I agree with both those points. Now, I think that there are some people who are homeless because they didn't apply themselves, but that wouldn't make it the drugs and lack of education to blame. Plus I've heard from my Psychology teacher that a lot of homeless people do have mental disorders and that some are even released patients who have no family to take them in.

That would be lovely, but I don't see anything unnecessary about wielding a gun to protect yourself from someone else with a gun. I think of a handgun as a 1-hit problem solved. Of course they should be regulated, and harshly at that, but they are probably the most effective means of self-defense.

Yes and no. I do feel bad because when I compare their lifestyles to mine, I feel like a spoiled brat who has everything. But then, part of me doesn't feel bad because everyone has their fair share (okay, maybe not so "fair") of problems. The hobos don't have to worry about drama, supporting others, worry about the economy, etc. Their life not being as complex as ours is both a good and bad thing.

Sometimes it's hard to do good deeds. Especially when it seems like the whole world is against you and people keep messing around with your life. But in actuality, that should be an incentive. Why would we want others to be in the same shoes as us when we're feeling sad? I know that misery loves company, but life isn't permanent. Only your effect on society is. You need to be the change that you want to make in the world. I'm actually planning to write a book about this type of thing. Maybe not a full turnaround, but even if it makes someone do something as tiny as giving up their seat for someone in a bus, the story made a positive difference and can assuredly be deemed as a success.

Heh, I wanted my permit when I turned 15 and bugged my parents for it. "We'll help you with it soon. Soon!" Now I'm 18. :| I've also been pretty nervous about driving. This thread makes me feel more confident though. Just seeing other people in the same situation makes me feel at ease.

Both of those are cases where consent is not present so they're quite a different ballpark. If we're talking about prison sex, then I agree - a gay man shouldn't rape another man.

The worst part is how they bleed for what seems like an eternity. That's why I try to shave at night. I don't want to go out in public and wipe blood off my face every 3 seconds.

The only difference is that we can try to rationalize things. Animals can't make the connection, "Hey there's that monkey that killed my brother last month! Get him!" You do bring up a good point though. Animals kill over stupid reasons such as territory or mates. That doesn't suggest that humans can too. Although... we usually establish laws and stuff because we aim to eliminate detriments to our society. No killing because we don't want to live in fear and family's would grieve. No homosexuality because... it doesn't contribute to reproduction? No, that doesn't sound right at all.

What's ridiculous is your recurring strawmans. I'm not saying that everyone should have their own personal nuclear bombs at the ready - just that pepper spray is a poor means of self-defense when dealing with criminals wielding guns. Are explosives and assault rifles really an effective means for self-defense anyways? (Note: We are in the context of self-defense right now and not mass murder.) You're talking about weapons that are deemed as extremely lethal because they have the potential to kill numerous people, so how many cases are there where there are numerous attackers? An attacker uses those weapons so that they can kill multiple people, whereas a victim's intent should only be to ward off the attacker (usually only one). So back to the point. Do you think someone with a gun would be afraid of someone with pepper spray? Besides, who would take out pepper spray if they encountered a criminal with a gun? Now, stay on the same grounds for this next question. Do you think someone with a gun would be afraid of someone with explosives or would they just think that they're downright stupid? Furthermore, explosives have a good chance of injuring the user too. Perhaps now you see the difference in lethality and intimidation. My point is that victims should be on par with the criminal - in the limit that the method of self-defense is equal to and has a high probability to countering the method of the criminal's attack.
