deloriagod
Ok, the story.. My freshman year I was basically just another nerd but I was ok with it. My day consisted of school and video games. I didn't care about how others saw me or what I wore so long as it was comfortable. But around the end of the year I had a crush on this amazing girl but was too shy to talk to her and so that fell apart like many before. Throughout the summer I had a crush on another girl but wasn't as outgoing or talkative as she would have liked. And so we're now just friends. Start of my sophomore year I made some new friends. I became a little more outgoing and my parents were happy about that. I went out with friends a lot and stopped gaming. A lot of people started to know me. Now it's almost the middle of the year. I changed my hair which I had always combed the same way for ~6 years, I repierced my ear, I'm way more outgoing, I talk too much for some peoples' liking, and I've expanded my friends from just a few to many. I see all of these as positive changes. My dad doesn't like me changing, he wants me to keep being the nerdy kid that nobody knew. My mom seems to remain pretty neutral on this but go figure, she doesn't really want to make either of us mad. My dad is always threatening to take away things like my car, telling me I'm never going to get a girlfriend if I change my style, or just being a jerk about things like letting me drive myself places (now that I have my license). He also thinks I should make friends with the popular kids/jocks rather than stick with the people I enjoy being with, which makes me so mad that he doesn't accept my friends and would rather me be around people I hate. Now I think my parents are fairly normal, so does anyone else ever have this problem when they change something about themselves? You see this as spam? Oh well, I got a lot off my chest here.. insane
I get the feeling you're not telling the whole story. From your parent's point of view, have there been any negative side effects to this "style change"? (and yes, I'm assuming there has been a behavioural change as well, which may be the source of this negative feedback from the 'rents)

I know my father has almost no sense of humor. A few weeks ago I made a joke about me becoming a goth and he got mad about (when he gets mad he suddenly gets really cocky about how he can take away material posessions). Every time I tell him how I feel about something he always gets mad and threatens to take things away. The other day I mentioned I wanted to get a tattoo when I'm 18 and he got mad and went on about how until I move out I can't get one.. I know he's stressed out about his business a lot but does he really need to put a bunch of it on me? Internet Marketing For Newbies
Deeno13
Are there some negitive side effects of the changes? Are your new friends into drugs or drinking? Despite the common misconception your parents arn't out to ruin your life, somtimes you have to cut them some slack.
Faux
(and yes, I'm assuming there has been a behavioural change as well, which may be the source of this negative feedback from the 'rents) Yeah, becoming homosexual is a hell of a change. Not that there's anything wrong with that. It might take a while for the parents to get used to it. :: Guess the Movie Contest Champion: pfilc23 ::

On that subject, my mother has already told me she doesn't care if I go to parties and drink while I'm underage just as long as I call her for a ride home rather than driving. Anyways, has your attitude changed a bit? I know that my brother deffinitly did a lot of the same thing (he was pretty quiet around 6th grade, than 7th + 8th he got more popular.. into skating, ect.). All i'm saying is maybe your parrents just don't like any new attitude your have. Again I don't know the entire story so =P.

Seriously though, I never had a 'style changing moment' in my life. I wear and act how I've grown to be. I was always around with friends and never felt like a social outcast. Maybe it's cause there's always a smile on my face. :: Guess the Movie Contest Champion: pfilc23 ::

The biggest thing that has changed is that I don't sit around the house anymore or go everywhere with them. Instead I go out with my friend a lot but I'm still around a decent bit and occasionally I take a whole day/evening/whatever and spend with them. Another problem I have is when I used to stay home all the time they would tell me I needed to get out and do things. So I did and now they won't let me go off on my own as much. weezcake
Your parents think of you as their baby. Don't worry. After a while they'll get used to it, unless you start doing drugs and such (though I doubt this is the case). Give them some time to adjust. It's hard for parents when they see their "baby" growing up :) ==================================Retired tip.it moderator.Teaching and inspiring. Lionheart_0
It's all in the attitude. Maybe you just don't realize that maybe your doing something or acting in a way that is ticking him off and you just don't realize it because thats who you are. Like that wanting a tattoo when you are 18, i know its not bad thing to just bring it up, but maybe your dad just doesn't like it when people bring up stuff that he finds irritating and dislikes. My suggestion: Do what i do, live a separate life. Be as independent from your parents as possible without asking them for much (basically things you don't need, unless you don't have a job). This way when you do go to talk to and ask them about and for stuff, its a rare occasion so they may just not mind it. My parents actually like it when I talk because it means i have something to say. I don't say anything unless it is worth saying. Sig by IkuraiYour Guide to Posting! I was planning on looking for a job starting in January so I'll be fairly independent as far as things like gas and whatever else I want to buy goes. Also my mom isn't as bad as my dad.. At least she's letting me grow up.. That's kind of what I did. I lived away from home for 9 months, and coming back home was like stepping back into childhood. Since then I've found independence in every way except for shelter (which requires money). I pay my own insurance, gas, toiletries, clothing, social stuff, entertainment, and most of my school. Only thing I don't pay for is rent and food. Aside from that I'm totally independent, which is as far as I can get until I get my degree.
zerosouls
My moms never generally cared how i acted or what i did, she's pretty cool with whatever i do just as long as i keep taking out the garbage and cleaning my room every once in a while....
