  1. [hide=Quote Chain] In this type of retro-virus definitley not. Most mutations regarding viruses and most single "bodied" organisms happen in response to drugs, or accidently in genome transcription. HIV mutates rapidly and only because of its frequent attachment to certain cells that force it to churn out more viruses. HIV never mutates into a "new virus" as such but slowly changes its indiviudual characteristic to adapt to foreign influences. I was about to say that this was interesting and then I read Trapical's post. What Trapical said is very relevant. Mutation is always random. Mutation rate however, might vary. And retro-viruses do have a high mutation rate, due to the fact that they don't have proof reading mechanisms. And yes, certain chemical compounds might be mutagens, thus increasing mutation rate. However, which nucleotides might chance, and what the chance will be is totally random. Thus, nothing can be said about the outcome of a mutation. It is true that viruses can adapt to drugs and such, but that principle is covered by natural selection. It has nothing to do with the process that is mutation. It's simply the fact that only the viruses that can adapt will be able to replicate, and others can't, leaving only the adapted viruses. In short: no, mutation is random. Plenty of scientists that would want to induce genetic changes in humans. Fact is legislation won't allow that. But it is to be expected that once more is known about DNA manipulation in vivo and we can guarantee safety, new therapies will arise. It will certainly be something that is highly on the list of research potentials, and the so called "basal rule" you're talking about does not exist at all. That genetic manipulation does not have to lead to bad consequences is proven by the fact that a lot of genetic variation exists in the human population. Lots of genes are turned on or off in different human beings. Additionally, it would also be possible to turn genes back on when they are turned off by mutation in the first place. Think of cancer therapies, for example. Take P53 for example. If would be able to turn the P53 gene back on, we would be able to diminish quite a few tumours. [/hide] The way you initially phrased it, you were implying that randomness was the main determinant. Mutation can refer to how it mutates, when it mutates, the actual mutation, the effect before and after mutation. Your original post was more than ambiguous, if you want to argue semantics, feel free to PM me. :P You second post, however makes more sense.
  2. The end of the world - as in I'm not really scared of it, but I think about it all the time. Also flying, and bugs. Oh, and price elasticity of demand. That thing use to scare the [cabbage] out of me. I know, the same as me. I'm also kind of scared by any large bodies of water. And especially when its dark. Going to the deep end in a pool at nightime will scare the jumping jehovah out of me.
  3. May sound "emo" but Unwed Sailor. Some of their songs are good. Purley instrumental.
  4. Was a smelly [cabbage] [cabbage] [cabbage] [cabbage] [cabbage]pile. I've got a permanent cataract in my eye. How [cabbage] was the ending. Trailer got my hopes up, but [bleep]ing aliens, c'mon. It's always [bleep]ing aliens. [bleep] YOU Alex Proyas. Would have been only a minor let down if not for the coma inducing aliens and the last buggery-inducing 45 seconds. EDIT: Lets hope that 2012 isn't as bad.
  5. I'd like to do that to my wall but cant find good cheap posters. Suprised no one has posted any Motorhead posters. Simple yet, cool. Motley Crue or Judas Priest anyone ? Plently of ACDC, Nirvana, Led Zepplin and Iron Maiden. Those are the staples but anyway...
  6. Reservoir Dogs was first and better. I resent that statement. With Pulp Fiction, especially with some of the hard critics it developed a "either you love it or hate it". Personally, at my school it has developed a cult gathering, and most mufti days [casual day], some seniors wear Pulp Fiction clothes, ties and all. Don't know if they do it now... Either way, trailer looks good. Hope it's nothing like Defiance. [i know it wont be, but still.] For some reason, I like this parody style. "Spaghetti Western"
  7. Quit lurking, you've tormented jaerk enough. This is two threads now ! Personally, I'm surprised, however I think there is a high chance this is unsubstansiated rumor.
  8. Biggest load of crap I've ever heard. Well, take a simple look around. Who's the most sick, the people that clean they things with products that kill 99% of bacteria or those that use products that kill less bacteria? You're going to see that people that kill all the possible bacteria they can find are sick much more often than those that don't kill the bacterias as much. Simple immune system practicing. I'm sorry, but you don't have any clue about what you're talking about. If we don't vaccinate against certain diseases, these diseases will simply kill us. The immune system is a beautiful thing, but will NOT simply protect you against everything. Personally I think sbrideau2000 is a little confused. Allow me to explain it to him in words that he will understand. You say The immune system's function has no relation whatsoever in the way it responds to external, environmetal bacteria. It's only when we use anti-biotics that bacteria develop a reistance. Also you much be thinking of the immune system before its "maturity" to use laymans terms. Correct if you do not sanitize your environment, your immune system will develop a resistance naturally, but it cannot protect us from some diseases. Anway after a certain age, and a number of vaccinations relating to the certain disease your point becomes moot.

Don't even try to hang 10 on 5'5 board. Actually if this is your first time surfing, you shouldn't be concerned with that. Apparantly my friends who surf regularly tell me it's easier when the water isn't bastardly cold. So yeah, good luck with it.
  10. At mine ? If yes, thats a first. If no, I'll keep my hopes to myself.
  11. Damn, been a while since I played that game. Loved it though. Put a hole in my pocket aswell, post 2006. Great game in my opinion, better than Yu-Gi-Oh or anything else. Occaisonly go to pre-releases, latest one I went to was the Lorwyn one. Been playing on and off since Urza's saga. Personally I thought Kamigawa was fail. Main reason I stopped playing was most of my friends stopped, and then their friends stopped etc... Also Wizards keep spewing out new rules, sets, blocks and expansions - every 4 - 8 months. Can't be bothered to keep up. Been in a few sanctioned tournaments, my friend even was offered to go to America, expenses paid, but his mom didn't let him. Standard I can't be bothered to play, just takes too much time to make a current deck. I lol'ed when you said your DAD's decks. Some of my staples decks [i had a few] white weenie, elves (revamped that when future sight came out), cant remember too many of my set specific decks, but in timespiral I had a dragonstorm, blue control. Favourite decks include Boros/Burn - simple and effective. Red Green Aggro, and Suspend decks. Been several years since I last played, so my memory is still hazy. Do you still play Ace ?
  12. No no no, you do know that some vaccines for potentially deadly diseases such as measles and diptheria are linked to autism !? I mean why risk autism for the small chance of contracting that disease? Ludicrous ! The flu is the worst ! That needle is a foreign object thats going into my body ! MY BODY ! I mean its not like I'm harming anyone else by not getting my shot. That was sarcasm by the way. My view is that innoculation, vaccination and other preventative measures should be mandatory.
  13. We have Sirk lovers on the forum? Hello. Imitation of Life is such a bittersweet film, I like it too. More sad movies I like : Citizen Kane, Schindler's List, Of Mice and Men [the Malkovich one]. I dont like when Mufasa died in the Lion King. +1 to The Green Mile. Some scenes of The Shawshank Redemption are truly sad. Oh ! and One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest - Hollywood doesn't make movies like that anymore. Made me laugh like mad too.
  14. Some Lonley Island song. Like a Boss is a good candidate. Judas Priest also.
  15. Add a few zeroes to the first one and everyone else's bucketlist is possible. This list is identical to mine [the one in my head]
  16. Third one was the best. Occaisonly find these funny. The short, complete what the [bleep] jokes are much better that a short wind up and long intentionally pseudo-intelligent answer, in attempt to measure how long your [bleep]tionary is. Get it ? [bleep]tionary ? Oh god...
  17. Pages pffft. Riku posted in the time I clicked post reply... In class essays are the worst, you forget all the things you should write.

Ahahahaha. I just have the math today. I had a completely pointless week so far at the expense of sophomores like you. I thank you. Standardized Testing in the US ? A functioning [i'm not fully sure] education system ? THE US IS FALLING APART !!! I had another godamn practical examination today, in the lab ...
  19. Unless you count a ungracious, epileptic wobbling as running then yeah, I run. If I even jog for 15 minutes, I'm flat on my face.
  20. Male on Male - Uncomfortable Male on Female - Seedy Female on Male - "Encouraged" Female on Female - Yeah !!! Funny how that works... Still, says something about the level of authority in the school. Thats just peculiar. Also says something about the person who searched her.
  21. /thread I don't see what's so bad about 4chan at all, people selectively interpret information. Half the things on 4chan are pefectly normal. Except /b/, which is what most people percieve as the heart and soul of 4chan.

  23. Was this on the history channel ? OT: I can't really find any good input to add to this... What about our bones ? They would remain right ? Even in some apocalyptic situation ?
  24. [Talks in Clouseau-esque way] Right, right pulling the old "just pretending" - "dont hate me" trick, ah' yes old one that, especially on the tubes. Monsieur! You appear to have a beump on your head.[/Talks in Clouseau-esque way]
  25. ... I'm not going to dignify this thread with a post. Ooops !
