The N-word, is it actually offensive?

I don't need examples of it. If something offends a person and you continually keep doing it, you are probably not a nice person to be around. That is really the end of the line and that is all I am trying to say.

I'm not getting personal, I really have no idea how you can't comprehend such a simple concept such as that. I mean, children in preschool are taught this! As far as the last part of your post, if you're trying to push racial inequalities aside why do you insist on calling someone a N***er? Doesn't that seem completely [wagon] backwards to you?

I mean, one can argue that, yes, a word is just a word. And in all honesty that holds some semblance of truth. However just like any other swear word there is a time and a place for it. I don't know about you but I'm not going to walk up to someone on the street and just start swearing up a storm. I mean, unless I know the person I'm going to be a bit respectful (which it seems like some people have just completely forgotten about).

How many times do I need to state that I don't use that word? -.- I don't even speak English irl. How many times do I have to say that I disagree that a word suddenly gets offensive if one with a different skin colour says it? If THEY can use it, then so can I. There's no reason for me to actually say that word, but I don't buy the crap that when I say it, it'd be offensive.

It's not crap, it's a fact of life. Most, if not all black people are offended by the n word. I think Nadril makes a good point - there's no reason to go around using the n word (whether or not you use the word is beside the point) if you know it's going to offend people. I mean, I don't find Cannibal Corpse albums that offensive, but I wouldn't walk around in public with their violent artwork pasted on a t-shirt.

The N-word's old meaning has really been forgotton now. It used to mean lazy, but people started using it towards black people as they were used as white's slaves but eventually it turned into just a racist meaning.

White people can call other whites the N-word.

Black people can call other blacks the N-word.

If a white person calls a black person the N-word then it is wrong or vice-versa then it has a racist meaning behind it.

The old meaning should be brought back but not in a derogotry way.

You're right, there is no reason to use it. There's also no reason to get so hung up on it either. It is just a word after all.

And I don't understand your "precedent" argument. Are you saying it's wrong to use a word if it has been used for a long enough period of time, but if it's a fresh thing that hasn't been used as often until recently, such as the term "whitey", then this makes it automatically less offensive? I find the n-word and "whitey" to be completely analogous. They are both words concerning one's race in a negative context, regardless of their usage in the past.

People think they have the right to go through life and not be offended. Well guess what? You don't. You're goona find things offensive to you in many ways, many times over for the rest of existence.

Well, yeah, they obviously get offended. No doubt in that. Though that doesn't mean I will just accept that black people discriminate in who can use the N-word. If they get offended, that's their problem. If I were to use that word (I wouldn't, I have no reason to) I would not blame myself if anyone gets offended. It's their decision to discriminate based on skin colour, not mine.

I'll deem a word offensive if it's not dependent on which skin colour you have.

I agree that it is bad to say it like with an -er at the end, but with an -a, it isn;t as bad, that;s just like saying what's up dog or something.././

I wont smoke it if the name ain't right

Fly, that is a very popular and very dumb argument for defending it's use.

I'll use it as I see fit. If I get into a fight with someone who's black, and I'm angry and trying to offend them, I'll gladly whip it out there. Though I don't really get into fights. I do use it when I have some road rage with black drivers. :-#

I admit, I find it stupid that black people can say it but whites can't, but I see the solution to this as no one saying it rather than everyone saying it, so no, I don't use it.

Wouldn't the real solution be everything unclenching their buttholes a little?

I suppose, the fact is that it carries offensive connotation and for good reason. It's just being nice not to use it.

True. And it's not like it is only limited to a joking-around-thing. I've heard black people use that word against other people, sometimes even white people, and it was intended to be offensive.

Wanna talk about offensive? How about when I'm called the c-word? But do I get offended? No. I just laugh them off. Because I am one. ::'

yeh you are, everyone hates you for mexican jokes.

No, I think it was just you. And there were only two jokes. And you were "offended." Oh boo hoo. "Someone on the internet said something mean. Wahhhh :( :( :( "

What's the reason to use it anyways? I don't see it as a word I can't say, not even really a word I shouldn't use in a non-racist way but I don't use it because it's not something I have any reason to say. Now I could probably say it as much as I wanted at school and no one would be offended, but my school is honestly about 98% white, 1.5% other minorities and .5% black (I think there are 2 or 3 black kids in my entire school). I know one of the black kids in my school uses the word himself and his friends do to as a term of endearment. A few of my friends will occasionally use it jokingly and usually pronounced differently (k's instead of g's and an -a instead of -er).

Anyways, what I was trying to say is that I see no reason to use it, but the people who do tend to do it inoffensively. There's also a video on how the way it's pronounced makes a big difference the connotation, but I have no idea if I could find it.

So if a Mexican laughs at his jokes, what would he be?

Cuz that would be me.

Your "us vs them" mentality disappoints me.

Yeh... you make me sick you racist piece of [cabbage]

I'm willing to bet money you don't know a single person from Mexico, illegal, second/third-generation, or legal. CASH MONEY.

About 50% of the Mexicans I know are [bleep]ing hilarious. Half of their jokes involve them stealing something, jumping over a fence, or swimming. Mexican jokes. Because they're funny, and the majority of the population in town is Mexican. They don't care if one of their friends, like me, says them. They'll bust my balls about it because I'm white, and that's just more of the race joke thing. It's funny to us that there can be racism, it's just one big laughapalooza here.

Of course, there's gangster kids in every race group, and nobody really likes them.

catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream

I don't understand how it is a dumb argument. The slave owners called them N***er, and that is why black people turn to the defensive when a white person says it. Black people have now throughout time changed it to N***a; slang for homie, or dog..... So black people are most definently going to take more offence to N***er the N***a...Plus you don't hear other black people call each the one with the -er very often.

I don't even get why you guys think black people call each other [racist term]s very often. I rarely hear it (well, I guess not exactly rarely, but it's probably one of the least common nicknames). It's all about bro now.

Me_hate_libs, the only reason I don't really like you from those jokes is you pretty much said after one that you picked a random minority.

So that's pretty much telling me you were just trying too hard to be offensive or edgy.

And I'm half mexican (1/4th brazilian, 1/4th american. Ish, my family confuses me.)
