I suppose that, at least for Canada, US standard and Ebonics would make sense. I think accent plays a part of it. You recognize that someone with a different accent speaks a different dialect, and instead absorb phraseology from other people who speak your language in the same accent that you do. I also had to laugh at their example. Even before I finished reading that paragraph, I was thinking "that sounds like something they would say in Newfoundland". In case it's not always the same, it was "throw me down the stairs my shoes", which doesn't sound entirely incorrect to me. It's just such a beautiful and convoluted way of saying something so simple. We call it Newfinese. They have some great sayings, but I can't use them because no one where I live knows what they mean. I'm from New Zealand (which I'm sure New Zealandish isn't even a word) and our English is British English. Although because of television and movies, a lot of American English has crept in.
