20-Nov-2012 - Evolution of Combat: Now Live!
To be very clear, when I am talking about letting people get away with bugs, I am not talking about my herald cape breaking when I leave the dueling arena. I am talking about things like pest control, where the game was unplayable and this was immediately obvious on the first run through, or temple trekking which still isn't fixed, and contains monsters that were obviously not converted to beta stats. Or dungeoneering which was a similar mess. Or farming where all the watercans were broken. These aren't obscure bugs that require special circumstances or hardware combinations to trigger. These bugs had to be known upon release because they they jump out and slap you as soon as you try to use that content. The only way for them to be unknown is to not test that content at all.

That misses a pretty important point: There are billions of computer combinations in hardware and software and not enough manpower in the world to make a product work equally as well on all of them. And the software industry isn't alone in this, the pharmaceutical corporations have the same issue: No two people are alike. So instead of holding products until they work on 100% of people with no side effects, which is impossible, they put it out after it is effective with a certain percentage. It can be dangerous for some people for any number of reasons from allergies to sensitivities to ingredients, or not work at all for others, or be completely effective. As I said, I understand that bugs will never go away. There is nothing we can do about that and I accept that without argument. However, it has become a startlingly common practice to release software that literally does not work on any computer (especially in the gaming industry). I can only assume they get the game almost ready, and then rather than spend on a lot of QA, they use the first buyers as beta testers and release patches. With consoles now having internet access, they do it on consoles now too because they can. On consoles in particular there is no excuse for a game being unbeatable on launch because of bugs, because you know exactly what hardware it has to work with. And it's funny you mention pharmaceutical companies, because I thought about including them. But they know that their drugs wont work on everyone, and we know this too. When I try out a new drug, I expect that it might not work or I might react badly. When I buy a game, I expect it to not contain game breaking bugs that could only not be found by not testing.

One addendum I would like to add is that the EoC will be finished up much faster (or should be) as the live game. It both forces the issue, and makes more resources available, both by freeing up some of the people tied up by running to concurrent versions of the game, and because Jagex will likely throw additional people at it if they can in the short run to try and get the game to acceptable levels of completion. Ideally, this would happen in beta, where they would simply pause everything for a week or two and do this and then hand it over, but that is not the world we live in.

How many fans can I plug into this PSU?
I have to ask. Would it not be cheaper and massively more effective to buy a couple desk fans? I just can't see a computer fan being able to move enough air to be effective at more than a foot away, which means that it would take two just to handle your blocker and trapper. Your looking at 2 more for your skates, 1 or 2 for your helmet because of it's size, and one for your neckguard. If you plan on fanning your pants or chest protector, that's like 6 each, and another for your cup. On the other hand, you could probably get everything but the pads, chest protector, and pants in the range of a couple desk fans (one if you put it on swivel), and those things should dry just fine if you take them out of your bag. Also, one more idea if your house isn't totally electric heating. What we did for my golie gear was build a rack by the furnace. The big stuff hung on rack, and everything else sat on shelves made with wire mesh to let the hot air rise through them. The extra heat from the furnace helped dry things out faster.

I'd do it for you if I had any idea myself  Sadly, my knowledge of scripting is old and largely forgotten, and was never that good to begin with :(

I feel that much of the problem is conflicting goals. I'm sure the people actually deveoping the game knew full well that it wasn't ready, and I'm sure they made this abundantly clear to their boss(es). I'm not a huge fan of dilbert comics because I think they are wacky and cute. I am a huge fan because they depict things that actually happen. It's funny because it's true. It was pointed out before that the beta can't have been cheep. Specifically, even a small team is a lot of man hours that are not working on content that is actively making you money. It is an investment in your future, and pretty much the virtual equivalent of R&D. At some point, the costs were going to exceed the expected return, and so they would have been very anxious to make it the main game before that happened. Or maybe it did pass that point, and the executives saw that it was starting to torch their money, and forced it out then. It should also be noted that the computer software industry is the only industry we actively allow to get away with things like this. No other industry is allowed to sell things that don't work on a routine business while still being allowed to get repeat customers. And this is our fault, society as a whole. At some point we decided it was okay for a game developer to release a game for a console that literally doesn't have the hardware to run it properly, but if that brand new steak knife fails after 3 days use your going to flip out and take that sucker right back to the store. I'm not sure what went wrong, and I understand that there will always be bugs, but at some point we decided that it was okay to sell us stuff that was obviously broken or incomplete, as long as it's a computer program of some sort. The software industry knows this, and they have taken this concept and are now sprinting away with it as fast as they can.

The Back Room
Hahaha, that sounds absolutely miserable. Have we actually done anything with solar sails yet though? I'm not even aware of the concept being put through a practical test, though admittedly I am not exactly all up to date on space propulsion. Actually, I only found out about the nuclear thermal rockets a little while ago. I don't suppose they actually understand how a rocket works? Go to your happy place Mather

Tip.it Monster Weakness Database
The crew is adding this information in as they update the bestiary. For example [monster=923] was updated a little while ago. The submit correction links have fields for all the information we currently need. If you would like to create a sister thread to this in the bestiary corrections subforum with your template, that could be helpful though, for those that really want to use the forums. I'll leave this as a discussion thread though, as there is merit in all this info collecting talk |^_^| However, all corrections not submitted through the site should be posted into the website corrections and updates area of the forums.

Botting/Botwatch in the Evolution of Combat Discussion
Point of interest: Bot watch has been partially online since the release of botany bay (this is the program that finds the bots that go there). I am under the impression they are still trying to iron out some of the wrinkles, as the program has not proven to be entirely reliable, and the developers of the bots it does target are naturally already fighting back.

Well Known RWT'rs banned.
n64, they are trying to find an automated system that can handle the botting solution. It's not an easy problem to solve. You can't just ask the players computer if there is a human sitting in front of it. It doesn't know, and even if it did, computers can be programmed to lie. Warning: Speculation on how the Ban Dragon works Jagex seem to be taking the anti virus approach right now. They write definitions, or profiles, of behavior that demonstrates someone is botting. When the servers find someone who matches a profile, the servers ban them. The problem is that just like computer viruses, the people making them keep changing them to change their electronic signature and behavior, so that they no longer match a known profile. If you know how the bot works, you should always be able to write a profile to define and find it, but you need the bot script first, and it means that making a new bot that uses a new method not yet seen will work until Jagex can add or modify a profile to catch it. The server also does not have unlimited resources. Checking accounts takes time. A filter is pretty easy, because everything it needs to know is in each line of text you write. Behavior takes time. There is the so called 'green mile' between lumbridge castle and the ge on world 1. Most of the auto typers trying to get to the ge follow this path, and most don't make it (the ban hand normally crushes them around the windmill). If they make it to the ge, then they start advertising. If it is a method that the system is set to identify, it will eventually destroy them, but it's not instant. If they live through the green mile, they will get at least a few lines off. Also, Jagex selling gold is very different. RWT gold still comes from the game, not thin air. Making large ammounts of gold out of thin air would cause inflation. It's the same reason countries don't just print as much money as they need and instead take on debt. There is a lower floor to how gold farmers can sell gold, because running the bots isn't free, and there is a finite limit on how fast you can farm gold. At some point it would cease to be proffitable. If Jagex were to undercut that point, gold would be so cheep it would probably drive RuneScape to hyperinflation, and they'd probably end up adding a new currency (say a platinum coin that represents a billion gold ones). Many of the higher end items would also become disproportionately expensive, rising in value faster than the inflation rate, as people with literally unlimited funds drive prices up. You also have to understand that even if Jagex just went competative, pricing at or even just above the gold farmers, it would still cause problems because more people would buy gold, magnifying the current effects. There are plenty of people who wont buy gold out of fear or distrust (fear of getting banned or robbed), or simply because it's against the rules. The more people who buy, the more will consider it just to stay competative.

Some buttons not working
You could write a script that looks for the code on their site that chrome can't read and replaces it with some that it can. You just add the script as an addon (I have one that turns qfcs on the rsof into hyperlinks).

Full List of New Items?
I can make a list of all the items we add to our database from the EoC release to present. Once we have had the time to track down and add everything, it would essentially be the list your looking for. It will take some time to do this though. Right now the crew is putting a massive effort into updating all the items we already have listed. EDIT: Taking a look at this, a lot of items were added during the beta, so a full list is going to include other stuff, since there is no way for me to filter it down to only the beta items. EDIT 2: Took a look. It's not complete yet, but this might get you started. [hide] Items - Add Item - Grifolic gloves Items - Add Item - Mystic shield Items - Add Item - Grifolic kiteshield Items - Add Item - Batwing shield Items - Add Item - Splitbark shield Items - Add Item - Batwing legs Items - Add Item - Batwing hood Items - Add Item - Spider wand Items - Add Item - Imphide wand Items - Add Item - Splitbark wand Items - Add Item - Grifolic wand Items - Add Item - Mystic wand Items - Add Item - Bat wand Items - Add Item - Wizard wand Items - Add Item - Virtus wand Items - Add Item - Ahrim's wand Items - Add Item - Batwing gloves Items - Add Item - Ganodermic gloves Items - Add Item - Imphide gloves Items - Add Item - Spider silk hood Items - Add Item - Spider silk robe bottom Items - Add Item - Spider silk robe top Items - Add Item - Spider silk gloves Items - Add Item - Spider silk boots Items - Add Item - Imphide robe top Items - Add Item - Imphide hood Items - Add Item - Imphide robe bottom Items - Add Item - Imphide boots Items - Add Item - Carapace torso Items - Add Item - Armadyl crossbow Items - Add Item - Saradomin's hiss Items - Add Item - Saradomin's murmur Items - Add Item - Saradomin's whisper Items - Add Item - Ward of subjection Items - Add Item - Boots of subjection Items - Add Item - Gloves of subjection Items - Add Item - Gown of subjection Items - Add Item - Garb of subjection Items - Add Item - Hood of subjection Items - Add Item - Armadyl boots Items - Add Item - Pernix boots Items - Add Item - Ganodermic boots Items - Add Item - Pernix gloves Items - Add Item - Virtus boots Items - Add Item - Torva gloves Items - Add Item - Torva boots Items - Add Item - Armadyl buckler Items - Add Item - Bandos helmet Items - Add Item - Batwing torso Items - Add Item - Batwing feet [/hide] Later on today I might look at writting a program to remove everything but the item names from the list. I figure I'll try to maintain it, and I'd rather not do it myself (also something to do).

Action Bar setup for melee
I try to aim for 4 basic abilities, 2 thresholds, and a single ultimate. I leave the rest of the bar for whatever I need, such as food and home teleport. You might also want a space available to clear your inventory of accumulated unwanted items. For melee, you have the nice bonus of being able to pick from attack and strength. Just be careful not to pick duplicate abilities (some abilities cause others to go into cooldown mode), which is only a problem for melee. Also, one of your basics should be the lowest level basic (3 sec coolddown). This is your default ability, and if you use it every other time, it will gain you momentum at the best pace.

Today...
Albel! Welcome back.] Today I disasemble my favourites list on youtube and send the songs (it's all songs) to their own playlists. I liked having it all in one long string since it tracks my musical interests going back a few years quite nicely, but it's been a long time since it worked. Now it plays maybe the first 12 songs, then it gets into a loop where it jumps around between a few of the older ones. It's time for the list to work again. Besides, I'll still have a general record.

20-Nov-2012 - Evolution of Combat: Now Live!
I noticed the I'm training ranged right now and trying to figure that out as well. It looks like F2P'ers will have to search around to find what the best new monsters are for melee, ranged, and magic (I'm assuming this is based on what monsters have weaknesses to those things). Protip: From my samples, Momentum gives you the same or greater xp/hr, so don't bother spamming abilities if you're just training. Noticed that too. I think it would be quite a strain to hammer the abilities out fast enough to beat momentum. It's pretty good. The abilities are really more suited for the bosses and pvp I think (and dungeoneering since it would be difficult to get an ultimate off).

20-Nov-2012 - Evolution of Combat: Now Live!
I feel like there is something wrong with magic auto attacks. They are...very strong. I was hitting 1300 with bloodfire blitz I think (the stronger 1 target spell) in auto attack. Momentum didn't make it that much stronger (up to about 1800). The sad thing is that those hits were often putting my abilities to shame. That said, mage is kind of fun, though having less abilities than melee is a bit annoying for me. Not please about apparently doing the academy again. That wasn't the deal, and its really boring if you already know what to do.

Two points. Bethesda is infamous for considering incredibly buggy software 'ready to ship' when it clearly isn't. They are also notorious for not fixing most of them, and taking a very long time to deal with the ones they do address. Also, if you put the action bar down, you can type without hitting enter. You just can't talk normally while using abilities, or while using the action bar to train (such as by dropping). And yes, there are a lot of bugs in this, and obvious ones, considering how long it was in beta. Either no one ever beta played temple trekking (or at least didn't report on it), or they didn't fix the reports they got, because I'm pretty sure it's not supposed to work like this (some of the monsters haven't even been converted to beta stats I think, far to little hp).

Runs to go do all the Temple Trekking. Not kidding either. I've always wanted to do some, but the game chews me up and spits me back out somehow.

Today...
It didn't solve my problem. Figured. I don't think it will be fixed until I finally get that wireless extender, because our new router kind sucks in the signal strength department (last one was a beast). Still, it's good to know how to do that. I realized today that the Enhanced Edition of Baldur's Gate comes out in 8 days. Very excited for this game, have a lot of fond memories from the original set, looking forward to seeing their updated versions.

The make x interface is changed. Momentum works quite nicely. I find the abilities get old pretty fast in pvm. Going to try it out in dunge later. I also have to laugh at fire giants, which now punch you with ranged damage (weak to slash), presumably using the "I'm not touching you" technique until you get annoyed enough to take damage.

Makes sense, seeing as they do half damage. And I got the patch notes in.
