chenw
Ever wondered why Karil's Crossbow was so unique that it needed its own ammunition? Ever wondered why Ai-Hakuna, NPC in Port Phasmatys, who is from the east, has access to Bolt Racks? Ever wondered why Karil was mysterious, according to the Crumbled Tome? I may be able to shed some light on it, as I highly suspect that Karil's Crossbow is indeed a very unique Weapon. I will start by explaining the basis of Karil's Crossbow. His crossbow firstly has a magazine. There is indeed 1 crossbow that had a magazine, and it was from the East (namely China), and it's called Chu-Ko-Nu. Chu-Ko-Nu is (to the best of my knowledge) one of the world's first weapons to possess a Rapid fire mechanism. The crossbow does not look to dissimilar to the European version of the crossbow, though it does have 2 differences : A magazine and ABSENCE of a trigger. The reason for this is that a magazine will reduce the amount of time dedicated to reloading. European Crossbows, although stronger than Chu-Ko-Nu, suffers from slow reloading rate. The magazine is able to hold multiple bolts, and the top bolts will drop down onto the firing barrel when a bolt is fired (very similar to gun magazines, except that the ammo push up). This allows Chu-ko-nu to be ready to fire again at moment's notice. The lack of a trigger is a special property of chu-ko-nu that gave its rapid fire. All the archer have to do is pull back the bow string, the bolt will then drop onto the shaft, and let go of the string, and the bolt is fired. The rate of fire is dependent on the speed which you do the pull and release, and is very much faster than a bow or a crossbow would ever dream of. It does have a limitation however that it had shorter range and power compared to the European Crossbow, as the rapid fire puts on a lot of strain on the archer. Bolt racks will speed up the reloading times, as it acts like reloading a magazine on a gun. And since Ai Hakuna is from the East, it would not be difficult for him to obtain bolt racks Now, Karil's Crossbow has Chu-Ko-Nu as a basis, thats why it fires fast. However it also has a trigger mechanism, and I believe this is somewhat ingenious (I wonder why it was never made). If you put a trigger mechanism on the Chu-ko-nu, you can potentially increase its power as the user will not be pulling the bowstring very often, hence they can pull the string back further. Now what has a long range, a magazine and pretty fast barrel reload mechanism? A Sniper rifle. Karil's Crossbow maybe a primitive version of the Sniper rifle, as the trigger mechanism allows accurate and powerful shots to be fired, while the magazine keeps its firing up. This also may explain why, according to the tome, that one of the brothers was feared, since there was no such thing as a hidden sniper (it is very hard to snipe a lot of people with a bow, or a conventional crossbow on your own), and the accuracy and power of the shots of Karil's special crossbow, coupled with Karil's skills (we all know his power :P), makes him pretty nasty... chenw
when i became a member, the most perculiar thing a found was a eastern trader seeling a unique ammunition is a WESTERN world, hence my suspicions about jagex having done a little research on weapons... It would definitely boring, from both my and jagex point of view if all the weapons were either swords, longs, etc. Even Scimitar isnt a european weapon 6,924th to 30 hunting, 13,394th to 30 summoning, 52,993rd to 30 DivinationKiln Record (Post-EoC): W 25 - L 0, 14 Uncut Onyx, 8 Jad hits received (Best record: Two in the same kiln)Obby set renewed post update #2: 0QBD drops: 21 crossbow parts, 3 Visages, 1 Kites, 2 KitsMax Port Score [2205] Achieved: 27th April 2013 (World 2nd) Farmyard Rampage ranking: 12th, 50,000 Kills. chenw
nice offf topic: where can you get bolt racks besides barrows(general stores, NPCs ext.)? Ai Hakuna in Port Phasmatys. The last time i check he still sold it. If you did the ghost ahoy quest, he is the guy you get a translation manual in return for a autographed oak longbow. 6,924th to 30 hunting, 13,394th to 30 summoning, 52,993rd to 30 DivinationKiln Record (Post-EoC): W 25 - L 0, 14 Uncut Onyx, 8 Jad hits received (Best record: Two in the same kiln)Obby set renewed post update #2: 0QBD drops: 21 crossbow parts, 3 Visages, 1 Kites, 2 KitsMax Port Score [2205] Achieved: 27th April 2013 (World 2nd) Farmyard Rampage ranking: 12th, 50,000 Kills. SAGE
Cool facts but I think you are thinking too hard... JAGEX isn't that hardworking in reseaching this! *Sigh* The content team at Jagex are probably the best out of the bunch in the office. They work very hard on our updates and tie them to small interesting things which they will base the surrounding components on. Think before posting? As for the topic this was extremely interesting and proved to me yet again Runescape has some great ability in actually learning something while playing if you have the time to look behind the game. chenw
thats chu-ko-nu right there, it does look simple, and yet it works well (and unique) deserves credit. Like i said, all you have to do is load the rack, pull string back, release it and the bolt is gone (no need to pull string, load bolt, aim, fire like crossbows :P) 6,924th to 30 hunting, 13,394th to 30 summoning, 52,993rd to 30 DivinationKiln Record (Post-EoC): W 25 - L 0, 14 Uncut Onyx, 8 Jad hits received (Best record: Two in the same kiln)Obby set renewed post update #2: 0QBD drops: 21 crossbow parts, 3 Visages, 1 Kites, 2 KitsMax Port Score [2205] Achieved: 27th April 2013 (World 2nd) Farmyard Rampage ranking: 12th, 50,000 Kills. Golvellius
Karil's is an interesting design. Its still my favorite looking of the bunch. Too bad they didn't spend more time on thinking of how to make it useful for players. Exclusive Legacy Mode Player He just successfully trolled you with "courtesy" and managed to get a reaction out of you. andydageeza123
no offence mate, but i agree with yurpsie, because i doubt they look this far in. if i remember correctly, in age of empires 2, when you build a castle as the chinese you can make soldiers called chu-ko-nu's, and they wield crossbows. what probably happened was a jagex staff member goes, whilst playing aoe2, "hey doesnt karil have an x-bow?" "yeh he does" "wow these chinese guys have an x-bow, lets make a chinese guy who sells bolt racks!" and thus, it was all born :D . gotta say though, nice research, pretty impressive p.s. scimitars are widely known, i doubt jagex researched them. also to hypnotic monkey, you say its educational, but only when someone comes along and explains this all. I doubt many people here wouldve thought twice about any of this, so please explain how runescape taught us about chu-ko-nu's? My first ever sig wewt! (worst face ftw?)Wish me luck with the fire cape ;)
FuBai
Now what has a long range, a magazine and pretty fast barrel reload mechanism? a longbow...well it doesn't have a magazine but it does have the rest much, much more powerful - punches straight through plate-mail armor (i've seen it being demoed). (this is than the ch-ko-nu btw, not the european crossbow) Much, much further reach - the cho-ko-nu crossbow was very short ranged And very fast - a good archer (it was a legal requiremnt that all men of able body over the age of 14 trained for 2 or 3 hours every sunday at the archery buts in England, so they were quite good) could fire around 18 arrows a minitue. Yet they are so rubbish in the game! Why?!

chenw
I didnt exactly waste my time researching, it just came to my mind that how much Jagex MAY have gone through to get the different variety of weapons, since I was farmiliar with the concept of Chu-Ko-Nu's anyway. Who knows what new weapons jagex will come up with this time? 6,924th to 30 hunting, 13,394th to 30 summoning, 52,993rd to 30 DivinationKiln Record (Post-EoC): W 25 - L 0, 14 Uncut Onyx, 8 Jad hits received (Best record: Two in the same kiln)Obby set renewed post update #2: 0QBD drops: 21 crossbow parts, 3 Visages, 1 Kites, 2 KitsMax Port Score [2205] Achieved: 27th April 2013 (World 2nd) Farmyard Rampage ranking: 12th, 50,000 Kills.
