Thieving - Immoral?

Featured Replies

Sure, it's kind of immoral... but RuneScape makes it look easy. You have to be profession to do this flawlessly. Some kid is gonna try to pickpocket someone and grab them in butt. BAM! Sexual harassment lawsuit. Now after that, do you think that kid would ever try to steal again?

LMAO!!! I laughed in rl

If you cant steal in real life, not why steal in RS. You wont get in trouble...

Games are here for things we cant do in real life. We cant go back in World War II and kick Nazi ***. We cant be a wizard and do cool things. We cant command and entire country and wage war. Thats why games are for.

Congratulations on being a fool, RuneScape is not supposed to represent real life .... oh look a dragon just flew past by window, i'll be ok though, i have my orange shield ... Idiot! :wall:

It's not just that, it's the fact that thieving is WRONG. Why should it be in RuneScape?
A GAME. YOU'RE A MORON. A GAME. NOT REAL. A GAME. Jesus, I hate [developmentally delayed]s like you.

So, killing defenseless men, women, unarmed cows, people in the wilderness, and cooking fish isn't immoral, yet 'Thieving' is.

^ Do you see the parallel there?

If you don't like it don't do it.

...Alright, the Elf City update lured me back to RS over a year ago.

Ever since I started RuneScape, I've always thought the thieving skill was immoral.

Thieving is stealing. Stealing is wrong.

Yes, stealing, pickpocket, etc, might have been a big part of the middle ages, but do we really need a skill out of it? What does it teach younger players? Now, I'm not saying we should remove the skill, it's been in there since RSC and would have too much of an impact.

Perhaps we could at least rename it? "Stealth" for breaking ancient locks... for non-malicious tasks (Legends Quest, Desert Treasure). And maybe make it so when you get the random event watchman while theiving (which would then NOT give xp), you are blacked out with his mace, sent to jail, and must use stealth to pick the lock, and either sneak past or kill the watchman to get out. The above paragraph's probably a bad idea... but the main thing is... does anyone else think the same about Thieving in RuneScpae being immoral?

What are you, nine?

I'm sorry, but if a game can impact your morals, then you shouldn't be playing. End of story. Besides...changing the name of the skill won't change what the skill actually IS...so your idea is faulty.

Plus, if we nix this, we may as well nix the following:

Combat. Killing is violence? Violence is bad?

Blood on walls of dungeons. Blood means violence? Violence is bad?

Zamorak. Evil is bad?

All food eaten in one bite. Obesity is bad?

I mean...god. If you're so "pure and moral" and really feel that your willpower could be pvertaken by a GAME, then maybe you should stop playing....and possibly see a psychiatrist.

I'd suggest reading my Pixel rant which is linked in my signature. It more clearly explains the role of morality in Runescape.

Thieving in RS is not immoral.

What does it teach younger players?

your supposed to be 13 or older to play runescape so itsnt that breaking rules right then and there?

Computers will never be above humans because we made them.

That's what monkeys used to say about us.

You forgot to mention that runescape also teaches kids to talk to mysterious old men...

sigsn9.jpg
well killing people is wrong isnt it? but they're lvl 2 and just so fun to stab in the stomach or slice and dice right down the center isnt it. but i dont think a 11 year old kid is gunna run down his neighborhood with a samurai sword and start killing all in sight.

 :anxious: WOW...a new samurai sword!!! Stats Plox!!! ATT requirements plox!!!

but seriously:

IT IS A GAME

There's tons of "immoral" stuff both in RS and other games (s.o. mentioned GTA...) and I don't think the vast majority of the overall gaming community takes them as an example in real life!

and kill strangers...

(Quit: tallest please come to the death altar, give me 1,337,000,000 gp, a golden tinderbox, and a spade, also steal one of zidanes phats and give it to me.

If a man steals bread to feed his starving family, is that wrong?

No.

Well what if his family doesn't like bread, they like silk, gems, silver, etc?

And what if instead of giving these stolen goods away, he sold them at a

price that was practically giving them away? Is that wrong?

No.

Unfortnuately, not everyone is as mature as we hope to be. Yes, there are some people who will play this game and think, "Hey, lets try that!". But those types of people are the ones who should be monitored on the internet. And that is at the parent's discretion, not ours. If the parents don't like the theiving/killing/etc aspect of this game, then it is their duty as a parent to forbid their child from playing that game until they're able to handle it. That doesn't happen often in this day and age though, but are jagex programmers and the countless thousands that understand that this is just a game at fault? Not in the least.

Personally I don't apply morals to a web-based game unless I'm interacting with other people.

EDIT:

It's not just that, it's the fact that thieving is WRONG. Why should it be in RuneScape?

There is nothing wrong with provoking thoughtful conversation. Responses like that spoil the forums when us "morons" try to talk civilly.

What you think sushi is morally right??

less randomly: if people are so weak minded as to take things they see in a game literally then they shouldn't be allowed out of their straight jacket. And while you're at it make sure they don't watch the TV, or listen to any politicians either.

Remember your country code, and SHUT THE GATES!

Is it wrong when I play Grand Theft Auto and land a helicopter on top of a building, and then shoot poor unsuspecting pixels in the head with a high powered rifle? And is it wrong when I turn the paramedics into a pile of burnt flesh and bones when they come to resuscitate my victims?

No ...

And do you know why? I'm pretty sure you do, about 20 other people have already said it.

My greatest ambition is to kill every member of the human race.

GUYS CHILL OUT ITS ONLY A GAME, for gods sake we are not GreenPeace and we dont care :? This is just a bloody game and we play it for fun ... JEESUS !

Edit: ANd also to add insult to injury, people are ssaying this is moral and this isnt, only the law can say what is moral and not, and please stop comparing runescape to GTA, gta has real stuff that is out there in the shops right now (machine guns, pistols, snipe rifles etc. ,,) while runescape has swords etc. now tell me how easy is it to get a sword and go killing people these days.

I wouldn't mind thieving being in RuneScape, I just don't think it should be an entire skill... e.g. something you SHOULD do and get BETTER at... which you shouldn't. If it isn't a skill, I don't have to do it.

If your so weak in the mind that runescape, of all games influences you.. Then all I have to say is you shouldn't be playing games in the first place.

no, i dont think its ridiculous, its one of those them arguments that can be debated and debated and debated for generations and i can assure u that this thread will not come to a conclusion about theiving being immoral.
