So ever tried meditating?

I'm seriously looking into giving meditating a shot. I've heard only good things about it, and that it does wonders to relieving stress and cheering you up, not that I'm really stressed or down all the time, but still.

So does or has anyone ever meditated? Do you have any suggestions, or recommend any good books on it? Do you know of any other forms of meditating? I'm going to Google search this as well, but I thought I'd give it a shot and see if I can get any more personal answers.

Nope, I like to think just before I fall asleep or when I'm walking alone. That's my "meditation".

If i ever need some 'thinking time', i'll just put on some soul and sit in my garden or jacuzzi if i need to relax.

Althogh, the prospect could be interesting.

After my runs, I sit down in the grass and close my eyes. Oh and sometimes, I close my eyes when I walk home. It's funny how it's hard for me to do that in the beginning.

If they don't fit under meditation, I've meditated in my religion class at least twice.

I think meditation as in just completely relaxing and trying to turn your brain off is really good. I've tried it a few times - try not to think about ANYTHING. That's my form of meditation, it's impossible! I've never done it and starting to wonder whether it's actually possible! ::'

I've tried it, and I actually think it works. It relaxes me and brings me peace. You should try it, Viktor! ::'

Just find a space, free of noises and distractions, even outside on a calm day, and just sit down. Relax. Think of peaceful, calm things that will relieve stress. Light some incense if you want.

It's awesome!

Meditation is not distinctively religious. Although some religions involve meditations, not all meditations involve religion.

I personally found it quite uplifting. O:) I was quite stressed because of homework and exams, and I gave it a shot. I think it works. Can you think about nothing?

So what exactly are you supposed to think of?

That's the point, nothing. Close down your mind. Like I said on my first post in this topic - it's pretty much impossible! :P

Its impossible for a reason. We fear nothing because we cant think of nothing where as something we are familiar with we dont fear as much

You can think of peaceful things. Try thinking of fluffy clouds, or a brilliant blue waterfall with a rainbow.

Actually we meditated in our RE class once.

The teacher, or what would be the "spiritual leader", generally asks you to imagine a story line. It first involves you "leaving" your body. They ask you to imaging that you are looking at yourself, but from above where you are now. Then you slowly imagine zooming out until you can see the whole Earth. For us, we then imagined we were zooming back in onto a beach. Where we were sat, like where we were, under a palm tree. We can then hear generic beach sounds; waves, seagulls, boats in the distance, the sound of a little kid getting a mouthful of sand etc. Then we notice a boat landing ashore, we open our eyes. It's someone we know. They sit next to you and hand you something. They tell you it is important, it should always be on your person. They tell you that it's a spiritual shield/barrier. It can protect you from any harm to come at you. This person then gets up, boards the boat and sails off into the distance. And then, we zoom out - up and away, and zoom back in on ourselves. Then we open our eyes - for real - and realise this gift is still with us.

It's not exactly trying to imagine nothing, but to imagine what is not around you.

THERE IS NO SPOON!11

I didn't find the experience spiritual, per say, but it's a very... lightheaded experience. Like when you feel yourself drifting to sleep, but you are still very concious of what is going on around you.

But the thing is, everything has a shred of something not peaceful in it. If you were trying to think of a waterfall for instance your mind would wander, and maybe you'd think of things like falling down it or something. That's what happens to me, but psychological nothingness doesn't scare me, except when I think about it as a physical thing, nothingness as in space. :uhh:

That's why meditation is so challenging.

Same, I start to think of nice things, but my mind slowly wanders into bad thoughts and worries about the smallest of things that I wouldn't normally even think about.

Which is why listening to music can help stop those bad thoughts, It helps me anyway.

Depending on how long you want to meditate depends on what routine you go through, but just for basics I'd reccomend first finding a quiet place your room/sitting room ect.. sit down on the floor cross legged with your back straight and hands resting loosely on your knees then think and follow your breath, dont attempt to control it, just keep it natural and follow it in and out thinking of your breath and only your breath - then start to extend it, control it don't hold it or stutter it, simply recognise your control over it and fill your lungs to their full capacity. While thats a very brief over view it will get you started, i'm sure however there are meditation groups you could join/excercises you could access.

It's all to do with breathing and being aware of yourself, often a setting may be portrayed to be imagined at first, but then you work up to just breath control and recognition.

Well, when I get depressed, angry, confused, anxious, or frustrated, I meditate. No. I don't contort myself into weird positions, link my fingers together and hum. :P I just close my eyes, take some deep breaths, and clear all the thoughts from my head. I maintain this for as long as possible. It really does help. Even during hard tests. :D

 Nothing wrong with that. It's just most of the time, I don't have the time, flexibility, or space to do that.

I can't do it. I find it fairly easy to physically relax but I rarely mentally switch off. The best way for me to do it is to listen to some relaxing music. But trying to empty my mind has the opposite effect for me.
