Work experience.. Is that like where you go and be an intern for a while or getting an actual job? (Just wondering because I plan on getting a job after I get through drivers ed this fall and get a car \ )

 

Im in drivers ed in 12 hours.

Well, you don't exactly need 500 Extracurricular activities to get into college. As long as you have SOMETHING it should be fine -- it doesn't really matter what it is, as long as you stick with it. :)

If you want to get into a good college, yea. Unless your grades more than make up for it. Colleges look for well rounded students, not just book smart students.

they look at SATs and GPAs. i say yes it does matter, i did not do any of those things in 9th but plan too in 10th. you do not have to have everything on the list but need something especially if you gpa is less than 3.5. so if you do not do school activities do community activities. if you do not do that do work expierience.

 

 

 

make sure you have at least one. school activities work xp or community volenteer activities.

either, but gah i did not do any extra [cabbage] in 9th grade and have to fill a resume for an internship with nothing to make me look good. that is what the extra [cabbage] is for to make you look good and well rounded, i;d say do research cause i am not effort smart but i looked at the colledge i wanted they said they liked GPA when i am going more for an SAT kinda thing cause i 0wn test standardised like that but :twisted: :twisted: projects and homework. look for the colledge that favors your qualifications best. if you have 4.0 look for that if you do basketbal look for that. HAVE FUN and do not wait till your a senior to think bout this stuff.

It's more about being able to spin whatever you do than actually doing it. If you can emphasise the transferrable skills you've picked up and how they make you a suitable candidate, i don't think it's massively important how you gained them. If you do absolutely nothing but go to school and sit on your pc, it's going to be hard to find any way of evidencing this - but if you do at least some things with your life you've got a good chance.

 

Having said that, if you're looking at 'just' making the grades, and it's a popular college, a few extra-cirricular activities may help.

Well Extracurricular activities aren't necessary a must, but they allow you to develop you're talents and generally help develop skills for later. Most importantly is that you should pick one activity and just stick to it, showing that you are dedicated and responsible.

 

 

 

Even, if the college doesn't require them, its a good thing to have.

The cool thing about any of the State Universities in Iowa (ISU, UofI, etc), is that they're actually required by law to admit you if you're in at least the top half of your class.

 

 

 

Or at least that's what my counsellors told me. You may want to check, but it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if it was still true.

Yeah, their acceptence rate is something like 84% (not completely sure).

 

 

 

 

 

@theslayer: I don't think that will help (but I do like being right \ ). He played a lot of sports when he was young and had been offered a scholorship to some school to play football. He turned it down and went to a 2 year college (I don't remember his reasoning but it wasn't good) and soon after married my mom and a year later I came along : So I think the biggest thing he wants is me to do what he decided not to.. Which isn't gonna happen :-$

There are only a few true "game design" schools in this country at the moment. The rest are half-assed animation/programming courses.

 

 

 

Digitech (in Washington, I believe) was the first and is considered the best by most, and you need to have had good grades to get in, plus it's expensive and when you get there, not only do they shove you through animation, programming, etc etc etc all in full-force, but you also have to take physics and math classes up the butt.

 

 

 

It baffles me that some people think "Yea man I'm going to grow up and make games!" and think that means they're going to be playing games and having fun for a living - In reality, you're going to be making games, hardly playing them, and you're going to bust your butt for low pay in most cases.

 

 

 

Have fun. It's why I changed my mind, I wanted to do what you want to do aswell, but I couldn't put up with the 'tards who think it's a smooth sailing, game-all-day fun time.

Heh, for a while I was thinking of a career in video game design, but after trying to learn how to program (through online help) I decided that just wasn't for me. Now I'm planning on a career in photography (which I can get my bachelor's degree in at UofI). I used to take photographs all the time but I lost the recharger for my camera battery (but I'm gonna buy a new camera once I get a job).

I believe it would be a very good career for me, but it would make me pretty unhappy in the long-run I think. Think about it...You spend so much time MAKING a game, and it's a great game...Then what? You wouldn't even want to play it because you'd be sick of seeing it. I changed my mind because of that too...I love games and I think if I made them, I'd get tired of them, but it was mostly because I wouldn't be able to stand the people I'd be around - thinking they can coast through school and then play video games as a living.

 

 

 

I'm probably going to go into Architectural Drafting or something. My dad has been building houses for 20+ years so it's probably in my blood to do something with construction, but I find the actual building of a house to be...Well, too damn hard. Working outside for 20 years is hard on guys and I don't want to have my back be crappy and stuff like that, so I figure if anything, I can do blueprints and stuff for houses. Make more money and you don't have to break your back everyday. I used to draw houses and stuff when I was little (in blueprint form, usually...No idea why) so I figure it's the right path for me.

I think that looking at the issue from the angle of 'is it necessary?' is all wrong. The idea behind clubs isn't to make students' college applications look better; it's to make students feel involved and happy throughout high school. The fact that colleges and universities look favorably upon them is an added bonus. Now I'm not saying you need to go out for sports or anything you hate for the sake of personal fulfullment, but you really should explore what your school has to offer. For me, it was choir, AP classes, drama, and journalism staff that kept me feeling happy; for you it might be something like an art club or volunteer programs. I can't emphasize enough how much better being a part of something extra will make high school, leaving out all the fringe benefits that result.

 

 

 

Another thing to consider would be funding for school. Perhaps you're rich and can already afford university without any additional funding, but for many students (read: me) that simply isn't the case. While admissions may not be interested in extracurricular activities, you can bet that any opportunities for scholarships and grants will place a good deal of importance on them. Trust me; I've done a good bit of scholarship hunting this year, since the good old University of Utah just raised tuition yet again and Blockbuster sure doesn't pay enough to cover my education.

 

 

 

Looking back after completing high school, I can tell you right now that there are plenty of reasons to become involved; just because it isn't mandatory for acceptance to a state school doesn't mean it's a waste of time and effort, and I think your father realizes that.

Honestly just do some if it makes your dad be quite. I was in a bunch of clubs but only went to the meetings that i held a position in (and even those i mostly skiped). All you need to do is go to the first meeting of the club and sign up, after that don't come at all. It really doesn't matter, if you pay your dues they shouldn't bother you (if they do say you have work or something). Activities look good on transcripts, you really should have atleast a few clubs/sports under your belt. State schools don't really care as much, but you should still ahve something. If you are going to a prestigious college you really want to hold some position/varsity.

I've never attended after-school activities. Hell, I've never even attended SCHOOL (homeschooling FTW!).

Some universities by law must admit you according to a certain scoring scale. In Texas, if you're in the top 10% of your graduating High School class, you are automatically admitted to any Texas public university, so yeah, check that up in your state.
