Does Jagex have a backup business plan?

Featured Replies

Lets face the reality guys. Jagex does have it going good for them at the moment.. but a few years from now? Eventually those "subscriber" numbers will start declining. Eventually players will have hit the peak of the game or want something new.

What do you think Jagex will do? Should they plan for Runescape 3 and a new engine? I'm highly positive that computers these days can handle any new engine that can be dished out.

I'm sure they have an "exit strategy" but there's no way Runescape is going to be stopping any time soon. Membership subscriptions are expanding if not stable. The boys(and girls?) at Jagex are doing very well and probably will be for quite a few years.

I do think that eventually, Jagex will die out as all companies do. Eventually, Microsoft will die out, and Nintendo, and other major companies.

Not if they keep with current technology and providing excellent services :-s

Is the East India Trading Company still around? They kept up as long as they could.

Heh, well I suppose they didn't keep up well enough. But Jagex is basically the top dog in the world of "Browser Based" MMORPG's. Look at it this way. What did the world of MMORPG's start with? MUD's (Text based RPG's you could play online) then came more graphic oriented games. MUD's basically fell off the top because of the fact that their technology wasn't up to date and a newer and better thing came out.

Jagex has shown their ability to jump out of a slump (if you consider RSC a slump which I don't but it better emphasis my point). When they created RS2 it was their foray into the "modern" MMOG's. Now they are in three dimensions they have the most advanced Java software that is out there, they've developed their own coding language just to be able to work more efficiently.

Now there is a war call being played out on the horizon. A new game by the people who've made games such as City of Heroes and Guild Wars (NC Soft) is coming out in the near future which features breath-taking visuals (for a free game). It's most definitely geared towards older players BUT it will still draw a great deal of Jagex's target audience away from them. Their only possible response you might wonder? To advance their own game through high level content, darker/scarier graphics(as not all older gamers want to see "blood" splotches that have numbers on them, they'd rather see flesh wounds and severed body parts), and a smarter way of doing business.

Overall yes the East India Trading Company is no longer in existence. Jagex does have it's own rivals to work against but I believe and hope (on account of the five years I've put into my character) that Jagex will have the staying power that will keep it going for year after year.

EDIT: I forgot one thing, I have to mention that this new game I mentioned looks great and all but it's got an all too Adventure Quest feel to it so I may get a free character on it but I'd probably not want to pay for it. One thing I love about Jagex is that you'll never lose your character to inactivity. I could be gone for a year and so long as I remember my password it will still exist. They expect people to come back after long breaks, it's not healthy to be playing the same game day in, day out as you need variability in your life or you'll go crazy!

Jagex are making a new game AFAIK, so some new subscribers will go there aswell as some RSers will play both. So if they need it they'll have more coming in from the other game(s).

this game is amazingly addictive... and boring. their plan is probably ride it out til the end.

Maybe they'll try to make the graphics better, and the RS3 idea I agree too.

they wil have to do a WoW on that because runescape is an internet game and internet games dont have the graphic power, they will have to intdroduce a disc

Nintendo has been in business Since the 1850's. Not necessarily the best example.

What Nintendo did in 1850? oO

Runescape is ages from dying out. I would not be worried at all about the end for a long time. Runescape is actually comparably still in it's infancy, believe it or not, or at least in teenagehood. It has a lot of potential, and this is great because the internet speeds are increasing and so are the updates. Runescape has not been completely explored, recently we discovered another, larger, planet in the Runescapian Solar System (Large Orrey, POH) and of course, there is scaperune. By no ways is it going to end yet. Jagex will make an escape plan when the suitable time comes (in other words, the player numbers peak).

Playing cards. In fact, until the 1970's when Nintendo began to move into video games they made the playing cards that you could buy at the Disney parks.

it's hard to compare RS to these hunge companies i think, because these companies have different products, thus different standards. However the concept remains the same, keeping up with modern trends. So far, its doing fine..and i think it's expected that they keep it up for years to come.

Is the East India Trading Company still around? They kept up as long as they could.

American History FTW!

finally back in the game! send me a message, all my old friends quit

AFAIK? Whats that? :uhh:

Does that mean when the RS2 Beta was launched it was going through puberty? The body is changing so many different things going on in your head, you never feel right in your own skin, that pretty much describes the RS2 Beta and RS2 in it's first few months.

its not usually a matter of if there going to die out but when there going to die out

every company dies at some time and its just a matter of time before jagex dies out, but i think there emergency plan would be to release rs3

326death326 is banned~~~EVERYONE ADD MY NEW MAIN "Y0uknowwho" (first o is a zero)

they will eventually create a new game with warcraft graphics. its not computer speeds, internet speeds are the problem, as people who still have dial up internet conections would make for extremely slow download times every time they updated the game. they'll get there, you just have to be pacient

Oh I thought it was a game that Jagex is going to release

I think people here are severely underestimating the vast empire that Jagex has built; named RuneScape.

There are hundreds of thousands of F2P people, with the number increasing. Many of them will, eventually, get to members.

Jagex has weekly updates - something most online games do not have.

Andrew and Paul have made enough money where they will never have to work another day in their lives so I dont think they are too worried
