shivers21
LOL, is probaly the most usued expression, but only 1% is usued for Laughing Out Loud. And LMAFO? Is that even meen anything??? there are hundreds of little saying pepole use, ROTFLOL, LMAFO, ROFL, BRB HYN, G2G, to name a few. then there is the ones created by the games, like in RuneScape (I know its off topic dont report please) like DDS, R2H, DT, P(+)... I could go on for 3 fourm pages on all of them! The point is, people are forgetting to speak (and type) and are starting to use expressions on real life! (there ok on the computer but talking to your mom, thats going a bit to far.) Like my friend, We're playing Lego ( Lego is so much fun!) and my friend says: BRB guys i need to go to the bathroom. Thats just a little bit over the edge on using abreviations. Talking to friends on Msn or on RuneScape, Everyone usues them (I'm not saying its wrong, but i belive were usuing them to often.) almost in every sentance, LOL thats nice, ROTFL you died on THAT level? and i'm SICK and TIRED of it. Maby, we could have sundays as "no abreviations day" and no one could use the words LOL, DDS, and all of the other ones out there. then there's words like Mith. insted of mithiril, and the one that gets me everytime, and the one i will never use, is W/E in sted of Whatever. It drives me insane that people do that! it dosn't make it eiser to read, and makes your writting look sloppy and ulgly. Imagin using Abriviations like W/E on a english writting paper and handing it in to your teacher. Rebdragon
My sis does that a bit, but it's usually jokingly, and she only does "brb", sometimes "lol". She accents all the letters when she says it (I have no idea what the term for it is, but it's just humorous the way she says it I guess, almost mocking chatspeak), so I don't really have a problem with it. gonpost
A good replacement for the over-used lol would be "heh" or "hehe" or "haha", as in something that's amusing but not worth actually laughing out loud over. Otherwise, I tend to agree with you...although I have to say the word shortenings do have a purpose. So yeah... ttyl lol. w/e :) Runescape Name: "unbug07"Expand your mind. Harrington
I talked with a mate about this recently. I believe it's a simply natural progression of our language. I mean, language changes constantly. You just have to read an old Shakespear book to see how much English has changed in the last few centuries (to the point where it's difficult to read). Even reading a newspaper article from the middle of the last century, you can see massive differencies. It comes as no surprise to me then, that our language is continuing to change to meet our ever changing world. It's not necessarily a bad thing. I wonder how many of us would recognise english were we to timewarp say, 500 years into the future lol.
pompey_spud
I personally don't mind it, as Harrington says, languages evolve, and this is simply what it is. I also think it's rather ironic you complain of things being hard to read. :P

pompey_spud
You press the 'quote' button to the top right of the message you wish to quote. I said it was ironic, blah blah blah, because although you steer clear of using text language, your grammar/typing etc aren't the best... I trust you understand irony? Zonorhc
My friends and I say lol in real life. Sometimes, we use rofl as well, and the occasional lmao or lolomgpwnt or wtfhax. It makes for lively conversation. Granted, none of us actually TYPE like that, so I guess we have to compensate for it somehow. Lionheart_0
Lol on the computer now means something is mere funny, and takes the place of a meaning, not a physical thing. I think its a good thing to have because it allows people to know the feeling of others. It would be nice to have something for sarcasm, but seems the only thing we have is [/sarcasm]. there is nothing wrong with having short terms, just as long as people understand them. I think most people that complain about short terms are the older people who don't understand what they mean. They then take the ideology "If i don't know it, it must be evil!". If people actually took the time to learn such things, then it wouldn't be a problem. As for real life? I would only consider certain things acceptable. I do say BRB a lot, and its just because im used to it. I also think it sounds cool, no matter what someone else says. Saying lol though is not a cool thing though. Lol represents a feeling or laughter, and should be kept for where people don't understand it. IRL, people can show their emotions, and should use that ability. Sig by IkuraiYour Guide to Posting! darkmage099
I think the reason "lol" is overused because there is nothing to symbolize a chuckle. If someone said something remotely funny, I say "lol". Haha and hehe are basically the same thing. Its denotation is that you are laughing out loud; but really, you are just representing some sort of amusement. Trix.--quit WoW as of 12/07Thank you 4be2jue for the wonderful sig and avatar! You probably need to take some advice from that English teacher or something, seriously, grammar and spelling count on the internet the same as using abbreviations only when needed do. Anyways, if anything, abbreviations like "lol" and "brb" have become pointless because they're so overused. They've become meaningless because people actually don't put any meaning into them when they say it. I mean sure, they could type "lol" in a game, and be sitting there with a frown on their face. It's things like that that really make them pointless, not using them in real life (which I have no objection to...my friends say "lawl" and "rawful" (pronounced the way that i've just spelled them) in real life jokingly). shivers21
I̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢m not saying that you shouldn̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t use abbreviations; I use ones like OMG and WTF but using them in real life, lawl is ok but saying O M G instead of oh my god is just really stupid. It̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s mostly that people who type LOL don̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t mean it, or don̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t mean it as laughing out loud. Why not type haha or hehe in stead. Mostly, LOL is for anything funny. But some people add it to their sentences like: Yeah, I went to the store with Jimmy LOL. That̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s what drives me nuts! Korla
how's my writting now that i have a bit more time to write? Your "writting" is as bad as ever. But it's not just spelling, it's basically formulating sentences that convey what you mean in a clear way, that's your problem atm anyway, and it makes your longer posts hard to follow and more importantly one loses interest. Even though the topic might be good to start with. What I think about this is that, as have been said already, the world is changing, in the same way as it ever has, it's moving at a faster pace and one needs to be able to speak quicker. It's always a younger generation's slang that is picked up and turned into mainstream language, and always an older generation that is against what is, in their eyes, a very bad way of doing things. It's the way of life in my mind. I am as disturbed by the use of such slang as you are, but I am content in complaining to peers and not worrying too much about the so called "degeneration" of young people's ability to speak complete sentences. Also, you had a complaint about people writing LOL when they don't really mean it, so what? They could write HAHAHA and not mean it aswell, and it's the exact same thing non-meaning wise. It's just not an argument against the use of LOL and such abbreviations, but a complete different topic. Did I mention I'm studying critical thinking? Oh, I'm gonna have some fun in a few weeks breaking people's arguments with theories about argumentation and stuff :P A lot of people seem to use "lol" as a form of "ok". This I think is pretty interesting, though, how it now means a different thing. I think that when LOL stopped meaning so much cause of its overuse and was used instead to mean something like: "I care enough to type something back", is when I stopped using it, or maybe that was around the same time as I started speaking to people outside of WoW again (I.e. swedish people I knew IRL). Anyhow, that's the actual loss of meaningg right there.
shivers21
Ok, people could write HAHAHA and not mean it, but LOL is just OVERUSUED and lost its meaning a long time ago. You̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢re just against people who think using things like LOLMGPWNT is silly and annoying. Just because you know all the abbreviations and what they mean doesn̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t mean we all do! I have a hard time reading what people type when they say: LOLMGPWNT that n00b pwned me in the DA, I lost my DDS! In stead of: That n00b killed me in the duel arena, I lost my dragon dagger! Which is easier to read? The 2nd one right? OF COURSE! No one will actually read or acknowledge my post because your all to busy complaining about my bad writing, that I think is perfectly fine! {DeviantART}{Last.Fm}{Join Sublime GFX, great community for artists!}Back to RuneScape, Again.Avatar by Brian The Great
