Aquarium – Player-Owned House Update

Featured Replies

In my opinion Boss Monster Pets was an update that in mud development was completely altered and changed to give Completionists something to do and to stretch content

My main point is that content in development is given an amount of time and focus as to how the content affects them disproportional to the amount of completionists.

It is a gray area discussion, not black or white one.

And Arceus, Livid Farm wasn't. That is just a horrible little piece on content that should've never made in the first place. And adding it to Comp Cape was just mean.

How is boss pets anything to do with compers?

It has no comp requirement attached.

No boss is locked behind maxed-stat level barriers.

Are compers, in general, a group that overlaps a lot with pvmers? Sure, but that doesn't make a pvm update a comper update.

Maybe JMods should try playing the game a little more on their own outside of work. And no, that doesn't including parading around with your fanclub on your choob, the name of which is usually that JMod's best-kept secret. Generate some med-level character for them to play at home, and maybe they'll understand a little better.

Quite a few JMods do have accounts that they do play on outside of work; in fact, quite a few of them are maxed, like Reach's (rip) and Rowley's. There was even a JMod account that was constantly being named in the top 15 updates on the 200m all skills thread a while back.

Sorry, I was mistaken. Confusing the titles for pets. I'm a bit busy and didn't sleep well last night.

I would point out that essentially all new content has some form of completionist requirement. So every piece of content requires too much attention for a small amount of people. This is of course my opinion. I do find it tiresome that compers complain about bad content not because it is bad, but because they feel forced to play bad content to maintain their prestige piece.

Back after a 5 year TIF hiatus. Please don't mind me too much.

But again you are assuming there that compers are only in it for themselves.

If I complain about content being bad it is because it is bad content and should be better, it has nothing to do with keeping my comp cape.

I mean sure it being bad does impact on my play experience whilst maintaining the cape, but it also impacts upon anyone playing the content at any stage of the game.

Why should I feel unable to have valid negative concerns about the quality of content or have those concerns written off as being all about being a comper?

Sure my own personal interest in content may be in part or entirely to do with playing it to garner the requirement, and potentially no more if it is low level or not fun, but that does not automatically mean I cannot have an objective view point about the quality of content for the playerbase as a whole.

Also having a comp req does not make content about compers. Having a comp req is pretty standard because its a cape for completing everything - it's not about giving them content its pure and simple logistics that a cape for completing everything must gain a requirement to complete the new thing. It's not about skewing development to focus on compers or making content specifically for them it is pure and simple basic logic of thing can be completed therefore cape for completing all things will require it. Heck they've even said in many podcasts etc comp reqs are basically the last thing they do in dev - they make the content then look back at it and go 'does this qualify as completing something, if yes throw in a line of code to add comp req'

Again, not about content being comp centric. Point is too much effort worrying about a very minor group of people.

Second point was that they don't care about the content being bad. They care about being forced to play it. If it's bad and no requirement, they care not if it's bad. Yes, you can have a selfish interest. I'm tired of hearing it and I'm tired of time and attention being catered to, in the grand scheme of things, something of very minor significance.

Edit: I'll make myself plain: I'm sick of compers. I'm sick of discussions about comp requirements, I'm sick of content only being talked about how it relates to compers. I'm sick of the whole affair.

Now I'll freely admit that is just me. It's my opinion and my feelings. I don't care to discuss it because I don't want to. I don't like to hear about it. I don't fault compers for their opinions and their interests. I get it. I might feel the same in their position. Simply put, every time I see it, I sigh and skip over it if I can.

...That might actually explain why so many recent comp requirements have felt like they were tacked on at the last minute :v

Still, I think what she's trying to get at is that there are features that are pretty clearly aimed at the prestige crowd; but she's missing the fact that a lot of that same group hates it because it's usually pretty pointless and grindy, and a lot of the time there's other stuff to make up for it for everyone that can access it. That's mostly the problem in this update, for example: there's really not much reason for fish eggs to be so rare, and it's a problem because the core of the update is collecting fish eggs. Compare it to something like Elder Chronicles, which aren't a requirement for people that want to make use of elder energy products.

Still, a lot of them feel kind of pointless. I get that the point of the cape is to show that you've done everything, but there is quite a lot of content that the average player is really only going to touch because it's a comp requirement, rather than out of any merit of its own. Which kind of suggests that it's less about comp requirements and more about padding and life support as a major part of the current update system.

Alg, the point isn't lost on me. The whole affair just makes me roll my eyes. And Jagex not make content grindy and repetitive? Pish posh Sir!

Back after a 5 year TIF hiatus. Please don't mind me too much.

I just don't follow the logic of how its some how all about compers though.

By the logic presented it seems as though the mere fact this content has a comp req and people have found it bad makes it all about compers and too much focus being given to them.

But if it had no comp req and the same complaints were made it wouldn't be an issue at all.

Just seems like a ridiculous logic since in both cases the content is being complained about because it is bad content, just in the case of a comp req existing those complaints are being marginalised or invalidated some how.

Me behave? Seriously? As a child I saw Tarzan almost naked, Cinderella arrived home from a party after midnight, Pinocchio told lies, Aladin was a thief, Batman drove over 200 miles an hour, Snow White lived in a house with seven men, Popeye smoked a pipe and had tattoos, Pac man ran around to digital music while eating pills that enhanced his performance, and Shaggy and Scooby were mystery solving hippies who always had the munchies. The fault is not mine! if you had this childhood and loved it put this in your signature!

That is true, but let's be real, that isn't the primary reason. It's for the status. :)

...No I'm pretty sure I want that cape for its dank ass stats and features. I don't give a [bleep] what a little tryhard thinks of me.

Assuming everyone wants it because of lolprestige is just poorly reasoned.

In case that means me, I'm at nottryingatall. Sure some people enjoy the stats, but come on, who are we trying to fool here? The cape, especially trimmed, is a show piece, as are all of the Capes of Distinction. This one requires a lot more work

And it isn't poor reasoning, it's my experience with the people who have and want them. Perhaps TIF has a better class of players, but in the live game, all my experiences point have led me to my opinion.

Kimberly you are the exception, not the rule. IMO of course.

It's probably the best show piece ever, then, because it does everything that every other cape does. There's such a huge gap between it and the max cape that it's not even funny.

Why would anyone in their right mind chase it just for slightly improved stats and a few convenience teleports though? Despite it being the best in game, it's just the cape slot - not the platebody or something. It seems to me that anyone going for it is either wearing it for show/bragging rights, or enjoys the challenge of a moving goalpost and keeping up with/completing new content.

Yes yes I know. I don't want to discuss it anymore honestly because there's nothing more to discuss. Different experiences, different thoughts, different opinions, etc etc.

It's a very nice cape. The aquarium is a poor piece of content that flew in the face of their stated intent of grinding and shallow content. Thank god all I do anymore is hang around the f2p GE and harass the trust traders and money doublers.

I got the comp cape in 2012 so I could use it for Nexing.

It had an incredible boost to melee attack that made your claw specs much, much more accurate, and saved you having to carry both a helm/cape switch for your specs.

It had the accumulator effect so you wouldn't have to pick up your very expensive ruby/diamond bolts.

It had a bigger ranged attack boost than the max cape or accumulator, which of course improved your damage output.

It had a bigger magic defence boost than the max cape or accumulator, which meant you spent less time as the main tank and so could contribute more to a kill.

It had an escape teleport as a right click option, so you got to save another space which would otherwise be used on a tablet. And it dropped you right next to an altar.

The same went for pretty much any other form of PvE pre-EoC. Comp cape's accuracy and defence boosts to every stat blew every other cape slot item out of the water. It was precisely because it was a cape slot item that it was so useful.

It's a badass cape I'll admit.

For a lot of the older comp'ers (pre-EoC), me included, the main reason we went for completionist cape was for the stats. Gywn already covered most of the things, but back when most bosses required teams to kill, it was not uncommon to have completionist cape requirements to join teams. If you managed to get on a team without a comp cape, your lower defense meant you would get wrecked a lot faster, especially at Nex. The +10 attack +15 defense +8 strength bonus was ridiculously powerful compared to any other cape in the game.

Aside from that, this was when steel titan was incredibly OP, and one other benefit of completionist cape that is somewhat forgotten today is that it allowed you to incorporate the spirit cape into the comp cape, which was a massive benefit almost everywhere.

Remember a while back when a Jmod randomly played Sheep Shearer on Twitch and nearly lost his mind? It was so spectacular it almost gave me a sexual thrill. They really need to play their own game more on regular accounts.

I also really wish they'd realize that being on the forefront of technology is risky and a huge resource drain and they're hardly big enough to make it work. But nitpicking...
