The Coca Cola Rumours

BAHA, over here we got NHS> :P

Of course the United States doesn't have free health care. So the tax payers end up dishing out 100's of dollars to pay for people who keep popping out kids they can't take care of.

Aspartame is a very common sweetener sold in supermarkets as the brand names NutraSweet and Canderel.

Its true that in large doses it is dangerous, but then so is chocolate.

So is everything. :)

(My friend drank six cartons of chocolate milk today and was pretty sick for an hour or so. Just remembered that. :P )

Key words being six cartons. Having too much of anything makes you sick.

'course, when it comes to aspartame, 'anything' happends to have the anectodal set of sideeffects if you're unfortunate enough to lack a certain enzyme, so you can't properly metabolize some oddly-named byproduct of APM, the by product travels to your brain. Assuming I recall my chemistry lessons correct, the possible side effects of this range from depression, agression, moodswings and - in extreme cases - [developmentally delayed]ation.

And that's besides the fact that you can taste aspartame like slick oiled [cabbage] at the back of your mouth after drinking anything with it. Maybe you get used to it, but personally, anyone who pours down can after can of that rather than settling for a lot fewer cans of the real-tasting-deal has consumption issues.

And Viktor, edit or no edit, lactate is still a verb, lactose is the name of the substance in question =P

That is overwhelmingly true. It is foul, and that is the reason I avoid all 'diet' drinks like that.

So, since a discussion in class today i've decided to test peoples/knowledge on the allegations regarding health problems with diet coke and coke zero. and please, no pepsi jokes :)

The sweetener in Diet Coke is made from a chemical called aspartame; Alleged harmful effects of aspartame ingestion include seizures and a change in the level of dopamine, a brain neurotransmitter. Symptoms associated with lupus, multiple sclerosis, and Alzheimer's disease have been claimed to result from an excess intake of aspartame. As well, aspartame consumption is claimed to increase the difficulty of diet-dependent diabetics in regulating their blood glucose level.

To tell you the truth i'm stopping drinking it to be on the safe side; sounds dodgy to me, so don't wanna take any risks :)

This isn't true, the aspartame is commonly mixed up with the other chemical that's something like espartame. This is creating rumors like this. aspartame is located in many sodas including snapple, pepsi, and red bull.

Just drink regular coke: good ol' regular sugar (which, from what it sounds, may ironically be better for your health as its something your body actually recognises and can metabolise).

(Dont take my word for it, I havent done any research on the issue)

i dont belive this because i drink about 2 liters of diet coke each day, yes each day..im addicted =], and nothing has happened to me. Iv been drinking coke for the past 15 years and im 16 =O

I call BS. Toddler's teeth are extremely sensitive...My aunt let my cousin drink coke out of her baby bottle (idiot...) almost from day one, and her front teeth started to rot out by the time she was 4. Luckily they were baby teeth, so it didn't really matter.

Besides, it takes longer than 15 years. You're not even grown yet.

I'd be more worried about High Fructose Corn Syrup myself, but that's also in EVERYTHING on Earth, so...

The popularity of any given religion today depends on the victories of the wars they fought in the past.

Total BS.

First, people marinate ham in coke (Nigella Lawson) and it doesn't turn into liquid; it turns into tasty ham. Second, they tried it on Mythbusters and it is BS. That's not to say that Mythbusters is the be all and end all of scientific tests, since it is hardly scientific. It is still BS though.

I believe to much water can dilute the electrolytes in your blood, limiting proper muscle and nerve function.

There's more caffeine in most sodas than there is aspartame, and caffeine is worse for you. If anything, be afraid of the caffeine.

Caffeine is good in moderation. But like everything else, too much = bad

I know, what I meant was that if you're going to drink tons of Coke the caffeine will hurt you worse than aspartame will.

Then consider that a can of coke contains ~5mg of caffeine, whereas a cup of coffee contains over 40mg.

One of the many reasons why I do not drink coffee.

I don't drink diet anyway lol. But I do hear those kind of sweeters that aren't 100% sugar are quite harmful especially if you haven't stopped growing.

Random: Lol my dad is a doctor and 1 of his patience told him they were drinking coke cola and they found a cockroach in their mouth, lol. Its possible but not probable, but always remember it can always happen to you, just slim chances. Like getting the side effects of the artificial sweeteners are very low but skill a possibility.

BTW for the 2 posts above, thats why when I rarely drink coffee(that is always overpowered with chocolate, milk, vanilla, and cream) I always have decaf

FYI: Aspartame is used in almost all artificially sweetened food. I am astonished that you are making a fuss about it being in coke since it is used in EVERY 'diet' soft drink, almost all chewing gum, just about anything that advertises itself as being low calorie.

Aspartame is nothing new. It has been used in food for well over a decade. I'm not saying it's good or okay, I'm saying that it is stupid to be making a fuss over one drink in particular, when it is used in all 'diet' soft drinks and pretty much anything that advertises itself as sugar free.

I love it, too much. But after reading that eye-opener, I think I'm gonna' cut down. Big-time.

It won't help unless you cut out all artificially sweetened food.

Close to how I would respond to this lol.

I don't drink diet anyway lol. But I do hear those kind of sweeters that aren't 100% sugar are quite harmful especially if you haven't stopped growing.

So sue em. I doubt that happened, even if so it's 1 in a few billion. If you're scared about that think about eating in a resturant.

It's more likely that a resturant will have a cockroach in the food, crawled over the food, etc, than having it in a coke cola.

Just point out that people are very stupid sometimes when they think of, oh this certain company has "something" in it, when the things they're doing everyday has a much higher chance of having that "something".

Just like this post about coke cola zero. There are tons of other things that have the exact same artificial sweetner but they arn't noticed.
