Are those participating in the on-line community contributing to society?

That's what I was wondering to myself the other day. Opinions?

It really depends on what the nature of the community is. If you're participating in an online support group or a forum for homework help then yes, you are contributing to society, there are plenty of examples of that...

Of course some people participating in online communities are contributing to society just by staying off the street :-w

Rofl. But as Adam said, there is an internet society, and I think in the future, perhaps not near, but in the future, there won't be much difference.

I buy Windows to waste my life on a computer, thus I give money to Microsoft.

Bill Gates owns Microsoft so now he has the money.

Gates gives some of the money to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

they give their money to the world.

^ See, we are helping the world.

I really don't think that the internet community contributes much to anything at all except over inflated egos as a result of anonymity. (over use of smartness -> bacab's having a mental breakdown) You could literally say just about anything on basically anysite where people don't know who you are and have it not affect your life in any way at all, except for the ego of course. ^.^ "pmg1 i just rebuked someone and i'm totaly smerter then they are1111" (not that this happens alot)

But some internet communties like My Shpace can help contribute to society. For example, the Choir in my school has it's own user group thingy on that website. And other stuff like that helps kinda. But it could also hurt society. Like that one boyfriend I met over that site, he was a total loser and I was glad when he broke up with me. I even deleted myself from that site. But I don't know how that's relevant to anything.

So it depends alot on where you go and also whether you're anonymous or not.

We don't rebel to sell it just suits us well, we're the bright young things.

Well, first up: Hey oiler! How you doing? Haven't seen you for awhile and I'd like to hear your opinion.

I think that we are. Sometimes we don't even mean to, but either directly or indirectly, we contribute. It may be good or bad, but I think it happens. If you think now, society is so widespread it would be ignorant (IMO) for it not to cover internet activities.

Yeah sure we do.

I mean how often are you able to discuss issues with people half a world away in real life? :|

The Enrichment Center reminds you that the weighted companion cube will never threaten to stab you and, in fact, cannot speak.

In the event that the weighted companion cube does speak, the Enrichment Center urges you to disregard its advice.

Yes. And a penguin lover as well.

I guess it all depends on the community, but I can deffinitly say i'm not here to try and benifit society. :D

Hey Bubsy! Ya, I haven't been around these boards in a while. I haven't quite formed an opinion yet, that's why I came here :P I'll post my opinion after I've viewed a few.

I like to think so. I absorb a lot of info from the off-topic section which I take into account in real life. Heck, if I hadn't seen Hobgoblins trade up I wouldn't have traded my CD for his book.

If I hadn't got that book I wouldn't be freakishly paranoid about sleep paralysis. :uhh:

The internet is the most anti-social thing ever invented. So the answer is no I guess.

Hey, hey hey! Where'd you get THAT bit of information from?!

Nothing good has come out of the internet. Nothing to help society anyway. If anything it has acted against society, many people prefer to talk to people they don't know (online) than they do know in real life.

I beg to differ! How would many students do their projects and become smart people? You say the library. Well more information is on the internet than books. It's also easier to find. Now I agree that not everything is good about the internet but you cant say everything about it is bad.

I think it raises public awareness[/b][/i]

Well, I could play runescape when I'm bored on a Saturday night....

Or...I could be a roughty teenage boy who goes out, gets drunk, has sex, and lives at my girlfriend's house and never does anything else. I could live from weekend to weekend, with barely a thought about college.

Yes, I know plenty of people like that.

At least I can learn things on the net...even in runescape (somewhat). Not to mention, even if I'm not productive, I'm at least not destructive.

Excellent point. But would you be that type of person, should you not be playing runescape?
