  1. I did correct a few factual mistakes, lol.
  2. For those who weren't around at the time: on November 14, 2001, Jagex made it so that we could only use certain vocabulary when playing RuneScape. For example, my name became "If 64". This update caused many people to seriously consider quitting RuneScape! However, Andrew realized that this just made things worse, so he removed this system. I just found out that RS isn't the only game to have used this system. Disney's Virtual Magic Kingdom (a.k.a. Virtual Magic Kingdom) (nowhere as popular as RS) also uses this system. example: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1060308 I don't play it, but I've read the forums and it seems that people don't seem to complain much. I guess it's because that since it was always like that, people have gotten used to it. As far as I remember, it was possible to type certain symbols in RS, and I tihnk it might be the same in VMK. Does anyone remember to what extent symbols could be used in RS? If we could use them as we wished, perhaps some people could have communicated "normally" by using some sort of dialect of Morse code, lol.
  3. This is based on a classic fairy tale. The Queen Bee synopsys: A mysterious enchantment has turned every inhabitant of a castle into stone! Only a kind adventurer can resolve the situation. requirements: none Start: Talk to the king at the castle. After chatting for a while, he will tell you about his three sons. The king tells the player that the two older brothers are often up to mischief, while the youngest one was well behaved. Just then, the younger brother would suddenly interrupt the conversation and report that the older brothers are planning to cause trouble for the forest animals. The younger brother would say that he saw the older brothers tearing up an ant hill. When the player gets there, it would be too late. However, the player can repair the ant hill with fifteen pieces of wet clay. Just as the player is done, the younger brother would then report that his brothers were setting traps for ducks, and would tell the player to disarm them. The player can disarm the trap by clipping the wires with shears. Finally, the younger brother would be horrified that the older brothers were burning a bee hive alive. To save the bees, the player would have to use a bucket of water with the fire beneath the hive. [insert cut-scene] Later, the three brothers would meet at a castle far larger than their own. The strange thing would be that there were no people there, except for a strange old man. The player has to talk to the old man. There, (s)he learns that the people of the castle had been petrified by an unknown enemy. If the player could restore them, they would be greatly rewarded. But here's the catch. There are three tasks that, when completed, will restore the castle. However, anyone who starts but fails would be turned into stone! The tasks are: 1. retrieve the youngest princess' 1,000 pearls 2. retrieve the youngest princess' key from a nearby lake 3. pick the youngest of three sleeping look-alike princesses For the first task, the players would speak to the ants, who he had saved. For the second task, the player has to speak to the ducks. For the third task, the player learns that the youngest one had eaten honey. The player has to talk to the queen bee for assistance. [insert cut-scene] The youngest brother marries the youngest princess. Quest complete! rewards: 1. 1 QP 2. 5,000 gp from the old man, on behalf of the castle's people 3. an uncut diamond from the youngest son [4. possible future quests that involve the castle's people]
  4. While RuneScape is designed to be somewhat educational, it obviously cannot replace normal education. However, we can wonder what thigns RuneScape teaches us. According to the Parents' Guide, RuneScape teaches us the problem solving, how to be safe online, and the importance of security. However, RuneScape also indirectly teaches us some academic subjects. So far, the ones I've found are: Statistics In regression analysis, we determine the correlation (shown by the correlation constant r) between two sets of data, such as the fishing and cooking experience of players in a random sample. In this case, we can expect a positive correlation, and if we plot the cooking and fishing experiences, we can expect the plot to somewhat resemble a straight line. We can use probability theory to estimate the number of successful times we smelt iron. For example, since iron has a 50% chance of filing, the rms standard deviation of the box model is 0.5. Due to the square root law, if we smelt 10,000 pieces of iron ore, we can expect to be successful 5,000 ̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâñ 50 times. The 50 is the standard error. Due to the normal curve, we would successfully smelt 5,000 ̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâñ 50 iron 68% (1 standard error) of the time, and 5,000 ̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâñ 100 (2 standard errors) 95% of the time. In other words, if you smelt 100 sets of 10,000 iron ores, you'll get between 4,900 and 5,100 successful smelts on about 95 of those sets. Operations research Operations research is the process of maximizing benefits while dealing with constraints. For example, here's a RuneScape implementation of the knapsack problem. Suppose that you're a free version pker who is planning to PK archers. Suppose that you want rune armor with the bets range defense, but you only have a limited amount of cash. You have a limited budget of 100,000 gp. rune chain: 35k, 65 ranged defense rune legs: 50k, 49 ranged defense rune large: 30k, 30 ranged defense rune kite: 50k, 46 ranged defense rune medium: 10k, 22 ranged defense rune square: 25k, 38 ranged defense The rune medium and large are mutually exclusive, as are the rune square and rune kite. So we define 6 variables, x1 to x6. x1 = 1 if the player buys the rune chain, 0 otherwise, and so on. We must then solve the following linear programming problem (in thousands of gp, if applicable). maximize z = 65x1 + 49x2 + 30x3 + 46x4 + 22x5 + 38x6 s.t. (subject to) 35x1 + 50x2 + 30x3 + 50x4 + 10x5 + 25x6 ̢̢̮ââ¬Ã°Ãâä 100 (gp constraint) x4 + x6 ̢̢̮ââ¬Ã°Ãâä 1 (shield constraint) x3 + x5 ̢̢̮ââ¬Ã°Ãâä 1 (helmet constraint) x1 to x6 = 0 or 1 (I might be wrong on the mutual exclusion part.) As we can see, RuneScape does have pretty interesting academic problems! If anyone knows any more, feel free to post!
  5. I found this link on another forum. Science-oriented folks (like me) might like this! It's also a great way to kill time. :) Link Fixed (BBCode doesnt use quotes) - Albosky
  6. I did a check, and Jagex indeed blocks account creatoin if you recently tried to sign up as under 13. It's done by cookies, and not by IP, because I was still able to access the account creation options after changing browsers (IE -> FireFox).
  7. As we know, Jagex has added a 13+ age requirement for RuneScape, and have updated its TOS and privacy policy. So far, the 13+ age requirement is only required by the United States (COPPA). Basically, on sites where personal information is collected, children under 13 must have parents' permission. Many sites opt to disallow all <13 users, as otherwise that would prove to be too much paperwork, especially when proof of parental consent is involved. As a British company, Jagex is not bound by COPPA, but they have decided to enact the 13+ rule anyway. So here are my questions for discussion: 1. Has anyone ever been banned for being proven to be underage? 2. Would bad-faith users try to get people banned by attempting to impersonate their victims' parents? Discuss.
  8. Note: This is not indended to start a pointless f2p v. p2p flame war. ---- Don't get me wrong, Jagex is a game company. As a company, the primary function of Jagex is to make money. However, does anyone else get the feeling that money is all that Jagex cares about nowadays? Jagex has stated that members are supposed to get very godo customer support. Yet, some members with good reputations across the RS community have been falsely banned, and all they get is an automated response on their appeal. I feel that Jagex's message is "We don't care about your problems. As long as we get your money, you're expendable." There's a very similar thing on message boards. The rules say that you may not discuss other online games, and you may not say that other games are better than RS. True, the official forums are privately-owned forums, and Jagex has every right to do what they wish. However, in prohibiting these discussions for fear of competition, Jagex is acting very narrow-minded. Jagex is implying that those who think there are better games than RuneScape should be lined up against the wall and shot. Face it Jagex, there will always be people who think otherwise. By comparision, many forums of other companies, gaming or not (3D Realms, Wicked Lasers, etc) allow the discussion of competitors' products. In the old days, the forums and polls were free. After Jagex removed them, they were put back, but for members only. I can understand this for the message boards - members are usually more serious players, and are less likely to post abusively. Jagex claims that the polls are members' only is to prevent people from ballot stuffing. If Jagex truly wants to prevent that, they would use level requirement s instead. Finally, Jagex has said that the profit from members would go back into improving RuneScape. From the beginning of 2001 to early 2002 (about a year), Jagex has released 17 quests, all before members. But now, it's 2006, and Jagex has many times more staff than it did in 2001, and you'd expect the rate of total updates to go up significantly. I don't see it. In those 6 years, we got a bit over 100 quests. It's fairly consistent with 6 * 17 = 102, which is pretty close. You'd expect much more, now that Jagex is much bigger. Any thoughts?
  9. Off-topic: Jagex used to have a description of Runescript at http://runescape.com/runescript.html or something, but they have since long removed it. :(
  10. Jagex banning for that is pretty stupid. A person reporting for that is even more stupid.
  11. I wonder how this guy does it: http://forum.tip.it/viewtopic.php?t=548910
  12. It's definitely possible for free users to get rich extremely fast if they're good merchants.
  13. I've thought about this problem as well, but I don't tihnk there's any correlation between how good your rewards are and how long you let your clue sit.
  14. I don't know what Jagex iss thinking sometimes. Punishing legit players won't make RuneScape a better place.
  15. This? http://www.amazon.com/Official-Handbook ... 44?ie=UTF8
  16. I originally got this idea during a family trip to Hawaii where I saw Hawaiian natives climb trees to get coconuts. However, coconuts have already been implemented into RS, so this idea is a bit different. --- Some places in RS shoud have very tall coconut trees. They require level 75 agility to climb, and failing will cause the player to lose 30%-50% health (each successful climb and pick gives 80 agility exp). Now these coconuts have been undisturbed since they are so hard to get, so they should have higher qualities and more uses. Players would also need a knife in their inventory in order to cut these tougher coconuts from trees. Players would be able to get a "quality coconut". To use the coconut, players must use the coconut with shredding [bleep]es found in tropical villages. This gives a "quality coconut shell" and coconut fronds. Fronds can be used with a needle and thread to make coconut frond hats (level 50 crafting, 80 exp) that give no bonus and are merely for looks. Quality coconut shells can be cracked with a hammer (requires level 30 strength) and give 5 strength exp. Those shells would be able to fill 3 vials instead of one, or can be drunk to heal 15 hits. Players should also be able to make coconut cream pies. Players would need a pie shell, an empty coconut shell, and a knife. Players can cut the coconut and get coconut and get coconut white. They would also need cream. The pie would require level 75 cooking and heal 10 hits per half.
  17. Also, enchanted bolts are untradable, even though they're not quest items.
  18. I'll have to admit - all this time, I thought that the abyss itself was level 5 wilderness until recently.
  19. Anyone remember these? Jagex probably won't post similar announcements again, lol. With so many players, Jagex would be accused of favoritism if they posted these now. Also, this would probably encourage players to break the now-existing rule 13.
  20. Anyone remember this dreadful update? November 14, 2001.
  21. Those of you who were here at the time of the RS2 beta may remember those bugs! <-- Anyone remember how much? <-- heh <-- dang... <-- my favorite! <-- if only Jagex didn't fix that one...
  22. After spending some time thinking about skill capes, I've come up with some suggestions about them, and special effects they give. Some skill capes should also be avialable for free users. Like barrows items, the capes should only give the bonus when you wear the hood as well. All capes should have the same stats unless otherwise specified. Finally, I know that some people will complain that the bonuses are overpowered, but when you spend so much time and effort on getting a level 99 skill, you'll want the rewards to be good. --- Attack: hidden +15% bonus when hood and cape are worn, as well as +4 stab, slash, and crush bonuses. Defense: hidden +15% bonus when hood and cape are worn, as well as +13 stab, slash, and crush bonuses. Strength: hidden +15% bonus when hood and cape are worn, as well as a +6 strength bonus. Hitpoints: HP heals twice as fast when cape and hood are worn. This could be compounded with the "rapid heal" prayer. Prayer: Prayer lasts twice as long, and regenerates like HP. Players also get +2 additional prayer and praying at an altar. Regular altars would give 101/99, and special altars would give 103/99 prayer. Stats of regular prayer cape would have +6 prayer, and trimmed prayer capes would have +10 prayer. Magic: hidden +15% bonus when hood and cape are worn, as well as +15 magic defense and attack. Ranged: hidden +15% bonus when hood and cape are worn, as well as +5 stab, slash, and crush bonuses. Cooking: guaranteed 100% success rate when cooking. Food heals a bit more if you eat while wearing the hood and cape. Low level food like shrimp would heal 4 instead of 3, but high-level pies would heal 26 instead of 22, etc. Woodcutting: more effecient cutting speeds, as well as more nests. Fletching: Ability to make more bolt and arrow tips per gem, pearl, and wolf bone, as well as more shafts from wood. Fishing: Faster fishing speed, and more chances of getting a casket if the player uses a big net. Firemaking: Fires that you make last twice as long. Crafting: Half as likely to crush semi-precious gems. Smithing: 75% success rate when smelting iron, and reduced amount of coal when smithing as follows: regular furnace: steel - 2 coal, mithril - 3 coal, adamantite - 4 coal, rune - 5 coal with blast furnace: steel - no coal, mithril - 1 coal, adamantite - 2 coal, rune - 3 coal Mining: faster ores, as well as more gems. This could be compounded with a glory amulet. Herblore: Potions more effect if used when the player is wearing the cape and hood. For example, fishing potions would give +5 instead of +3. Agility: No fail at any obstacles; energy restores twice as fast. Thieving: Increased success rate when pickpocketing and picking locks. Slayer: +15% attack, strength, and defense to all combat types (melee, magic, range) when fighting slayer monsters. Farming: If the player plants a seed while wearing the cape and hood, then they have half the likelihood to become diseased. Runecrafting: Cape and hood acts as an elemental talisman. Also, players can teleport to outside any altar with the cape. Construction: Ability to teleport to outside any portal, regardless of the player's house's location. Quest: As the player has done many favors for NPCs, they should return the favor. Possible rewards include reduced prices to NPC services or better chances to get valuable items from random events, and can be compounded with the Ring of Charos (a). Players should also be able to teleport to certain locations (Crandor, Miscellania, etc). The cape has 10 charges; after that, the player has to get it recharged by the wise old man for 1,500 gp. Comments and constructive criticism welcome.
  23. Thanks for the advice, guys! Maybe I shouldn't have thrown away those "junk" from HAM...
  24. Some people say that rusty swords can be repaired, and that you can get up to mithril (I use a whetstone, right?). Also, some say that damaged armor can be repaired and may yield up to rune. Is that true?
  25. While scamming is relatively common, I don't think that up to 80% are scammers, lol. Otherwise, most people on RS would be banned already.
