A Soldiers View of Iraq

Featured Replies

Completely non-partisan, amusing, and an extremely good read into the life of a US soldier.

Best thing I have ever read, and it's not even propaganda! Article is part of the New York Times:

Written last month, this straightforward account of life in Iraq by a Marine officer was initially sent just to a small group of family and friends. His honest but wry narration and unusually frank dissection of the mission contrasts sharply with the story presented by both sides of the Iraq war debate, the Pentagon spin masters and fierce critics. Perhaps inevitably, the 'Letter from Iraq' moved quickly beyond the small group of acquantainaces and hit the inboxes of retired generals, officers in the Pentagon, and staffers on Capitol Hill. TIME's Sally B. Donnelly first received a copy three weeks ago but only this week was able to track down the author and verify the document's authenticity. The author wishes to remain anonymous but has allowed us to publish it here ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Ã

My heart is broken by the terrible loss I have sustained in my old friends and companions and my poor soldiers. Believe me, nothing except a battle lost can be half so melancholy as a battle won. -Sir Arthur Wellesley

Interesting. It seems that this interview wasn't as corrupted as the usual ones. Good job finidng it.

It's not an interview. It's a letter to his friends and family, who then forwarded it. It is used with his permission.

Its 11:55 PM here, but this just made my day. =D>

The Enrichment Center reminds you that the weighted companion cube will never threaten to stab you and, in fact, cannot speak.

In the event that the weighted companion cube does speak, the Enrichment Center urges you to disregard its advice.

Great read, I especially liked how he made it in the Most X style :P

I just posted something! ^_^ to the terrorist...er... kirbybeam.

Good read really. If you want another great account of soliders' experiences in Iraq go see War Tapes. I'm not sure whether or not it is out on DVD or in theatres because I saw it at a dollar cinema several weeks back. In any case, keep your eye for it if you're interested :)

My favorite was the "Most Profound Man in Iraq."

Definitely a good read. I love how you have to stretch to make it an argument for or against the war. It's completely apolitical :D

There's a US tanker on another board I frequent who is keeping up a blog of his deployment to Iraq. I would provide the link, but it has a lot more profanity than these boards would allow.

Reading all these reports from soldiers in the field makes me very disillusioned with mass media. While mainstream news is all too quick to jump on reports of military personel dying or controversial treatment of prisoners, they seem to forget about the other things that Coalition forces are doing in Iraq and Afghanistan: setting up hospitals, schools, weeding out insurgents who hit civilians about as often as anyone else...

That said, I'm not exactly supporting the war as a whole, but to say I'm against it would be very far from the truth.

Nobody is ever proud of a war. If you are proud of one, then you are mentally ill. What you should be proud of is the people involved in such a war, risking thier lives for what they believe in. It seems to me a few people on the homefront need to learn that lesson. :(

Very VERY good read barihawk. Solid detail of everyday life in Iraq. I too have heard great tales of fortune and or misfortune of a day in the life of a soldier. They can be grave or full of wealth and information for everyday life.

Yeah ill stop rambling, good job thanks for providing this to us bari, we owe you i think.

Wow. I didn't expect that I would read it all. Very interesting.

At least, I think that.

IED's and mines are insurgent weapons that are used against US forces...

Feedback page now up and working.

This really opened my eyes. I knew there was still trouble in Iraq but I thought that it was very isolated incidents not still a war.
