KCHughes Posted November 14, 2006 Share Posted November 14, 2006 I heard this today...took me a while to figure out. See how good you do. You're kidnapped by a madman and blindfolded. You get taken into a room where the madman tells you that inside the room, there are two vertical poles. One pole is red, the other is green. The green pole leads upwards into the ceiling and to freedom. He also tells you that two other men are in the room, one standing next to each pole. One of the men always tells the truth, and the other will always lie. You must figure out which pole is green by asking one question to the two men. You can only ask one question. What question do you ask? If you know the answer, please write it in very small font size so nobody can read it unless they're trying to cheat. The point is that you're blindfolded, and you can't tell which is the red or green unless you ask the men at the feet of the poles. I've seen a much better worded brain teaser with this same theme. Apparently, it's a classic: You are traveling down a road toward [location] and you come to a fork in the road. One man is standing in the middle of each branch. They are the only people who know which way you should go to get to [location]. One man only tells the truth, one man only tells lies. You have to ask the same question to both of them in order to find out which one is honest. Just so you know, there are multiple answers to this question. I'm a straight edge vegan. Pointless.. :lol: If I was suicidal though, I'd ask the honest guy, "what's the red pole for". For all I know it could lead to a chocolate wonderland and you miss the chance because you didn't ask. Then, when you came back with a stomach (and pockets) full of chocolate, you still have a 50% chance of surviving AND you experienced paradise on earth. Or then it just leads to hell, but I wouldn't care since I was suicidal anyways. It discusts me that these companies are allowed to air on TV. Ordinary people sometimes need entertainment that makes them feel smart, so if it makes a lot of money for the owners of the company, don't expect them to cancel their shows anytime soon. Just ask either of them which pole the other one would send you on if you asked him. Pick the other pole. Hooray. Explanation: If you ask the honest guy, he'll indicate the wrong pole (since thats what the liar would point at) If you ask the liar, he'll also indicate the wrong pole, since he lies about the fact the honest guy would show the good pole) Either way you get the wrong pole as answer so pick the other one.
