Based on Frank Miller's graphic novel, "300" concerns the 480 B.C. Battle of Thermopylae, where the King of Sparta led his army against the advancing Persians; the battle is said to have inspired all of Greece to band together against the Persians, and helped usher in the world's first democracy.

 

In 480 BC, the Persian king Xerxes sends his massive army to conquer Greece. The Greek city of Sparta houses its finest warriors, and 300 of these soldiers are chosen to meet the Persians at Thermopylae, engaging the soldiers in a narrow canyon where they cannot take full advantage of their numbers. The battle is a suicide mission, meant to buy time for the rest of the Greek forces to prepare for the invasion. However, that doesn't stop the Spartans from throwing their hearts into the fray, determined to take as many Persians as possible with them.

I read a book about the battle of Thermopylae, I've been there, I've seen documentaries about it, and yes, it was spectacular how Spartan hoplites stood firm against an army of thousands and thousands, but it wasn't that heroÃÆÃâÃâïc. The Persians, who barely had any protection and rusty blades, were underfed, they were trapped in the Greek mountains where they had to fight the best known soldiers at that time, who did not fear anything. Those Persians trampled over eachother, because in that mountainpass they all pressed forward, while the Spartans happily slaughtered the small front lines of the Persians, who did not stand a chance with their short swords vs. the hoplite spears.

 

 

 

It could have been a great movie, but I'm afraid it will be even a lot worse than Alexander was. Why do all of those movies have to be spectacular and unrealistic?

Yes i've read about that battle before. Shortly before the battle of Salamis I think, and after Marathon. Sounds good but as Oy said, quite unrealistic to the truth. But they couldn't put what you said Oy into the movie, that wouldn't make a good movie more a documentary.

How would it be a bad movie if it has realistic fighting scenes, realistic romances and not that divine crap?

 

The trailer makes it seem like a myth, like Troy was, full of heroes that were sons of Zeus or Ares. But not a single Trojan would ever dare to claim their mortal bodies were part of their supreme God Ares, which they worshipped above all others.

 

I find it sad that Greek stories always have to be spectacular, bloody and sexy. Especially historical facts. Stories like Troy or the Oddyseia can be spectacular, because that's what they were intended to be according to Homeros, but history, like the battle of Thermopylae, shouldn't be filmed like that.

 

 

 

If I would direct that movie, I'd make a movie about what the Trojan soldiers think, if they were silently afraid to die, if they really were fearless or if they collapsed when they saw their friends die in battle. And about the misery of the Persian army, the (good) emperor Xerxes who lead a horrible campaign.

 

I would not, however, make a movie with blood, sex and gore as if it were the Colloseum. Movies like Gladiator are made for that, because that's the intention of a Gladiator, to entertain the crowd with blood.

 

It's not the intention of a soldier to entertain, he wants to survive and serve his country. But it seems that Leonidas, the famous king of sparta, who was an old general, not a strong youngman as seen in the trailer, is a tirannic barbarian. BS like that proves the director is another traditional Hollywood fool.

 

 

 

Movies like these go straight into the thrashcan if it were up to me.

Oy, you have to remember this is based off of a novel and not what actually had happened. Yes, some truth is stretched. However, they aren't trying to sell it as a "realistic movie" and re-enactment of the event.

Haha :D I really wish I could, but unfortunately, my Aoe version is illegal and I can only play it against people with the same version. And apparently (Apinagez and me tested it) it only works in Belgium. I sent Api my version, which took bloody long, but we couldn't play :(

 

So unless you know of a way to get the real aoe version for less than 5ÃÆââââ¬Ã¡Ãâì (at most ;)) I can't show you how a pro does it ;)

I agree i'm not a big movie person. To me if it entertains me it was worth watching. Obviously, however, I wouldn't hold something like this movie against something that's more than just a "movie".

I can't really get into any of Frank Miller's graphic novels or comic books. I did really enjoy Sin City, which he wrote. He co-directed the movie also, hopefully they allow him to co-direct 300.

The graphic novel turned out to be pretty awesome. Sure it's not historically accurate, who the hell cares? Watch the history channel if that is what you want. It's a movie, made to entertain.

I've read Batman: Year one and Batman: The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller and would highly recommend both of these to anyone interested in a good story. I'm going to try and read 300 before the movie comes out.

I don't know why everyone seems to be getting butt-hurt over this, it's based off a graphic [wagon]-kicking comic book, so what else would it be other than a graphic [wagon]-kicking movie? Shallow action movies still do have their place at the cinema, definatly a movie i'd see with my friends for a fun time.

This movie wasn't made to be a documentary you idiot, it's not an accurate historical account of what happened, nor was it intended to be. It's made for entertainment, get over it.

It looks great. I'm seeing it the day it comes out. And I've even got a Movie Theatre Gift Certificate. ^.^
