Three Big Questions to Ask Yourself

darkmage099

Recommended Posts

1. Who are you?

I am an individual being made up purely of the mind (reason), the spirit (passion) and the body (physical being). My mind and spirit work interdependently, as does the body with the former two, on a separate level. My actions and reactions are the result of the equilibrating forces of the mind and the spirit, in attaining balance.

2. What are you doing here?

I wouldn't have a clue. But since I was given that precious opportunity, there is no other reasonable choice other than to accept it and embrace it wholeheartedly.

3. What is your purpose?

To experience an inner journey of the mind, and to become altered, blessed and enlightened. To search for the genii loci; to achieve a higher level of thinking, of being; to gain wisdom through experience, rather than knowledge from facts.

1. Who are you?

I'm a realist. One more grain in the sand. But - often the one grain more or less does matter so I am not completely insignificant. Just unremarkable in the really big picture.

2. What are you doing here?

Living. Maybe it's a coincidence of some sort of me being a human and not a rabbit or a stone. I do not believe in predefined destiny or some Big Plan God has made for every one of us. And yes, I am not a christian, I'm neopagan. That might answer what I am doing here as well heh.

3. What is your purpose?

Be born, take part in the big cycle of life - thus recreate myself and finally die to make room for others when my functions are depleting. Basically, the point of life is to have kids - keep the cycle going. That's the biological reason. All the ideology around it is just an addition. Entertainment in a way. Which doesn't mean those things aren't important.

Hope it wasn't too confusing. I tried to push my long windy thoughts into small compact sentences which may have caused them to be totally senseless lol.

Yeah I don't think I've seen you agree with one persons beliefs on this thread.
Nadril, that is because almost everyone hasn't shared their beliefs. They are sharing facts and not personal opinions. (well out of the 20 or so that I read.)

Who am I? I am a lost person in a lost world. Looking for a way out of the corruption of society.

Why are you here? I am here because I believe in people and I'm not going to give up on them.

What is your purpose? To help others. Be a friend. Lend a helping hand. Just be there for someone.

I think it's because of the complexity of these questions, and their subjective nature. One person may react by quoting the obvious facts. Another person may delve deeper and write a very spiritual account. As superficial as my answers may be, it's what I believe from my own study of the process / concept of the inner journey.

1. Who are you?---Not your name or subjective opinions about you. Who are you?

A christian. A friend, a son. A thing

2. What are you doing here?---Not at the computer. On Earth. What is the point of you living? Wont there always be someone to take your place?

I don't know, only god does.

3. What is your purpose?---This question is linked to number 2. Pretend there is a man behind you shouting "WHY" after everything you say. Look as deep as you can.

I don't have one, no-one does. If we had a 'purpose' we would know the meaning of life.

That didn't make any sense at all o_O.

The only way that statement would make any sense would be if humans were omniscient...

i before i awnser have a question for you... are you trying to get people depresd about the selves with this tread? serieus question

Nope. Just thought. I don't see a reason to get depressed.

I actually thank them for giving it a shot and not saying "I dont know" or something stupid.

That is a crap [wagon] thing to say. It's not stupid to not know. It's a perfectly legitimate response to the questions, and I believe it answers them fully.

Do not get angry. I know you aren't stupid. I am sure every one could have put they don't know because that is really the truth. However, this does not stop you from giving your thoughts on the issue.

Dargmage, just a question: what are you trying to accomplish here? Really? Somehow i get the feeling you have some more reason than just "finding out". Also, what are *your* answers to these questions?

As for me...I'm sorta in the process of figuring out those answers myself, but if anyone's ever read the Discworld books by Terry Pratchett, I'm pretty much in agreement with Granny Weatherwax on this one.

On the first part, I am not really trying to accomplish anything besides have some thoughts put out on the table.

On the second part, no idea who you are talking about.

Good answers, Plectrum.

'zacly.

My answers? Please, do not flame me for these answers. These are what I have found so far. I know I can go further much like yourselves, but I am working on it.

1. I am my own free will. I am God's creation and God's follower

2. I am seeking the truth about life, and seeking knowledge so I can fulfill my duty to mankind.

3. My purpose is to serve God and do whatever the Hell I think is right!(and hope it is)

I see. So no intentions of persuading people to believe a certain way. Nice to have that cleared up.

On point two: You may want to read them - most bookstores stock them, and they're pretty interesting too. Granny Weatherwax, the character I'm talking about with the interesting philosophy and views on life, appears in, "Equal Rites" , "Weird Sisters" , "Witches Abroad" , "Lords and Ladies" , "Maskerade" , and "Carpe Jugulum".

I meant to say, the only way we can know the meaning of life is if we have a purpose, but as we don't know the meaning of life, its impossible that we can have a purpose.

So, you're saying that if we don't understand something, it can't possibly exist? If we don't fully understand the meaning of life, we have to be right -God forbid if humans were ever wrong-, and there can't be one?

"Hey Bob, I don't know what makes up the universe."

"Neither do I Joe. :-k . It must mean atoms don't exist!"

Still don't see the logic.

1) In the grand scheme of things I am a dot, no, less, I am a billionth of a dot. Nothing I do will ever effect half of the dot. So you could say I was meaning less, you could say everything was meaningless, but if everything is meaningless then what I do is the most important thing in the universe.

2) Living my godless life.

3) As a living being my 'Purpose' is to reproduce. To continue my species by passing on my D.N.A. to the next generation who will pass theres on to the next, and so on, and so on, until our species or the earth's unfortunate, but inevitable end.

Are you lowering yourself to the level of a mere animal?

That seems a lot like Roman philosophy though, except for the nice touch of cynicism. It's basically dividing the body into parts and naming their functions, i.e. labeling us as not one living thing but a sum of parts, which is false, or at least bad, thinking. (The basic philosophy is eye=for seeing, ears=for hearing, sex organs= for reproducing).

Do you really believe that if you have a purpose, it is to be nothing but to be a worthless carrier of genes?

Who sais being a carrier of genes is worthless? :P But I see what you're saying. I think purpose should have a biological and an emotional aspect.

As you may have been able to tell I am an atheist and as such I have a bit of a problem with words like 'Purpose' seeing as I don't believe in destiny or any larger laid out plans for the universe, so the only real 'Purpose' for us is to pass on our genes, and if it weren't for 'worthless carriers of genes' nothing would evolve, and if nothing ever evolved then we would still be floating in primordial ooze.

Just because you're an atheist doesn't mean you can't have a purpose :-s .

Basically, you consider you and everyone around you to be nothing but a worthless pile of meat, built only to create more worthless piles of meat? You're no more significant than an insect in your eyes? Get past that ideology before you kill yourself, please.

As Warrior said, biology is a part of it, but in all honesty, I wouldn't consider it anywhere close to one of the biggest parts.

I'm saying that I don't believe in a preordained destiny or grander purpose for every living being. I suppose what I'm trying to say is that life is short and we only get one shot at it so stop worrying about your purpose, your destiny, your worth and just have a little fun, as they say "Don't take life too seriously. You'll never get out alive."

Then, in your opinion, we're meant to live life happily, to live it to the fullest. Our purpose is to enjoy life.

Now we're getting somewhere.
