The conditions sound a little odd. Necromagus, could you tell us if the BIOS shows up ? Did you hear a whirring or a clicking sound just before the fan stopped functioning ? Did the speed of the fan go down slowly or did it come to a immeadiate stop ? I suspect it might be something to do with the heatsink, but I'd rather not pry open a laptop. Sometimes what happens is that the physical components, if not working will force the system to kick it, trying to prevent any further damage. So, if you fill us in with all the details before, during and after the bootup, we may be able to help more.
