due to different times. But when new ones arrive with high-end content its like really?

I mean no-one who NEEDS dragon items is gonna be able to kill Chaos Giants for example, but conversely their 'special' drop being so pants means no-one who CAN kill them really will.

I kinda feel like basically all the dragon items from higher level mobs and quests should be ripped out and given to like the chromatic dragons or demons and hellhounds then work out wtf can be used to replace them in drop tables etc that makes more sense for the levels opposed to artificially inflating values through upgrades (chaotic claws and ascensions)

A bit of a curveball idea of the 'item collector' could be:

There are a few more 'bits' to buy like a coin hoover and such, but then the actual 'item collector' could be a slayer hlem esque construct - eg you can put in herbicide, seedicide, bonecrusher, charming imp, gem bag, coal bag, maybe even prayer urns and it'd be a composite of their functions.

also, the ghostcrusher

my main complaint about dragon items is that when they started out, they were too expensive for a tier that nobody was going to stay at for very long, while barrows gear outclassed it in several ways while being more affordable overall

since they were all devalued by time and circumstance, that part's not really true anymore, but dragon items in general have fallen out of favor long before they managed to get the rest of them released

I disagree. Back around 2006-2008, barrows items were a lot better, yes, but dragon items were far more affordable and more powerful.

Armor, yes. Barrows hands down beat dragon because it wasn't so crazy rare.

Weapons, no. Before the whip, d scimmy, long, and dagger were the best and most used. Whip came out, and they were still a good second.

Barrows weapons were only used by people with the set. Guthans, veracs, and dharoks. The rest weren't generally used. Karils was the best in game, but also the most costly, seconded by crystal bow or msb. Ahrims... well.... And torags was cheap and decent.

Dragon weapons each had a very unique use. This added depth and variety in a way which eoc does not bring. Tierscape wasnt there, the system wasn't overly perfect. Any weapon could have had its use in the right places. Just like the Zamorak spear at Corp. Outside its a bit meh

That's no excuse for putting a hard requirement of 85 strength in front of t60 hammers, though.

Reinforcing that content worthwhile for higher leveled players while providing content for mid levels?

...Hard requirement in the sense that you can't wield the t60 weapon without 85 strength. Mid-levels simply can't use it.

Birthright of the Dwarves was a very [bleep]ed up quest

Sorry I wasn't aware that you had to finish the quest to use.

It actually is fine design, as long as the rate of earning those medium gear isn't so rare that it becomes expensive. It is a good way to create content for high lvls if the stuff you earn can feed the people below you. It just doesn't work well if you don't get new players.

The point is you need to have completed the quest to use the t60 weapons, aka must have 85 strength to use them.

This type of stuff usually doesn't work. In order for something to be worthwhile for high levels it has to be fairly profitable - it has to have more worth than level 60's can afford. So either you get items targeted for people with level 60 stats that are too expensive and they can't realistically access them until much higher levels, or you get stuff that level 60's can afford, but isn't worth camping for by higher levels.

  • 2 weeks later...

Did they not patch the BotD dragon drops to be wieldable by anyone a week or two after the update when they retweaked the drop tables?

Which kinda renders a large example portion of this line of debate void.
