I'm Wondering, Why are There Censors?

WHY are their censors? Why do you think? The censors are there to filter out what grown-ups think are bad for the youth. It does NOT matter whether or not you're 13+, 18+, or 21+, they will filter it because they think it's bad.

 

 

 

I mean, you don't want some 13 year old in the library reciting all the 'new words' he learned on a game to the librarians or his parents, do you?

Runescape is supposedly for people aged 13 plus, these people are still under parental responsibilty and if jagex has labeled the game as 13+ they have to do their best to ensure the content of the game fits that age group of they could get in trouble by law.

 

 

 

Censoring phone, email etc is to protect their customers, sexual predators are known to go to roleplaying games to find their victims, censoring these common forms of communication outside of game gives the children some protection.

 

 

 

I think Friz is fairly spot on here. Most of this has to do with COPPA and similar laws. I'm sure that www. and any censor evasions there have been filtered to avoid players checking out a URL that may give them a keylogger or a virus.

 

 

 

I think Jagex should look at a filter with more powerful capabilities (if they aren't already, and if such exists for a Java application) because some very benign words get filtered-- the latest being the s on the end of "'s".

 

 

 

The censor is English-based, and players speaking languages other than English may find that their everyday words are filtered, while profanities are not. I have noticed this with Spanish. Craven_Image said in another thread (he attends a university where Jagex recruits) that versions are planned in other languages, but I'm not sure if that will clear up the problem in that regard.

i actually hear (well, read -.-) worse from runescapes 8 year old population.

 

 

 

e.g. from this morning, helping ye newbes in ye olde lumbridge with plentyfuls of free gold. (trader (aka 8 year old) shall be T, i shall be M (note, the pieces i have censored were not censored in game, they were 'tasteful' variants of the filtered spelling.

Sue Jagex? They have "You must be 13+ years old to play" in the Agreement thing. And Jagex are in UK, so it wil be funny a angry mom living in USA sueing Jagex :lol:

I think that the majority of the censor should be lifted. We should be able to say words like crap, piss and damn, as they really aren't that bad. I think that all the racist terms should still be censored, as well as the terms that focus on homosexuals. The censor is just annoying... and the fact that they need a whole 7 days to correct something doesn't help either.

I suppose the "lighter" curse words (Damn, crap...) would be okay uncensored, but the stronger ones should definitely stay blocked. I don't mind a few "Damn, lost more iron than I expected" and "Crap! Pk clan! Run!" (or even a lot if it came down to it) as those are phrases I might even use, but I play RS to get away from the stronger curses that are so prevalent on the Net (and in general life, sadly), and I really would hate to see them invade my escape.

Well, Jagex has made the rule (Thank god for it) that only 13+ year olds can play Runescape.

 

 

 

Uhh I started playing when I was 8 I think and I just said I was 13. (Note I am 14 now so don't bother trying to report me for being underage :D )

You look at all the other games, you hardly have any of the words that runescape censors in their censor.

 

Its stupid how immature they think we are. They even censor fart. Seriously.

 

 

 

Putting the f-bomb in a game will make it a mature rating, I believe.

 

 

 

Crap, damn, fart (I still can't get over that), s, the random letters in statements, loads of things need to be uncensored.

 

 

 

What needs to be censored, though, are the inappropriate acronyms used. They are censored on here so I can't give you the examples.

 

 

 

Also, turn down the sensitivity. Its annoying.

 

People will keep finding ways to avoid the filter. For example, you can't say the male reproductive organ, but you can say like "My pen is huge."

 

 

 

Soon, if they keep censoring everything, we won't be able to say like anything at all. They might as well remove the chat function if they do that.

I sorta agree with you. The main swear words should be blocked out but other things....like...my name Tb*graphx14 :cry: but as you know, all th noobs have adjusted too getting around the filter, so if they took it out Now, then there just would be profanity everywere.

Just because Under 13s are no longer playing Runescape, doesn't mean to say that any Over 13s aren't offended by swearing. There's just no need for it.

 

 

 

Swearing can be used to good effect, but it takes effort, effort which isn't there during a runescape conversation. Used blatantly, Curse words, Profanity, whatever you may call them, will only make you seem immature and petty.
