what caused the price of rares to rise so quickly?

Featured Replies

The last time I had a rare was when I had a white phat which was worth 15 mil. I stopped playing on new years 05 and I started playing again in summer 06. I knew the price would raise but not pass 100m+.

I guess the same people who faked selling phats for like 8+ mil did the same but 100+ mil? I don't think the price raised just by more people playing runescape and more items like coal and stuff in the game.

Are people even paying full cash for phats these days or most of the trades are phat + cash?

Rares grow on average at a rate of about 10x per year - which is huge but it still follows the inflation rates (check a tip it times article by duke freedom about that).

Prices rise somewhat due to manipulation, but for the most part it's natural inflation to blame for that.

Party hats still go for all cash - it's somewhat hard to find a pure cash buyer though.

with more santa, cracker, phats, masks, pumpkins, disc of returning, easter eggs gone prices go up since there are not many left

Long-term price development of rares is unaffected by price manipulation. Rares are bound to go up and the current prices of rares seem quite natural.

bring in dupelication again.. then they will go down in price.. and i can buy my first rare items!! woop

Another reason for the increase in rares prices was the Durial thing, where lots of people died, whilst they had their rares on them.

Um no. Yes people died with rares but i dont think 10 santa hats out of the game is gonna make an impact (using santa hats as an example). No one even knows exactly what he had either so for all you know that green phat could have been the only rare he had which he gave to a friend before he got banned

Constrion is sort of the reason too. People where selling rares cheap to do the skill. When merchanters relized rares where cheap they started buying them all up, more demand than supply=huge increase

Stop acting such a moron.

I'm looking at a different angle with rares. If you flip them over... they say made by Jagex. Clearly, the quality of products made by this place is sub-standard. Therefore, rares rise because the merchandise isn't as high of quality as it should be. It falls apart and that leaves fewer products in the market.

(If anyone from Jagex sees this, remember... I'm your best friend. Be gentle with me)

The cause for the recent jump in rares posted prior to me.

Supply and Demand buddy.. the supply doesn't increase and the demand does.

If anything the supply drops.

Rare prices pretty much follow a steady exponential growth.

Yep, people quitting, getting banned, etc. make party hats' numbers to go down.

Awesome for people who do have party hats though :-w

Players getting banned with hundreds in possession contributed as well.

They hoarded them so that alot of other players who wanted them could not get them and getting banned helped that.

??

I've been walking, in my sleep

Can you give me what I need?

This isn't entirely accurate, I've not got any level 1 skills

Solution: Make them untradeable. That way no one cares about how high they can go.

Solution: There is no solution, since there is no problem.

I agree with Adam.

Let us have our rares

Does anyone happen to know death_siren? She stole a green mask from me, and I think I found my way into her ignore list. If you know anything, please, don't hesitate to give me a pm.

why say "Solution:" at the begining at your post if there is none :-k

From seeing huge massive threads arguing if there's a problem, you're solving a problem by getting rid of this problem of people thinking that there's one, which I see to be a problem. I wonder if I used the word problem enough.

The reasons why the price of rares rose over the years:

1: Hackers: Many people hacked rares and also got banned with it. Making amount of rares decrease and more valuable each year.

2: Merchanting: Everytime people merchant with rares, prices raises, and since it is an item that does not have a set of price, no one knows how much is it. For example, Santa hats is a great merchant product, it raise from 16.5mill to nearly 20 mill now.

3: New skills: Everytime there are new skills appeared on rs, for example construction, people tends to want to become the first one to have a top ten high score for such new skilld. And they tend to sell their rares at high price to get money to raise their levels faster. (slayer is another example)

4: Fakers/jealousy: Alot of people who tries to sell there rares usually rares a rare while doing things. When people say " nice santa, how much is it?" people tends to raise the price.. ... for example, a person who brought a santa for only 15m,... people tend to stretch it to 18m.. since all they really needed to say, when someone denies the price is.. "the price has raised, check (forums, tips, runehq)".....but the price did not really raise, they were just faking it... and people will just believe it

5: Forums: Rs forum is a good way to merchant, since everyone watches the price now.. most rare price raise due to forum .. for example... a conversation i have seen in edveville at the start of the contrucstion feud:

a: " Selling my santa for 16.5 mill"

b: " Santas arent that much, they are only 14mill"

a: " its 16.5mill check the forum"

note that when I went to check... someone was selling for 16.5mill.. but no one buys it.

6: the Massacre: Alot of people kill and stole phats during that awfull period of bug abuse... and alot of people at the same time... got banned with it,, bringing the rares banned with it...

7: Retired players: There are alot of retired players in the game carrying tons of rares with them. And yet, they dont want to spend time selling them, therefor, leaving alot of rares becoming more valuable since there arent manny left in the game.

8: Rs famous and humorous wise old: Obviously, he raised the price of blue phat ever since he robbed th bank and once a blue phats price raise, other better looking phats will also raised with them.. followed by other rares..

9: Holiday Events: Once a new holiday events rise in rs.. people will always try to buy a rare to live with the spirits of holiday.. which also raise the price of rares...

The way I see it, rares are useless, and mostly no one can afford one, so why bother?

If you say it looks cool, get out your rubber chicken, full mime/full lederhosen/full camo/full frog/full dragon etc etc.

If you say it is a sign of wealth, build a house, or get full dragon. THAT is impressive, not having a 500 mil piece of useless coloured paper, that you got for free/merchanted for/stole/pked/hacked/borrowed/scammed or otherwise.

And before anyone flames me, I have a rare. AND I plan on selling it. The day I can get 200k big bones for it, it's sold!

ue5wr.jpg

Wow...I just scanned it with my new high tech program called "common sense" and it detected a scam.

Rares are a sign of wealth. Full dragon is as well, but I'm going to be a helluva lot more impressed with a blue phat then by full dragon/a nice POH.

Having a 500mil piece of paper IS impressive. Maybe not to you, but the majority think so (well the majority of the people who know what it is)

And having a rare doesn't exempt you from being called an idiot(I own a corvette, but I'd still be called an idiot if I said that all corvette owners should drive their cars over a bridge). You might not think it looks cool, but others do.

You might not think it's impressive, but others do.

Guess what? The world does NOT revolve around YOUR oppinion!

Rares are not useless. This is a fact, not an oppinion. Phat merchanting is by far the best way in the game to earn cash (exept maybe staking phats, but both involve them anyway).

Quit runescape, now playing EVE-Online(Mail Cambarus and say hi  )
