Poverty, no family/trying to support elders alone, no education or a job, persuaded by other gang members... People don't just "join" gangs. You are recruited if the leader sees you have nothing left to lose in life by joining them and will likely be loyal. In some bad neighbourhoods or slums especially outside of the US, like in Brazil, it may actually be the only way to stay alive. A better question would be "is there anyone in a gang who wasn't forced to"? If you got to ask a number of gang members why they became involved... You'd find chronic poverty, family disputes/violence/domestic violence, low education, behind every person's life. Would you rather work a white collar job in an office for $2k a month, or risk your life and health being a scummy dealer or robber who gets to keep 5% of his profits and passes 95% up to his superiors, eventually ending up in prison? Nobody is in a gang voluntarily... Aside from that,some people owe the gang money,and work it off by collecting loans from other debtors.Along the prostitutes sold,those also owe money more often than not.I've yet to meet a prostitute who did her job out of pleasure.

Just for discussion sake,here's what my handwriting looks like when rushed.When not rushed its only a little bit cleaner.

Now I'm not in a gang.My brother is,my friends are.But not me.I work with one,and sometimes I help out.But by no means am I in it.My tattoos have nothing to do with the gang,and should there be a squabble,I have no need to participate. But this I know:Here its usually more out of a sense of brotherhood than for money.No doubt there is money in the trade,but most of the brothers don't peddle or pimp,they just hang out and help each other when a fight breaks out.I'm not really sure about hierarchy though,what I know is really based on guess-work.

uniform is another thing that must go, it's so annoying, the shirts are heat magnets in summer -.- I have no problem with uniforms. a lot of valid 'pro' arguments compared to the repedative 'uniforms crush self-expression' which is all most people seem to be able to come up with. Anyhow, that's really a minor issue in the long run. Like that if you're in a uniform you don't spend as much time preening in class and actually listen?I like my uniform though.With a plain black shirt inside it looks cool,and without it has a this enough fabric for our humidity not to matter.
