The_Gabe
Well, everyone pretty much says that the "n-word" is offensive, racist, etc. But is it really? If African Americans say it is racist, and yet they say it themselves to other African Americans, would it really be considered racist? Note: I'm not saying you should use it, or am racist. :P Three months banishment to 9gag is something i would never wish upon anybody, not even my worst enemy. deathdrow
it's only offensive if you think of it in a bad way, or you use it to try to degrade someone for being black.
mlclm
It seems like it's going down the same road as (mentally disabled) and (homosexual) went down. It started as a derogatory name for a specific group, but now it's just something you call your friends when they act dumb/weird.
Giordano
I would completely understand they think of it as racist, if they didn't use it themselves. The way I see it, [racist term] is used more for the hip-hop/rap type blacks rather than ordinary blacks. Hobgoblinpie
I've wondered this for a long time. I wouldn't call a black person the 'n-word even' in a joking way because I think it is offensive, and not whether they think it is or isn't. If I knew someone who didn't mind it and I was a good friend with them, I might say it jokingly one or two times, because they'd know that I didn't mean it offensively. Bauke
They use it themselves. So I don't care what "they" say. I'll use it anyways if I please. The fact that white people can't use that word, while black people can... THAT is racism. Additionally, in my country it doesn't have a racist connotation. We call these people "negers", (normal word for blacks) which is pretty close. 1_man_army
It isn't a case of "they say it so it's okay", it is a case of context. In the context of a white person saying it in reference to a black person has certain racial and historical connotations because of how the word has been used previously in that context - that is why it offensive to black people in that context. It's use within the black community towards each other has other connotations that bear little relevance to the word's original meaning. Incidently the use of the n-word within the black community is a contentious issue within it, many people find the word offensive in that context also so it isn't as simple as saying that "they" all say it. Lenticular_J
Depends on how people take it, context and all. (Dammit got beat) I say it to my couple of black friends. Not that big of a deal with the younger generation. But, all the same, if someone wants to get offended, they will - this goes with anyone, although generally it's black people and girls that can get offended (At least by stuff I do). If I hold the door open for you, I don't really want to get yelled at, damn it. So, yeah catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream

Bauke
Aren't there hardly any black people in the Netherlands? Depends on where you're looking. Big cities like Amsterdam or Rotterdam it's 50/50 blacks vs. whites. On the country side though, one might be surprised to see a black person. I'm guessing about 100% of the posters of this thread iare white, and about 70% are by far the majority race in their schools, cities, whatever. Probably, but that's not an argument for anything. Azvareth
Whether a bunch of white over-privileged high school kids feel like they're entitled to use a racist slur their ancestors used on black slaves as a way to dehumanize them is completely irrelevant. Fact of the matter is should you use it, there will be repercussions (probably in the form of angry fists). And you are patently dumb as hell if you don't understand why it might cause that reaction. It's equally dumb to propose that it should be a perfectly acceptable word to throw around.
