The Coca Cola Rumours

Futurama

Recommended Posts

So, since a discussion in class today i've decided to test peoples/knowledge on the allegations regarding health problems with diet coke and coke zero. and please, no pepsi jokes :)

The sweetener in Diet Coke is made from a chemical called aspartame; Alleged harmful effects of aspartame ingestion include seizures and a change in the level of dopamine, a brain neurotransmitter. Symptoms associated with lupus, multiple sclerosis, and Alzheimer's disease have been claimed to result from an excess intake of aspartame. As well, aspartame consumption is claimed to increase the difficulty of diet-dependent diabetics in regulating their blood glucose level.

To tell you the truth i'm stopping drinking it to be on the safe side; sounds dodgy to me, so don't wanna take any risks :)

But I like Coca-Cola...Ah well..won't stop me. I'm stubborn. :D

I love it, too much. But after reading that eye-opener, I think I'm gonna' cut down. Big-time.

Cheers, Rob.

FYI: Aspartame is used in almost all artificially sweetened food. I am astonished that you are making a fuss about it being in coke since it is used in EVERY 'diet' soft drink, almost all chewing gum, just about anything that advertises itself as being low calorie.

Aspartame is nothing new. It has been used in food for well over a decade. I'm not saying it's good or okay, I'm saying that it is stupid to be making a fuss over one drink in particular, when it is used in all 'diet' soft drinks and pretty much anything that advertises itself as sugar free.

It won't help unless you cut out all artificially sweetened food.

Aspartame is a very common sweetener sold in supermarkets as the brand names NutraSweet and Canderel.

Its true that in large doses it is dangerous, but then so is chocolate.

I love diet coke, but don't drink that much. Not too worried about this though after the reading those few posts above sounds like it's just one of those things, I mean everything has side effects when taken to excess, so as long as you're not drinking a few litres of the stuff every day you should be okay.

Everything is bad for you if you have to much of it. I'm sure that drinking no more than a three or four cans a week wont affect me at all.

What? Dammit I love diet coke. I don't drink that much though, maybe a couple of cans a week on average, more on holiday. How much are they talking about though for these kind of effects? A few litres a day?

most likely a very large amount yes. i havnt looked into it but i would expect a "casual" or "occasional" drinker will have no effect, if that (how you have less than no effect i dont know)

also, yes its pretty common.

aspartame is in virtually every sweetened drink / some weird sweets

cutting down on coke isnt gonna do anything, and im certainly not gonna stop drinking coke because a study says theres a slight possibility that it may lead to a chance of a risk of cancer or whatever...

heard it all before - still not listening

Like said above: If it doesn't have sugar, it has aspartame. It's nothing new, it's common knowledge.

Not a reason to cut down on sodas though. I don't drink them simply because water and other drinks are better :P But yeah I'm aware of the new Coke Zero (which literally has 0 calories per serving), but compared to real coke, it just tasted weird. And real coke has lots of sugar.

What sort of irresponsible parent would let their 2/3/4/5 year old child drink 2 liters of diet coke? I call BS.

Let's examine our options:

  • [*:19kde8zb]The sort of parent who doesn't mind their child suffering tooth decay

[*:19kde8zb]The sort of parent who doesn't mind their child bouncing off the walls on caffeine (which has a more pronounced effect on young children, as do artificial colourings)

And also, the sort of parent who doesn't mind paying hundreds of dollars in dentist and health bills.

So teenage mothers then?

And since they don't have that kind of money, nor heath insurance, it's where welfare comes into play.
