Why is my computer so slow?
Glad I/We could be of some assistance. And I just learned before dinner that even though you aren't downloading anything, you still get bandwidth eaten up. I use Limewire, and I had it running, went out to ask my dad a question, and he told me I was downloading something...My download had finished about an hour before, and I have it set for no uploads, so it could potentially slow your computer down. I know it rapes my framerate on WoW, even if I'm not downloading. And you don't exactly need to remove steam, just disable it's startup (Disable the torrent on startup too, while you're in there). Just do start > run > msconfig - startup tab, and uncheck the steam and torrent checkboxes (and ONLY THOSE CHECKBOXES)...I've made the mistake of unchecking something that was of a rather high importance for starting up before, and it's not pretty.

Why is my computer so slow?
Can you take a screenshot of your processes and post it here, preferrably when the slowdown happens if possible. You wouldn't happen to have steam running or anything like that right? Also, would you happen to be running BitLord when you have the problem? Because that could very likely be a direct or indirect (ie you downloaded malware) cause of the slowdowns. Other than that, I can't see anything else that may cause you problems, save the indexing service, but I would need the aforementioned screenshot before making any reccommendations (although I can safely say close Steam, it's a RAM hog).

Best Internet/Computer protection program/firewall/scanners?
I'm not sure if I would go with Norton or McAfee...Probably Norton. I'm going to have to second pretty much everything slymongoose said. I'll add on that my personal view of Spybot is that it shouldn't be your antispyware program. That should be Ad-Aware. Spybot is your "Oh [cabbage], I think I have some malware going on in here" program. If you think you have an infection, or you saw something on your last Ad-Aware scan, run SpyBot. That's what I do, just scan with Ad-Aware, and if I think something's up, I'll run SpyBot. Kaspersky Internet Security is a great program. I know a few people who use it, and it's actually really good for an all-in-one. I do have a question for everyone here. Since we all seem to at least acknowledge Comodo as a top 3 firewall, I decided to install it. Well, after getting to about 3/4 done, McAfee fires an alarm that I have a virus...Now, it couldn't have been anything but Comodo, since I was completely disconnected from the internet, and only required processes were running. The virus was Adware-Websearch. I can't remember which variant it was, it may just be Adware-Websearch, or maybe .dldr. In any case, does anyone know why? The link in my history is http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/ ... ewall.html

Trojan help? Badly Needed Now!!!
Free Ad-Aware Be Here! Can't get any more of a direct link to it than this lol. Found some new things to help. [hide=Disable 3rd Party Cookies]For Internet Explorer: go to Tools> Internet Options> Privacy> Advanced: here check 'Override automatic....'; 'Allow session cookies'; 'Allow 1st party cookies'; & 'Block 3rd Party Cookies'. For Firefox: go to Tools> Options> Privacy: here UN-CHECK 'Accept 3rd Party cookies' ...Source[/hide] Can't remember if I suggested this already or not, but get Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. The link is the link to the download. Run it, and hopefully remove most of your problem. You may want to give Rogue Remover Free (alt link - Rogue Remover) a try too, but I didn't see the variant you have on the list, but it can't hurt to try.

Worst thing you got caught doing at school!
Eh, some of the cheaper kind has a slight alcoholly smell. Eh, I'd have to guess you're talking about Hawkeye vodka (the stuff that's like $10/bottle). Smells (strongly) like rubbing alcohol. Tastes like it too :-X Haven't been around it in awhile. Now that I think about it, I was thinking of Parrot Bay. One of my friends got away with bringing beer into school recently. Looked just like apple juice..How he pulled it off, I'll never know. Kindof put the "and stuff" in there intentionally, to include other things that may have a more pronounced smell.

Trojan help? Badly Needed Now!!!
Take a machine gun, and blow your computer to pieces. You've just been attacked by one of the nastiest pieces of malware. http://www.pctools.com/downloads/afl_2-spyware/sdsetup[Caution: Executable File] This will give you a program that is designed to remove the XP antispyware...Just found it, so I put it above the below paragraph, as it seemed more useful. Make sure to install it in Safe Mode. You need to go here immediately. Download the program on a non-infected computer, put it on a flash drive or cd, boot your computer in safe mode, and run it. It will attempt to remove the program.

How do i beat NETGEAR firewall thats blocking rs?
I would advise you strike a deal with them. Hack the router once and they start calling in techy people which makes your job so much harder...Not that I've ever tried :-w Seriously, it will be a lot better for you if you just get a deal. Agree to mow the yard or keep your room clean, or maybe clean the gutters or something stupid and trivial. My parents did this to me awhile ago, but it was because my grades were starting to slip a bit. I just agreed to get my homework assignments written down and shown to them and then I'd get to play. Just don't let them install Net Nanny or any other spyware program (yes it's spyware, it collects personal information and sends it to the person who installed it, without your consent). It's a pain to get off, and when you do, they'll know when logs stop showing up, and they'll have seen anything you've done...Although there are ways to get them to bend to your will, but I'm not going there.

Windows Vista Firewalls - What's good?
What I meant was that it's built in to windows. Windows is not, nor will it ever be, renowned for it's security. Plus, It's built in to all windows systems (maybe not, but it's on XP and Vista, so yeah). So that would mean that anyone with a windows computer could access the firewall, which means hackers can work on finding holes in it easier. And, since most people with windows has the firewall, one unpatched hole can affect a lot of people. Window's record on security (with weekly patches and all) should be a bit of a warning sign that "hey, maybe we can't protect your computer too well"..Aside from the fact that they don't really make any security products (how often do you hear of people in the tech community saying "I love my Windows Firewall, it's better than Comodo and Zone Alarm"? Never).

Best Internet/Computer protection program/firewall/scanners?
~Free~ Antivirus: Avira. Anti-sypware: Ad-Aware 2008 free, and Spybot S&D (maybe Spyware terminator or spyware blaster, can't remember which, instead of Spybot, as it can cause problems). Fierwall: Comodo ~Pay~ Antivirus: NOD32 I don't know about pay antispyware and a pay firewall, because I've never wanted to pay for one, and thus haven't done the research. I personally would only put AVG and Zone Alarm on someone's computer if I hated them and wanted revenge. And I have to disagree with Das. Yes, your router's firewall may do a good job at protecting you, but a software firewall will lower the chances of anything getting in even more, and if something does get on, the chance of it making routine communications is almost nil (if you get the right one that is).

Windows Vista Firewalls - What's good?
*rings doorbell* common sense, are you there?...*leaves after a few minutes*... Trusting your computer's safety to windows firewall is like jumping out of a plane without a parachute...It's not going to end well. Windows is the 5th lowest on the matousec tests. It's about the same on every review. I wouldn't say it's good for anything, except taking up hard drive space.

Web Design/Web based scripting
Hell no, I love JS. The frontend of my forums system is going to be entirely ajax (like gmail kinda style, with an emphasis on scalability) I'm just saying it doesn't need to be used when it doesn't have to be. Laziness != Efficiency is my motto. Ahh Ajax, the next next step on my quest to design websites (well, it should tie into my learning of JS right, considering most people call it "Javascript on steriods.")...And I'm sorry for assuming it would be useful, but as I said, I know nothing about PHP, and little about JS (what JS I know I know through learning Java, since quite a few things are syntactically similar). And I never said Errdoth said JS was bad, just that by the tone of his posts, it seemed like he was putting down JS. Am I the only one who thought so?

Web Design/Web based scripting
Well, put it this way: Cons of using JS: Small percentage of people will be unable to use it properly Cons of using target attrib: None No cons are better than even a small one :| As long as you aren't saying JS is bad in general, you're fine. If you are, then I'll probably have to...well..on here, probably yell at you in a foreign language is about as bad as I could do...lol. But, I do see your point. And I did read about the target attribute thing, but I figured that the other code was more...idk how to explain it. And in any case, doesn't Tip.It require JS for like the main page anyways? So, there would be no problem, right?

Question for those familiar with NOD32, SpybotS&D,ZA(free)
I'm not going to try to get you to switch from NOD32, because I'm considering using it myself. Plus, DVD will probably come hunt you down and do bad things to do if you switch from it lol. I have a few sites you may want to look at for your firewall problem: Firewall Review thing (read it, it links to a lot of good articles) Great Review, expresses how I would rank things pretty well. Also pretty much the review people go on when recommending firewalls (although my rec's are mainly based on word of mouth, then I look into reviews like this). Hope they help. Also, Firefox does that to me occasionally as well. I know when FF doesn't shut down right when I have a low framerate on WoW lol. I'm not sure how to fix your other problems, best wait for sloter or Clare to wonder by, because I've gone through pretty much everything I know of to fix this.

Worst thing you got caught doing at school!
I still don't get how people get away with bringing vodka or something like that to school. You would think at least the smell would tip someone off (which is why I never tried it)...I could probably do it though, considering I always have a water bottle with me (been carrying one almost every day to school since like 7th grade). Then again, I've brought all types of drinks into school and never gotten caught. Soda (including a 2L bottle that was chilled and full), Sunny D, apple juice, iced tea, Monster (best energy drink evar), NOS (energy drink, tastes bad, but it gives a nice energy boost), Rockstar (sucks, never buying again)...And considering anything but water is banned (not going to go through the list of food I've brought in lol, all food is banned except in the cafeteria)... OT: Today, I got into a fight with a teacher, that was probably close to a physical brawl. He kept telling me and a few of my friends to be quiet, even though we weren't talking that loud. Insults were voiced on both sides, then he comes over, and threatens to send me to the dean (who I get along with pretty well, not to mention I've gotten 2 pride tickets in 5 weeks, and never had a detention somehow)... Eventually he tries to ask me questions about the movie we were watching, I answered every one without thinking, and he shut up and went back to the others side of the auditorium (people were making up FCAT, so our class was displaced and sent to the auditorium). My teacher is probably going to get pissed at me though..Oh well, it's only History class, and I hate his wife, so I suppose it wouldn't be the worst thing.

Question for those familiar with NOD32, SpybotS&D,ZA(free)
Process problems? Have a new program. This is made by Microsoft, and why it's not pre-installed, I have no idea...But anyways, it details processes, giving you who made it, it's usage over time, etc. It's really useful, should help you find anything taking up too much space, and give you confidence about stopping it. I wouldn't put too much faith in ZA. I've watched it screw up a few computers before, and I've read even worse things. But to each his own, I suppose. If you think the Immunize feature is to blame for your problems, just use one of the backups that SpyBot makes, and restore the program to how it was. Like I said before, you don't need Spybot, it was just a recommendation. Try Spyware Doctor if you want to check for spyware. I've heard it's a pretty decent anti-spyware, but I've never used it, so I can't say if it's good or bad, or what it may do to your computer.

Trojan help? Badly Needed Now!!!
And yeah, that's why you don't use Norton..It's a horrible antivirus now. Get Avast or Avira if you don't want to pay..If you do want to pay, I hear good things about NOD32 (whoa, did I post NOD32 before DVD?). A HJT log wouldn't be too bad either. Make sure you restart your computer after deleting the malware though, as it may help make some problems go away. You did scan with AdAware and Spybot right? If not, do so. If you did scan with both, I would suggest downloading Comodo firewall and configuring it. Might not need to, but in case you aren't clean yet: Get the installer for Avast! (or whatever other antivirus, I suggested Avast!, Avira, or NOD32). Disconnect your computer from the internet, then stop Norton from running at startup (start > run > msconfig > startup tab > uncheck norton). Restart the computer, and install Avast!. Once you are sure that the antivirus you installed is running, and Norton isn't, go online, and download the latest virus definitions for it. Do a full scan, and delete what it finds.

How about NO? I hate new windows...Unless, of course, you mean to make it an option to open it in a new window or a new tab. And to dsavi_x4 - Sorry, but it seemed useful, and at least a bit close. At least I tried...lol.

Trojan help? Badly Needed Now!!!
NOT SAFE! I know that website URL, it's not at all safe. Pick up FireFox and WOT (Web Of Trust), or Site Advisor (on FF or IE), and both should block access to the page, as it did for me just now (had to make sure). Although Site Advisor is running really slowly. antipsyware-review.biz review. I don't know the ya-tracker.com site, but I would advise not going to it, as the name even sounds fishy to me. The ending part of the url (pdfdoc/fhashba.pdf) sounds like a piece of malware, but I can't remember where I may have heard of it. If you got that link from microsoft firewall, your computer is definitely being raped by a piece of malware as we speak. It sounds like WinAntiVirus 2008 (or one of the others, like 2007), as I think my computer did about the same thing when I had it. If your background changes and says you have an infection, we have a major problem. DO NOT GET DOWNLOADS FROM THAT SITE! Go Here. It's a small post I made on my test forum, it has links to some programs you need to get and scan with immediately.

Click for Java Knowledge. Seriously, go to that link and look through the book. It's the complete online version of the book I'm using to learn Java. Link to PHP code? Think that's what you want.

Password got keylogged, how did it happen?
If I had to guess, I would say your multitude of programs caused problems with each other, and while they were arguing, the file pulled a Stealth > Ambush > Cheap Shot on your computer (If you play WoW, you'd get the reference). You should only have 1 antivirus, 1 firewall, and maybe 2 antispyware (many people suggest Spybot and Ad-Aware together at max). With your 10 antispyware, firewall, and 3 virus scanners, plus 6 different registry and crap cleaners (/exaggeration), you're bound to have conflicts somewhere. Try to cut down on your anti-x usage, stick with what you really need (mentioned above), not what your paranoid mind thinks you need. I looked at your list of programs and added on to our house with the bricks I shat...srsly.

Windows Vista Firewalls - What's good?
I'm in the same boat as you. I'm running XP, and McAfee, but I'm looking for a new firewall. I would suggest looking at Comodo. It's free, and I haven't seen any really bad reviews (like those made for ZoneAlarm) on it, so you may want to give it a try. I'm probably going to download it soon myself. I head about Ashampoo firewall too, one of my friends was telling me about it, but I don't know much about it. I think one review said it crashed a bit frequently, but its still great when it works.

Question for those familiar with NOD32, SpybotS&D,ZA(free)
Spybot gave my mom's computer problems when we used it, similar to those you describe, but I've been using it on this computer for at least a month straight with no problems at all (except TeaTimer taking up quite a bit of resources, but I disabled that particular feature). It could also be ZoneAlarm. I've read online (and experienced firsthand) ZoneAlarm messing up computers. First, try to disable TeaTimer or Spybot all together (Grab Ad-Aware 2008 free edition while you're at it, it's similar to spybot, catches what the other misses). If you still have the problem, download the installer for Comodo, disconnect from the internet, shut down Zone alarm. Then set it to not start on startup (msconfig - startup tab - uncheck Zone Alarm entries). Restart the computer, install and configure Comodo, connect to the internet, and do your testing. If you're fine, it's probably Zone Alarm, if not....Well, we'll just wait for you to try any of the above.
