November 25, 200619 yr Id like to refer this thread to everyone: http://forum.tip.it/viewtopic.php?t=568079&start=0 Ok, anyways. I believe Christmas is too commercialized, but besides that, its ok. I'm and atheist, and could care less about the religious aspect of it. I think its just a time to be happy, and by arguing about correctness (i.e. what you all are doing) you are killing the holiday. So no matter your religion, take a moment and think, does Christmas have to be a Christian holiday? Or can it just be a holiday where everyone gets together, and forgets differences, and actually unify as one world for once. Christmas is a holiday to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Most religions have accepted the fact that He was real, but not all think he was any difference. So I guess yes, Christmas can be celebrated by everyone, since Jesus was real. But it has a different meaning to Christians. Why would an atheist celebrate the birth of someone they don't care about? That's silly. They can just celebrate the commercial Christmas and Christians can celebrate the religious and commercial Christmas.

Just because it has the same name, doesn't mean it can be the same thing. I.E, "christmas" can be both the celebration of Jesus's birth and just a great day to give gifts and share time with family. Giving it a different name is just stupid. Kind of the extent of me saying "oh, we should rename christmas to 'Jesus was born on this day day'."

If you want to get technical anyway, we shouldn't be celebrating Christ's birth on December 25th anyway. OMG THE WURD CHRISTMAS SAZ CHRIST IN IT SO ATHEEISTS SHULDNT CELEBRATE!!1! Seriously. Don't be ridiculous.
November 25, 200619 yr :x Seems I have been misinterpreted. I said Christmas can be for everyone. Doesn't mean everyone has to celebrate it for 1 of 2 reasons. I'm an atheist, and i don't like the commercialism. Instead i just like the happy feeling and togetherness of the season. Presents mean nothing. Oh, and i just found out two hours ago my dad just got laid off work, and he was the major source of income to the family. Know what, i could care less. Christmas is Christmas, and no lack of presents will change that. Sig by IkuraiYour Guide to Posting! Behave or I will send my Moose mounted Beaver launchers at you!
November 25, 200619 yr You only get 1 day off? i get 6 weeks off, don't you get a one giant holiday, we have chunks of holidays about 2 weeks long except Christmas and thats 6 weeks. yeah its kinda stupid spending heaps on kids, i don't need it. A kid in my class has a xbox360 hes other brother has one and hes sister has one... you know why? he said its because he doesn't like to share! Wtf "If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen." - Samuel AdamsMy new site. [bETA]

And no offense to any Buddhist people if you consider this offensive.) Just because Christianity is the most popular religion in the world doesn't make Christmas any different than any other god's birthday. But yeah, I have no idea what "mas" means. If it means "day", then Christmas is Christ Day. A day to celebrate Christ. November 25, 200619 yr I agree that most kids think it's just a time where they get gifts for like no particular reason. I don't believe in Jesus, but hey, the free few days from school and work isn't bad! Why not take advantage of that and have some fun with your family. If you believe in Jesus, get your family together and celebrate it for the real reason and not just for gifts. Don't worry about those kids that rub it in your face, just be happy that you celebrated the true meaning of Christmas and they didn't. They just recieved gifts, but not the gift (pride?) you get for celebrating Christmas for the real reason. 99 Fletch~~99 WC~~79/81 Fishing87/94 Magic~~84 RangeEtha! November 25, 200619 yr You'll shoot your eye out, kid^^^That movie makes the Christmas season worth it.^^^ This is the way the world ends. Look at this [bleep]ing shit we're in man. Not with a bang, but with a whimper. And with a whimper, I'm splitting, Jack.
November 25, 200619 yr I don't mind calling it "holidays" or "christmas" Its the same (mostly) fun season anyway! The Enrichment Center reminds you that the weighted companion cube will never threaten to stab you and, in fact, cannot speak. In the event that the weighted companion cube does speak, the Enrichment Center urges you to disregard its advice.

Someone should just come up with an atheist holiday around this time, and we can all celebrate our holidays. Buddha's birthday has not gotten the idea of gift giving that christmas now has attachted to it, that's the difference. However, it would be no different if we gave gifts on his birthday and someone who wasn't buddhist celebrated it. However, christmas has changed in meaning over the years, and there is no denying that. Thanksgiving to many people is a day to just eat a ton of turkey. I don't know many people who "give thanks" on that day. Valentines day, yeah that one hasn't really had any other meanings because it's pretty straightfoward. Also, he can still celebrate "christmas". Last time I checked a majority of people see christmas as also celebrating with family and friends. It isn't the "holiday spirit", it's christmas.
November 25, 200619 yr I honestly could care less about almost every single holidy in existance. Christmas is my second most disliked (next to Valentines - over commercialised "holiday" where the guys are on the quest to find the "perfect" gift, AGAIN :uhh:); it brings out the 'once a year religious' people and it annoys me to no end. Like I try to enjoy the concept (family and such), but when most of them turn into born-again religious fanatics for 24hrs, no. Just doesn't work. Essentially, it has no meaning any more. It's just an excuse to spend big.
November 25, 200619 yr What I really hate is Saint Nick. I mean, you take a kid and tell him that there's magic in the world, tell him that there's one guy who can do the impossible and his soul purpose in life is to make kids happy, what's a kid gonna think? The obvious, the kid thinks it's great. Ask most kids, they tell you Christmas is their favorite day of the year. Kids become consumers...how can the not? They're hooked by the idea of all that mystery and suspense, all of those presents wrapped underneath the tree, all those precious things that they're raised to believe they can't live without. What a world shattering event it is when we find out the truth. There is no Santa Clause. No magic. No nothing. Just a bunch of rich white guys with a long term marketing philisophy. You know...get em while they're young. Like Mc'Donalds with the toys in the happy meals. Sure, give the kid a toy with his kids meal, whatever it takes to suck him in cause once he's had that sweet fill of caffeine and fat and sugar, he'll come back. I leave you with a quote from Trailer Park Boys: "Christmas isn't about gifts...it's about getting stoned and drunk with your friends!"

November 25, 200619 yr holy [cabbage] BEAR outa nowhere :| didn't see that one coming for sure... Neither did I. Wrenchs post changed my opinion (one of few times ever). Anyone can "celebrate" Christmas. But Ill know, in my heart, that they really arent and I am. Cheesy, eh? (My apostrophe key is broken, so dont say I have pathetic grammar.) November 25, 200619 yr Christmas is what you make of it :) It doesn't have any 'real' meaning that we should all aspire to give it - because it was long ago taken over by secularism, and it's not even Jesus's birthday on that day anyway - it was just a fairly arbitrary date chosen. If you want it to be about religion, then go to church. If you want it to be about family, then be with yours. If you want it to be about gifts, then give them (and hopefully get some back! ;) ). If you want it to be meaningless, then don't do anything for it. The Jewish families that give gifts, recognise that Christmas can have whatever meaning you want it to have. So don't have sour grapes just because other people gave it a meaning that you wanted. For it is the greyness of dusk that reigns. The time when the living and the dead exist as one.

November 25, 200619 yr xmas for me is just a glorified thanksgiving.. which is all good cuz i love the food and company of relatives...
November 25, 200619 yr it brings out the 'once a year religious' people. Yeah, that part is really annoying. Ghost: I am prejudice towards ignorance, so that would explain why I appear to be so.
