A thought on Scientology...

Today I watched a movie on the 70's in Social Studies, and they talked about the cult movement. I heard about witchcraft, moon godesses, and Scientology.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) that Scientology is the belief in spiritual presence through acual fact (hence the name), and the pursuit of total freedom.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Many famous people, including Tom Cruise and Issac Hayes (On a different note, he was the voice of "Chef" from South Park. He left South Park because they offended Scientology), are Scientologists. Many other people think Scientology is a cult.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I, however, don't really know. I don't want to get involved with it in any way, but I don't 100% believe it's a cult either.

Scientology can be considered a sect or a cult, there is evidence for both.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Cult is a word used by the media for both cult and sect, they use the word because implies negative connotations.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Because of this, Sociologists use the term New Religious Movements, and identify different types of NRM as:

 

 

 

World Affirming

 

 

 

World Accomodating

 

 

 

World Rejecting.

Yea, but I also believe Scientology doesn't believe in the use of modern medicine.

They have also allegedly refused treatment for a seriously ill scientologist who could was not in a fit state of mind, and she consequently died. Look up Lisa McPherson.

To be honest, Scientology is one of the only "religions" that scare the beejesus out of me. I've heard their beliefs, and even read up about Lisa McPherson as well as some other Scientology-related deaths. I'm not one to go around saying that their beliefs are wrong, but to me, they do certainly seem far-out. I don't like how they seemingly don't believe in modern medicine, and how they seem to needle their members for "donations" to the church quite regularly.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I could never ever be a one, since I am on medication for depression and I think that I need it, and I would like to go to medical school. I'm sure they wouldn't find much common ground with me.

I was watching this video of a writer getting harassed by Scientologists. They sent this hobo to camp in front of his house with a sign saying something about him being a bigot. The writer owned his wagon :lol:

I don't understand how their "followers" can follow the writings of a fiction novel and take it seriously. I really don't. At least other religion's follow something we don't KNOW is fiction or not, and it promises something good for you....Scientology is fiction, and you get nothing. *Shrug*

I think he may have gotten offended, but that wasn't the reason he quit. He quit because of medical problems.

If they'd just read the damn book, they'd be like "Wow, this is dumb." and "Wow, L. Ron Hubbard had NO imagination. DC-10's? Loser." instead of bowing to a fiction book. I can imagine why people buy it. Once i was at this idk how to call it. Scientology built up a tent somewhere in the city and you could go in. Out of curiosity i did. Immediately one of those guys welcomed me and went trough his recruiting routine. (The guy was obviously hopelessly brainwashed btw. Extremly enthusiastic and talking as if he would offer me a revelation. hard to describe. however)

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Basically Hubbard in his over human genius discovered what everbody else missed: Most people on this planet suffer. Big news =P Not only that: Using his uber brilliant mind he came up with numerous patent recipes enabling us ordinary people to help all those suffereing people around us. Long story short: I can imagine that there are people out there buying this stuff, because honestly the fact that people suffer is nothing idk TV will tell you (TV will only tell you that people in foreigne countris are suffering)

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Anyway after about twenty minutes of nodding and smiling (I didn't try to argue with him, not my style) i was dismissed. I decided to buy one of hubbards books, because i wanted to know what this guy actually writes, although i regret to have funded Scientology that way. The book was a complete mess. Very bad structured pseudo scientific blah, blah. I read lots of literature about similar topics and this one was one of the worst. (Arguably the worst.)

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Oh! and btw: the word "sect" comes from the latin word "secere" wich means "split off". So basically for example protestantism is a sect of katholizism, or hare krishna is a hindu sect. By that definition scientology is rather a cult then a sect.

He took a leave of absence because of medical problems. From what I understand, he chose not to come back because of the episode. They played it as he quit because of the episode, but he didn't.

You missed the point he was making.[/b] What he's saying is we don't know whether or not the Bible is true. But we do know for a fact that whatever novel he's talking about is not true because we know the author of the novel wrote it to be fiction. You can believe whatever you want about the Bible but it's irrelevant because it's simply an opinion. But it's a fact that the novel is not true, i.e. fiction, because we know who wrote it, when he wrote it, with what intent he wrote it, etc. and we know he wrote it with the intent to be fiction.

You missed the point he was making.[/b] What he's saying is we don't know whether or not the Bible is true. But we do know for a fact that whatever novel he's talking about is not true because we know the author of the novel wrote it to be fiction. Exactly. It is exactly what I was saying about the Jedi religion. One is written with the intent of being fiction and we know that - the other way don't know if it's fiction or not.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I love Scientology though. One of the more entertaining parts of life at the moment. Seriously - if you're bored, what's more entertaining than reading about something crazy Tom Cruise has said in the name of Scientology? It's those moments in life when you can think to yourself, "At least I'm not as crazy as ______" that make you smile.
