  1. In this sense, I couldn't agree more with you. The universe can't be finite. On the other hand, material infinity within our own world is obviously impossible.
  2. Vickie! You finally passed darkie to take the lead for the most annoyingly ignorant poster on TIF! To respond to you: Science and religion aren't mutually exclusive as you suggest. You cannot prove the supernatural. Therefore, your entire point is nonsensical. Guess what else is new! Geez, I didn't pass that ages ago? No, I only believe 'what if's' if there is some sort of logical theory or small amount of proof that comes along with it. How is the Bible not logical?
  3. That's why I'm agnostic, it's not a choice, it's the most rational stance. Nobody in the world has enough proof to prove one way or another; A God simply exists or he doesn't. I'll try to explain why I think so. Arguing about anything else is just a matter of personal beliefs that should not be confused with a logical argument. Thus I'll respect anybody's beliefs, because it is just as possible that a hindu is "right", or a muslim/christian/taoist/whatever is "right" in his beliefs. Currently, we can't disprove God's existence. Neither can we prove he exists. Thus atheism would sound the most logical solution, but it's not, because there is always the chance of God existing. Agnosticism is thus not a belief or religion, it's a neutral observation. Everybody's religious beliefs are equally valid until proven otherwise.
  4. There's no universal definition. To somebody, reality is everything that happens, without a negative or positive connotation. To some other person, it's a boring stage that happens occassionally when you run out of cash to be high or drunk.
  5. I have no idea what you mean by that, I've never had any ads or banners on the browser. I must admit I cracked serial keys for lots of programs and deeply apologise if there is some registry for Opera that removes ads which I can't honestly remember. As far as I know, the latest version should have no ads whatsoever.
  6. I compared google results just as a curiosity, Opera web browser has about 50% of the results Firefox web browser has. It's not widely used simply because fewer people know about it. On website statistics, I often see the users of Opera is about 2% of the traffic. Firefox may be better today than around the time of it's initial release, but when I first tried it years ago and did use it for many months, it wasn't really that good. Opera was a million times better in terms of usability, speed and the fact that if your browser closes down, you can continue from where you left. You can also change pages "forward and back" just by holding down the mouse button and clicking left/right, and the browser caches the site instead of always reloading it (pain in the butt especially if you use a slowly loading forum)
  7. It takes a LOT to dislike some person, at least for me. I can name very few people I know personally or have talked to, if at all, that I "hate". I do despise a lot of people, a good example being those who will purely judge a person based on his nationality, skin color, language, handicap or any other factor which the person can't personally effect. I feel sorry that a human should live his/her life in such an illusion and not realize he's being a *.
  8. Opera has had those things ages ago, that's why I still use it. So the war will be won by Opera and IE will be held as hostage just for being so crappy.
  9. Saddam killed 150 people? If you actually believe that's all he killed, the rest of your opinion on this subject is moot. As a result of his actions, including his gas attacks and the casualties sustained after HIS Gulf War, it's more like 150,000. Oh, and that's just Iraqis. Add to that Kuwaitis, Iranis, Americans, Brits, Swedes, Germans, and the other Coalition losses. And oh shoot, the familes of the judges involved in his case, all the people his sons beheaded for fun, the insurgents and civilians dying in an almost religious zealotry over him, all the people his Al-Queda friends have killed... 1. The only documented and proven cases are the events of Dujail and some videotape where he tests nerve gas on animals. Don't you think he would get a death sentence rather easily if it could be proven he killed 150,000 people? It can't be proven. 2. You may also read more about his "Al-Qaeda" friends on this news article. I find it weird how people will justify their own positions on a punishment before they even look up the factuality of their claims. You don't just associate "Al-qaeda", "Osama, "Hizbollah", "Muslim", "Saddam" and "terrorist" randomly with each other because you heard those words on the news. That's a big problem, the population of a country will support war based on something which is a lie.
  10. 40% of the population is Sunni, 60% is Shia. So yes, most likely a majority would like to see Saddam go down, but very few sunnis would want their own protector to die, who granted special opportunities for the minority of the country. By sentencing him to death, the court ruling already caused lots of shia muslims to go out on the street to celebrate. The sunni are mostly angry about it. Not to mention the insurgents and Saddam loyalists (which includes a lot of the former iraqi army and some of them are Shia) are growing in power daily, it's not a simple matter of passing the 9th grade and understanding the consequences of your "bad behavior". No matter what Saddam has done, they should proceed with caution, he's not dead yet after all. If I could prevent a full scale civil war and send him to prison for life instead, I'd do it.
  11. Nobody can doubt that. This is a special case, and yes it's perfectly logical to take his life as a punishment. But here, the debate was also about the legal aspect and his human rights. A trial where the judges are constantly changed, his own lawyers mysteriously disappear or get murdered, audio in the court transcripts that are sent to western media is bleeped out sometimes when he testifies, sometimes his testification is denied in the middle of his sentence... It does make sense to judge him by his own laws (which allow capital punishment) but no matter the crime, he should have a fair and neutral chance to defend himself, which we know is nearly impossible since the court is under (obvious) heavy influence on behalf of the US.

    Advice..

It depends a lot on the person. I was almost mentally crushed just by having to change schools, which crumbled most of my social network and demoralized my studies. Just "staying in touch" is not the same and if I contacted some of my old friends, they would barely even recognise me. But eventually, you can get over it. :) Your father indeed "holds all the cards", you have no chance of rebellion unless you could pay for your own rent, so try to explain it to him.
  13. Why do we need to doubt something that we already know is taking place? It's like the kid who goes to a robbed candy store and insists there is still candy left, being the spoiled brat he is. You hear the roar of the bear and claim no such creature exists. Many fish species and insects have already died out, and soon probably some mammals will too as well (though poaching is a big problem too). No, I definitely don't think it will "destroy" us. Yes, some places on Earth might become uninhabitable, people will move up north, and floods caused by melting glaciers will drown some cities. But (as nihilistic as it may sound) it probably wont happen during our lifetimes, but our children and grandchildren will without a doubt live a different life, because they will have no idea what a fish or a glacier is.
  14. Hi, Looked like a really original question for this forum so I went out to search for one. First some facts to know about it from what I read on professional sites: A hammered dulcimer may cost up to $2000, the less you spend, the lower quality it probably is (which is common sense), so generally the instrument is very expensive. Also, I had trouble finding sites that actually sell this item. Many sites recommend you buy it from a craftsman, not a store (since it is almost a novelty instrument). The price was a problem, but I finally came across a site that has the cheapest hammered dulcimer at $185: http://www.folknotes.com/HD.html I hope it works for you. 8-)
  15. Allow me to strongly disagree. First up; His chemical weapons use on his own people. He brutally killed innocent civilians by using Mustard gas and Sarin, Tabun and VX (extremely potent nirve gases). He did this to strike fear into the hearts of his enemies and to brutally stamp out any opposition. For info on what exactly it does to people; http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/rls/18714.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nerve_agent Besides this, he held an entire nation as hostage for over three decades. He ruled his country with an iron fist. He used his paramilitary police force to ensure he stayed in power. His party was the minority, so he had most of Iraq to handle. His police force could strike at any time and would often use torture. On innocent civilians. He stamped out civil rights, scared people into submission and rule as a classical oppressive dictator. Saddam Hussein was a cold, heartless man. He held the country together; but I doubt that the ends justify his evil means. Saddam Hussein was first to be accused for terrorism, links to Al-Qaeda, weapons of mass destruction... None of those were realized. They started digging and digging, his death penalty was for something that happened in the 1980's: The alleged killing of 143 shias in the town of Dujail, to understand why, you should take in account the town was just one of the many which plotted the eventual overthrow of Saddam (who preferred the Sunni minority). What is that number, compared to the Tianamen square massacre by the chinese communist party that killed thousands of students protesting for democratic changes in the country? Who got hanged as being responsible for that, who gave a crap in the western countries other than newspapers? Who listens to the fact that the current leader of Turkmenistan actively carries out a policy of terrorizing the population and at least 20-30 people are shot every month trying to escape the country? I have to radically disagree with the western demonization of Saddam Hussein. He is nothing compared to real dictators, he was able to provide Iraq with extensive social benefits, medical care, jobs, as long as nobody would question his power. As a person, I think he might've been insane or corrupted, for example he was mad at his son briefly, he ordered his bodyguards to pour petrol on his collection of sport cars which he had bought him and set them on fire. If you want to blame somebody for massacres and human rights violations and invade their countries, look out for the leaders of Syria, North Korea, Turkmenistan, current Egypt, Uganda (which has been known to even test new weaponry on civil population) and Myanmar (executes people daily for treason). I'm not "siding" with Saddam, I'm saying his "human right violations" have nothing to do with the US being a good guy and handing him over to the Iraqis for judgement. The trial was set up by the United States government. The judges were appointed by coalition forces, several of Saddam's lawyers have mysteriously disappeared or been murdered. In some of the trial transcripts, when Saddam says something, the audio is cut off for several minutes, he has been denied testification in the middle of his sentence, the judge has been changed several times... That's not a fair trial, no matter what the man has done. It's the exact opposite of today's legal standards of Habeas Corpus, which is by definition "legal instrument or writ by means of which detainees can seek release from unlawful imprisonment." In this case, he had no chance to do so because his trial was just theatre; Even if he could prove he hadn't prompted the killings, he'd still been sentenced. The announcement of the execution also nicely comes on the 5th of November, briefly before the US elections.
  16. That's exactly what I was thinking about. The space is most likely infinite, where is this evidence of a magical barrier all of a sudden? Is the universe confined in a certain sized square or a triangle? I doubt it, because there must be something outside of it (even if it's just nothingness). Or maybe our "space" is just a tiny flea compared to the wholeness of the entire being of the universe which goes on and on.
  17. Neutrality is better than pessimism or optimism, especially if you're too optimistic and ignore all the bad stuff, imagining you live in a happy world of rainbows, roses and magic silver beavers. The reality is going to eventually strike you hard. If you're too pessimistic, it could start altering your brain chemistry and you can become depressed. Being skeptic is not the same thing as constantly whining about everything and saying "it wont work anyways". Take the world as it is. It has both good and bad sides, sometimes the bad outweighs the good especially in non-western countries, but it's always good not to idealise or demonise anything. The world itself is just a piece of land and water, how we percieve it is the result of humans. The world cannot have a negative or positive connotation, it just is, regardless of it giving life or taking them.
  18. When it comes to downloading programs, everything is a question of personal values and morality *cough* The only software I've paid for are certain games because I wanted to support the developers for being so awesome. That's the best you're going to find, and it's actually very good with a FF-esque battle system and very easy interface (you don't even need to know how to program).

  20. It saddens me to read through this topic and see the youth of the world fatten themselves with sugar-laden lardfests that contain enough calories to feed 10 hungry children for a week, and spend thousands of dollars in medicare costs afterwards. Also, not many people mentioned the supreme and healthy power of the blueberry pie 8-)
  21. The generator is very intelligently designed, it makes you wonder. A lot of political news I read are almost like that, which is very scary. The generator can make anybody bad, and actually sound credible while doing so. For example when I wrote Pres. Bush in the generator, amongst others it came up with the line: Of course it says things that could be applied to anything, but it's a nice invention. I'll make sure to bookmark it.
  22. At age 5 I stole a golden yoyo from Wal-mart, hid it under my shirt and ran for my life. (no witty quoting please) I was dumb though, I put it under my bed and needless to say my parents asked me how I had $20 to buy it, forgot to remove the price tag. Shoplifting at a later age though is conscious and needless to say, pointless. Of course it's tempting but I always thought the risk-reward ratio sucks especially if you steal something like bubble gum (I'm not sure what you were stealing). In most US states, should the value of the stolen good be under $300, it is considered a misdemeanor petty theft, and first time offenders rarely get punished with anything else than compensating the stolen goods and getting a criminal record, in the state of Nevada possibly a few hours of community service. If you stole something more valuable than that, it will be treated as a felony/grand theft which is more serious and you should stop posting here and consider hiring a lawyer. Try this.
  23. ..Didn't you just type a post? I'm not sure if you're looking for a typing speed test? Or if you don't, if you're lazy, try one of those programs that convert speech to letters, though it's often unreliable and the software misrecognises words. This program is probably the best known: http://talktoyourcomputer.com/products_dnspro90.html, however on some forums people would complain a lot about inaccuracies in the program. For example if you farted (don't ask), it would type "France". I wouldn't count on it.
